I couldn't find any of my knives for a period of about a month, so decided to use a swiss army knife instead. Was using the spear blade to sort of lever a bit, forgot that it's on a hinge, sliced the tip off my middle finger as is collapsed down again. Dressed it, went back to doing what I was doing, cut myself again making the exact same mistake 15 minutes later. I have scarred thumbs and fingers, including one of my left thumb where I was drilling and pressing hard, drill burst out the other side and into my thumb. Luckily the bone stopped it.

The worst hobby knife cut I ever has was on my thumb just under the nail. No damn way to get a bandaid on that.

When I was cutting the piece I was cutting I distinctly remember thinking "this is stupid; I'm going to slice my thumb." yep. Brand new x-acto blade.

Generally around the hand, though I did jab myself in the stomach when I was working on a particularly large peice of my Heirophant. I can't even remember how. I just remember trying to grind down a mold line with the knife, then I'd jabbed myself in the stomach.

My other makes me glad I wear baggy junk pants when I model. Dropped a new exacto knife (you know the ones that cut small holes in the fabric of reality they are so sharp?) and if it was not for baggy pants I would have a much higher voice right now. All I got instead is a lil nifty scar that I use as a pickup line when I get desperate.

The only "serious" injury from a hobby knife that i have experienced was at work. I was on a call with a customer and reached into my backpack and found my knife blade first. It slicked my finger open and started bleeding a lot. I finished my call and went to the bathroom to bind up my finger.

That was a fairly good time at that job. My boss was an Eldar player and she knew i was prepping an army for the Seattle GT. Probably built and painted about half my army at work.

So I saw this thread, and it popped out for me, I'll explain in a moment.

So first off, like most of us, I've had my fair share of gashed fingers that I've had to bandage, superglue shut, or tape to get them to stop bleeding, but that does not compare to the most shocking poke that I've had.

I paint, build, and customize in the living room, sitting on the couch. I usually have a clip board that I put small stuff on whilst I am building. One evening I was building and laid my Xacto blade on the board, no problem done this a million time right? Well I leaned forward to grab something, it rolled down into my lap didn't even notice. Went to grab something else and I was like "Woah! WTF is piercing me...THERE..." I look down and the blade is in my lap and the way I had leaned forward had pushed it into my pants and in a not so comfortable place. No major damage was done as I moved upon feeling the prick, but yeah it was pretty scary.

I've managed to cut my fingers numerous times usually my index finger or thumb on the left heand.

My worst injury I was working on a plastic helicopter model trying to cut off the tail for some reason. The plastic was being stubborn so I holdingthe knife in a overhand stabbing type grip. The tail finally gave way and the knife went straight down into my leg just above my knee cap. It burried itself all the way up to the handle and went deep enough that it stuck in the bone.

I had to remove it with a pair of pliers and tiny piece of the tip broke off and is still embedded in there 20 years later. Bled like crazy enough that blood was running down my leg and was pooling in my sock on the way to the ER. It hurt to walk for about a month as I'd managed to stab through a tendon, but thankfully it'd gone in almost vertically with the direction of my leg so it didn't sever anything.

Second worse injury was done at work where I was choppinga salad and I managed to take off part of the tip of my left index finger my finger nail managed to catch and deflect the knife otherwise it would have taken the whole tip off. Instead it was a nice concave scoop out of the side. Bled like crazy and they couldn't give me stitches because there wasn't enough skin to stretch around the wound, they would have had to remove the nail in order to stitch it. Took about 3 months for the skin to grow back and I couldn't touch anything for weeks as it was immensely painful.

The worst part was one of the brain dead employees I worked with gave the salad to the customer complete with blood sprayed lettuce and a hunk of skin. eww.

And here I thought that I was the only one whose done that. I feel this emote is appropriate here. I've only been about six months in the hobby, but I've actually never gotten myself with a modelling knife. Of course, now that I've said this I'll slice myself but good next time I set down to work with a model

Never forget the story I heard from a customer back in the day. Not sure of the truthiness of the story, but it was something along the lines of leaving their xacto knife in the center console of their car, forgetting it was there, and leaning over said console. Resulting in a chest wound that actually put them in the hospital. Worst Hobby Injury I've ever heard of. Personally, I cut my fingers and thumbs regularly, and tend to just CA glue them shut and get back to work.

How do you injure yourself in the back with a hobby knife? Did you just put that option there for the sake of covering every part of the body?

I don't use hobby knives, I use a pocket knife. My hands are more familiar with it than to a scalpel-like hobby knife blade.

I've been biulding models for almost three decades.

There's not a single part of my anatomy that hasn't been hit by sharp plastic shrapnel or knives.

One of my favourite ones (though it wasn't at the time ) was a classic case of lackofcaffieneitis.

I was cutting a metal model with a scalpel (yeah..i know.. ) and the blade snapped. It flew up past my face, nicking my left cheek, then bounced off the ceiling and tagged me in the small of my back, as i ducked. That place where you can't really reach on your own.

I was working stripped to the waist, in 110 + F weather, and explaining to the next door neighbour why i was dripping blood on his welcome mat wasn't exactly a treat. He thought i'd been mugged at first.

In my defense, i was about 15 at the time, and not the wisest of folk

I know someone who's done it. (Epilepsy was involved.) I don't think he is a dakkanaut, but I figured I'd throw it in there for completeness sake. Some of these injuries are pretty out there though, and I've injured myself a number of times in some pretty bizarre ways, so I kind of figured "you never know." Always try to be complete.

I could see it happening, if rarely. Say the knife falls on the ground or something, and you somehow fall over on top of it. Bam, instant back injury.

My worst one was when I was scraping off some excess sprue on a model, and somehow (you tell me how ) I managed to, while sliding the knife towards my chest and holding the handle in my right hand, jam the knife into my right-hand pinky. I honestly have no fething clue how I managed it. I wound up in ER and had to get it stitched up. I still have a scar there to remind me.

Although I've gotten really lucky before. I've had more than one occasion where I dropped the knife between my legs and instinctively slammed my thighs shut to avoid dropping it on the floor. The knife was actually parallel to my legs, and so I avoided injury.

I have a scar running across my chest (think Sagat from Street Fighter II, minus the badass) because I fell down some stairs while carrying a plate of food, and landed awkwardly on a steak knife.

So I suppose someone could slip, drop an armful of their supplies, fall on their back and land on the hobby knife.

Wife: "What?"

Me: "Uh ... can you get me a band-aid" (just a minor flesh wound)

Wife: "Why?"

Me: "Uh ... stabbed myself in the neck ... slightly"

Mostly fingers. Worst one I was 9 or 10 though. Got a new Swiss army knife for Christmas and like an idiot I was cutting toward my self. It got stuck so I jerked and managed to slit my own wrist. Just missed the main vain my a 1/16 of an inch. I remember the knife was so sharp I didn't even feel it. Was kind gross too. Your skin is so tight around the wrist that when you cut it it kinda opens up. Didn't even start bleeding for 10 or 15 sec. I remember thinking that was odd. Then it started gushing everywhere. After that I remeber trying to put bandages on it but they wouldn't stick because of all the blood. I kept telling my brother. "shush don't tell mom". Over and over. Lol wow I was dumm. They ended up having to staple it shut.

Ok so we have a back story.... I am curious about the two "posterior" tales.

I have some SERIOUS messed up nerve endings on the ring finger on my left hand all because I noticed after the glue set I had my doomsday arks flayers upside down.... nobody else would have noticed, but I would so I pried the damn thing apart and frustration got the better of me and i became careless and jabbed my finger VERY hard. I should have gotten stitches, instead I put liquid bandaid on it... took it about 2 weeks to stop bleeding. Its healed over now, some serious scaring, but still hurts if i apply pressure to it.

My first incident wasnt too bad, was building a dreadnought and was cutting towards my thumb with a sprue in the way of my thumb and though "the knife will cut free the dreadnought and the sprue will stop it!" (it was 2:00 am... wasnt thinking very clear... probably had brain damage from all the gluing on other models before too ) and sliced my thumb open. wasnt even half as bad as my first incident though.

I was cutting SM scout sprue (damn I hate those sprues, so much awkward connections as well as so much mold lines)

anyway, cutting a really thick piece, when my hand slipped and I plunged the xacto all the way into the side of my left middle finger. hurt like a mother and bled a ton.

Cutters are so much easier to use for sprue-cutting, at the moment my tools are locked in my girlfriend's room and she happens to be away so I had to use a hobby knife for the first time for sprue work and *oh my LORD* is it a lot of work compared to a simple *clip* 'oh look, it's done!' Just file it afterward if you're worried about mould lines.

Ive never had good cutters, and never felt like throwing away money for them, but I probably should. dulls my xacto too much and then its harder to cut for conversions etc
