honestly, I think people realised that if the sequels were bad,m why bother. you know there's still fans out there, online, discussing things about the movies.

Yeah what ruined it for me was Neo doing his thing in the real world, and turning into a monk.

Once you have a character who is essentially "invulernable" in your movie; you have a serious problem. Your hero can only be threatened by bad things happening to the people he cares about. Then, watching how that impacts the "invulnerable" hero.

Matrix 2 and 3 were less interesting to me because, we know Neo is unstoppable in the Matrix, since anytime we see him acting the the Matrix; there is 0 tension.

I personally liked the Merovingian as a foil. I have no idea how sentient AI's outside of the Matrixes programming could come about, but he was cool. I think I would have liked him better if he was another human, who realized how to manipulate the matrix, and simply used it to his advantage in a less "heroic" way.

That would have given us a look into the "not-Neo" version of the chosen one. Neo would have been given more depth, because he choose to use his powers to fight the status quo, instead of simply prospering within it. Instead, we get rogue AIs, which is less compelling.

So, I think the world of The Matrix still has a lot of stories to tell.

I like all of them, but not equally. I felt like they were the new Star Wars as a modern, epic sci-fi trilogy. I just think people are more cynical these days. Back in the Star Wars days if you wanted to see Star Wars again you had to go to the theatre again...and again. These repeat viewers became a community of super-fans.
Nowadays, even if people really like something they'll just download it and talk about it on the internet. However, even when something is great like 20-40% of the comments on the interent will be negative anyway because......it's the internet.
Star Wars like super fandom will never be acheived again (not even with Star Wars as the new trilogy shows), I think it's a relic from it's time.

Hell yes. That whole scene nearly makes you forget about the crap that came before it. I mean, they were swimming in fething bullet casings!

Grakmar wrote:The first Matrix movie was incredible from the moment it started until the ending credits rolled. The second and third films were pretty disappointing. But, they did do a great job of filling in the gaps left in the first film.

Specifically, that moment in Reloaded when Neo uses his powers in the "real" world and you suddenly realize he's still in the Matrix. I remember seeing that and being blown away. All the pieces suddenly fall into place.

And, it raises all sorts of other interesting questions: Are the other members of the resistance people or computer programs? Is the Matrix effectively multi-player, or does each individual have his own Matrix and is only interacting with programs? Is Neo the last remaining human, or are there others? Is Neo, himself, actually human, or is he just a computer program? Is Smith actually a rogue program, or is he just another part of the illusion the machines have built?

??? I don't remember ever learning that Zion was a second Matrix, am I missing something?

I know it was a common fan theory up until we all gave up caring.

My prefered ending would have a been a 10 minute sequence of Neo waking up in different worlds, realizing quickly each was an illusion until he found himself back in his cubicle as Mr Anderson oppressed office drone.

And shrugging and realzing at some point you have to stop looking for truth and accept the world you have.

And then you wonder why no one armored the cockpits...

Or why the machines don't have guns...

And then you cry

@Kyoto That would effectively be the "It was all a dream" ending which I really would not have liked.

I prefer my ending were Neo becomes part machine and ushers in a new species of super-machine-men which would end the war because they are one people now.

Then, it got stupid.

Oh, well.

Actually, at the end of the second film, IMO it couldn't be clearer that they were still in the Matrix. That explains Neo taking out the robots, much of the mumbo-jumbo from the Architect about the illusion of free will, the stuff about multiple Zions, etc.

But then in the third film, nope, Neo is a computer Jesus with real-world superpowers. For no explainable reason. Umm.

Dark City was a far superior film. It broke all those rules before the matrix. The Matrix wasn't bad, but the sequels were woeful.

1st was damn fine movie.
2nd had it's moments and was ok
3rd had the badass huge fight in zion which was awesome. That fight alone made that movie alright to me.

I haven't looked into it as much as others and that might be why I still like it.

Yes I think they were similar in that they did something fresh, or at least a fresh spin on an idea.
