I don't how many real trolls there are on Dakka, but some posts are so inane that the poster might as well be trolling.

See above EDIT, I really like the idea of Stamping things like an Inquisitor (Heresy!).

This really gets at it. Sincerity doesn't mean much when the opinion being expressed is obviously inflammatory.

If someone starts dropping the n-bomb everywhere, it doesn't really matter if he's doing it for the lulz.

Yeah, unfortunately I don't think DBs are ever going to go away. Still if we want to start calling these idiots shat goblins (this is never gonna get old in my head), I'm all for it.

EDIT: Should we maybe create a list of known /sg/ or perhaps devise some way to differentiate a /sg/ from a devout white knight or similar?

TY for that, I never knew GW put out a product called 'Failcrap', FlawCast (TM). I would like to see them fix it as it's got potential to be a good medium. It's just a shame what GW is doing. (And personally I can't stand to line Mr Kirbys 401k anymore)

Trolling is an art form. And like all art forms it suffers from imitators.

I can't find it atm but sonewhere there is a site that describes all the different kinds of trolls. Its worth checking out if. You have some time to kill.

Re trolling there was a semi interesting documentary on BBC3 last night about trolling by Richard Bacon. Pretty grim thins people get up to (trolling RIP pages on Facebook ). From that I would suggest people being knobs here really isn't trolling just them being attention seeking knob jockeys as some of the things trolls do really are a bit sick. They can to the conclusion trolls are normally people that have been picked in RL and want revenge on society.

It started of with Mr Bacon trying to track down so wacko that was setting up pages in his name saying some pretty sick things about his family. He did go through with it in the end as a Shrink pointed out that the troll had moved beyond taking the piss and now seemed to be an obsesive with violent inclinations. He bottled it and passed it on to the Rozzers, probably rightly.

Still it says something that the police are getting involved with these things, I saw that some knob that posted racist comment about Fran Muamba (a footballer who collapsed at the weekend) was up before the beak in about 24 hours. Now that's Modquisition!

Yeah saw that on the BBC News website, maybe there will be some recourse for those who post on the Internet. You still have to complain to the police. I missed that Richard Bacon thing, I read about it in the Times on Friday of last week.

People often call me a troll when they lack the wit to see my arguments with clarity. That's to be expected though, I have a hyper-logical mind, many normal people have difficulty following my thought processes, especially abstract ones.
Not really any different from any other pejorative though, really. Just new.

In my stint on these forums I've noticed two terms that are abused.

Troll and Internet Tough Guy

Troll is generally understood as someone trying to get a strong negative reaction out of you.
More often than not on these boards troll means someone who doesn't agree with you.

Internet Tough Guy is generally understood as someone claiming themselves to be excessively tough or hardcore. For example, saying "I know people where you live, I could have you killed if I wanted to" could constitute an ITG.
Internet Tough Guy on these boards seems to be used in the sense that if you speak of your achievement, no matter how insignificant, that makes you an ITG.

You should change the thread name to reflect the Shat Goblin/Shat Alarm.

You are no Troll, you're a mere Shat Goblin.

If somebody wants to fluently write the definition, Oxford Dictionary standard if you're feeling brave, I'd be much obliged.

I agree with Necroshea's appraisal of the term troll here on Dakka.

Contrary to Amaya and dogma above, there is a important distinction between a troll "and someone who might as well be one." We even have two terms for it: trolling and flamebaiting. A person who flamebaits can simultaneously sincerely believe in her/his points and be motivated to post for the sake of shocking other users.

Accusing someone of being a troll is sort of like accusing someone of being an idiot. You might mean that they are an idiot as evinced by their idiotic argument but it's still a personal attack rather than a response to their argument. If you accuse someone of flamebaiting, that's much more problematic for them -- but it's also harder for you to substantiate, minus them using transparently insulting language ("all conservatives hate puppies" type statements).

So, in a word, calling somebody a troll is much easier. As mwnciboo wrote, people seem to think it's a "win button" -- except they very rarely call someone a troll and then stop arguing with them. If they really thought the person was a troll, in the "technical" sense, they wouldn't continue on. So, like I said, it often amounts to a personal attack and just as a reminder, it's against our rules.
