Earlier this month, parliamentary speaker Marzuki Alie said he would draft rules banning female politicians and staff from wearing short skirts because they were distracting and that ''there have been a lot of rape cases and other immoral acts recently and this is because women aren't wearing appropriate clothes''.

''You know what men are like,'' he said. ''Provocative clothing will make them do things.''

I get so angry when I read stuff like this.

There are two ways to interpret it - one is that the speaker genuinely believes men are unable to control themselves, which is ludicrous.

The other is worse - he sees a great way of passing the buck for those men who fail to control themselves.

I wonder, is there any reliable evidence that there are fewer rapes in conservative Muslim countries? Because most of the anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that there are the same number of rapes, but women are the ones who get stigmatised for being raped rather than men getting blamed for raping.

I hate this passing the buck that women are more responsible for what they wear than men are for what they do.

Indeed. That's why I really hate the Islamist party here. They're all crazy like that.

Then again, I think everyone in the country hates them anyway.

I agree. It is as insulting to men(saing we can control ourselves) as it is demeaning to women.

Yeppers, I agree with you there. I shure know whenever I see a woman in a mini-skirt my first thought is going to Rona and picking up some duct tape, rope and a mask for a 'Date kit'.

I'd say at least 50% of women between 18-24 down here wear short shorts that barely cover their assets. By that logic they are in constant danger of being randomly raped by good ole boys.

Sadly this nonsense has steadily increased in Malaysia too, especially in the rural, conservative north and east. However, the current government, incompetent and corrupt as it is, is very much invested in keeping our lucrative tourism industry afloat, and as such the cities are fairly cosmopolitan, especially if you're an expat. Things like miniskirts, holding hands, public displays of affection, are only an issue if it's a Muslim perpetrator, then the religious police might get involved. Someone would have to rat you out first though...

And that's why I hate our government. Not the only reason, but a pretty big one.
