Another suggestion may be to do a temporary buying freeze. Instead of spending the money on new minis, spend some to have a commission painter do some work for you.
I love painting my own stuff. But sometimes I do send them off to a pro. I needed a kill team painted for Adepticon, plus I wanted my copy of SDE painted for it as well. Sent the Kill team off to my painter, and was able to finish (almost) my project.

Everyone knows if you paint your last miniature, you die.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |

I too have alot of unpainted minis, most of them for Warmachine and Fantasy, which are niche-nonexistent scenes here in KL. I just sorta stare at them and scratch my face. Then I get hungry and wander off to grab some cookies. By the time I'm done I realize I need to check emails. And so it goes. It's sort of depressing..perhaps I need to hire a dude who just sits in my room and yells at me until I paint them.

I stop buying minis when I have anything still on sprue, unbuilt, or even if they havent been given a base coat. After I have everything in my cases at least built and primed then I can feel okay about adding another box of something. Im slow with the fine detail painting so I just chip away at one or two models every now and then. Im slowly making progress.

You'll know when it's time to stop.
We all reach a point where there's a limit, either in terms of spending, or in terms of space to store unpainted stuff.
If you have a significant other, expect her to eventually chime in.
Dont' worry as much about selling stuff. Sure, you take a loss on it, but you'd probably never get to it anyway. Take the money and run. And there will always be new armies/units/games to buy.

Definitely stop before space becomes an issue.
I stopped buying more stuff until I had some more armies painted and stored.
I found a load of stuff for 1/2 price and thought what's the harm? Well their all sitting on the top of an already full shelf unit and have fallen of twice now. I could literally be killed by minis at any moment!

Almost done with eldar! Then on to demons and finally can buy more models when new stuff comes out

i only buy stuff that I either want to field in one of my three armys or want to paint. I do have a massive amount of unpainted models. they are all used in games though so it is not in my books models or money going to waste. I do have a few models queing up to be painted for display though. Shiny new thing syndrome does exist a little there. ButI will noy get more until I have afew of em painted.
I will not start another army untill the ones I have are at least painted to a three colour standard.

I hit "the wall". the point where there isn't anything I don't have that I need. and like most others, too many to paint and not really anything to need.
oh yea and paying for a mortgage, car, motorcycle, wife and 2 kids puts a slight damper on the funds when you're single income. (and don't make 6 digits)
no regrets. I stripped most of my older models down to repaint. (improved skill with time, time to update everything) so no need to buy anything new, just repaint what I have

On another forum, people join a "Painting Pledge" where they can only purchase a miniature for every two they paint. This helps them catch up while still allowing purchases at a slower rate.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

i'm sure there might be. her logic seemed really simple. she says its because she hates bugs in real life, so on the table top its her way of conquering her fear.

Its all about self control over here. I try to have a ratio of 80% painted to unpainted before I'm aloud to go enjoy some retail therapy.
My DE army is almost there (hovering at around 72%). 1 ravager, 1 raider, 1 venom, 10 wyches, 5 kabalites) painted while only the Archon, a venom, and 5 kabalites are unpainted.
I refuse to let myself end up with a massive force of unpainted minis. At that point it becomes so demoralizing you never paint anything because all you see is "oh god look how much I have to paint!"

absolutely. although that particular moment she was REALLY into the new codex (just got it for her) and she was comparing the two side by side to see how the rules changed.
