I play CSM (Mech Iron Warriors) and Necrons.
i prefer shooty armies and IW appealed to me as yo get the toughness of marines alogn with the fluff of bih feth-off guns!
Playing a "baddie" army appealed to me as well.
Apart from a brief dabble with a Crimson fists army i have avoided playing as Marines, pretty much on principle.

I'm wondering if this thread was inspired by mine, and if so, I must say you worded yourself much better than I did!
I think the problem with my thread is that people took the comparison aspect too literally.
I play 40k rather than WHFB simply because I know more people who play 40k. Still being a newb, I'm still finding it a lot to digest, but perhaps in time I will broaden my gaming horizons, perhaps even taking some of my 40k friends with me.
I play CD and DE, and I absolutely feel there is much to be leanred from people on the basis of the faction they choose.
- I know people who play Eldar who have a similar resistance to overindulgence, and a sharp eye for consuming knowledge, constantly bettering themselves.
- I know people who play Orks who have a very keen taste for all things generally big, bulky, and a general fondness for things with a lot of "beef".
- I know people who play SM who are keen competitors, keep themselves at optimum health, who want to be the best at what they do.
I'm not saying we should judge people by the races they play, but just generally the races some people choose seem to be very in keeping with their characters and / or general preferences, whether psychological or physical.
Being as I play CD and DE... Well.. as for Slaanesh, (which is the CD god I most like), yes, sexuality is a big part of my life, as is a kind of depraved fondness (in fantasy!) for a kind of corruption and over-indulgence.
As for DE, this is more aesthetics. I just love that dark, badass sleekness! Also the fact that DE are essentially Eldar who gave in to desire during The Fall, and became what they currently are.

I only play Ultramarines because I am a military man myself, and they strike me as easily the most professional. I am also argumentative and I like the idea of a nerd telling me that only kids play them.
It may seem silly, but the idea of playing Chaos or SW or something seems foolish to me, I think the idiots (beserker types) would be the first to get killed in an actual war! (Alpha Legion aside of course, I think would be the kings of Chaos)
Anyway yeah, I do think some of your RL persona gets transfered to your choice of army. I mean, it probably belongs in the fluff section, but the UM speak to me!
Amazingly professional, spend all of their time discussing weapons and tactics and training, how the hell would they lose in a fight against some drunk blokes with beards who spend all day singing and getting pissed?
Soft spot for the almost as pro Imperial Fists/Raven Guard so I painted some, I also like the Guard for their grit, and the Tyranids for the aesthetics, but I only play Gullimans finest.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels. |

The problem I have with the Ultramarines and their fluff as being the best is their strict adherence to the Codex Astartes. I can't help but think that rigidly following the tactical doctrine of a book would make them extremely predictable in battle and therefore actually easier to defeat than Space Marine chapters who do not follow it due to these chapters being harder to predict.
All it would take is Abaddon getting his hands on it and the Ultramarines would be defeated in every battle as he'd know exactly what they would do in any given situation.

Have you read ATSKNF?
Aside from it being awesome, it reinforces my opinion of the UM. Gulliman spends all his time studying military tactics and doctrine and training with all sorts of other weapons. He also included the point in the Codex, that if your enemy knows your tactics, you should fight in the exact opposite way they expect. The codex has been stated to be simply a collection of military skills, its a guideline, but not a rigid set of rules, if your enemy expects you to harry his flanks, then you stick every single man and dred in a drop pod and smash into his centre ready for fisticuffs.
Ergo, If he was to fight against someone who has had access to the codex, no doubt he would do just that.
The main reason I think this way is because I have worked and trained with soldiers from all over the world on numerous occasions. France, Spain, Germany, America, Turkey, Holland, the list is endless. When you take part in a NATO/UN operation or exercise, everyone is doing the same gak and singing off the same song sheet because in real life military doctrine IS written down and commonly available just like the codex astartes, namely, its all easily available and practiced by anyone who has had professional training. And OBUA package (Operations in built up areas) Is 90% identical no matter who you do it with. The Navy SEALS enter an occupied building pretty much the same way as the SAS (use an unconventional entry point or make one with a mousehole charge, use stacks of aggression, gak loads of smoke when covering open ground, be as fast and aggressive as fitness allows, grenade goes in, double up and tap when you enter a room and take a side each, fire into likely cover etc etc) and In real war, people generally all do the same gak.
We did some fire and manoeuvre with the French the Spanish and the Americans when we were in Cadiz, it was meant to be a show and tell for your allies, see if we did things differently. Milotary being the way it is though (And Royal Marines having the repuation they do!) We kinda treated it like a contest. We knew it was happening, so our company had a quick brief on ship and the sergeants nominated the fittest and best guys for the job (you needed an 8 man fire team) they spent 5 days drilling for it on ship, and when we came to demo, all of the nations did it pretty much the same, but our team did it fastest, and there wasn't a single milisecond with a gap in fire (extremely hard to do with rapid reloads) despite it being over a 300 meter range, and the teams splitting down to 4s/2s/ then individual assault. It was far and away the best demo of the day, was roundly applauded by everyone there, and the American Marine Captain came over and happily admitted it was one of the most impressive things he had ever watched.
You might think im just blowing smoke up their arses, but that's a true account, and i tell it to illustrate my point. Our lads prepped for that exact event 5 days in advance and it showed. We also picked the best guys from the company as recommended by their seniors.
The point im making is this.
In war they say a plan never survives the first gunshot. And barring unusually bad luck, when professionals fight professionals ( SM vs SM? ) Its the guys who train the hardest, train the longest, and work the hardest who win. Automatically Appended Next Post: As a side note, I cant believe how much I put into that last post.. you would almost think this gak is real.
I have now entered the nerd stratosphere...

I play sob and Adeptus Aribites (Tourment legal) and starting up CJ Harlies.
I refuse to play marines no matter what as I'm so sick of seeing Marines on practically EVERY table.
I was raised to be unique and I love standing out in a crowd. I also love the attention of being different.
So my choices fit me great!

Favourite 40k Army-Sisters of Battle.
Favourite Warhammer Army- Tomb Kings.
I either love underdogs or have severe masochistic tendencies! To be honest I do love the underdog, the unappreciated, the niche product. That probably feeds into my army selection. As soon as an army becomes 'not cool' or lower tier in some way I feel drawn to it.
Three legged puppy syndrome.

Dark Angels- Monks, secretive, brooding
Menoth- Holy Crusaders doing work for God, FIRE!!!!,
Dwarfs- Value on honor and respect as well as knowing personal history.
Dark Angels and Dwarfs: Something of a dark past, keeping old grudges and brooding over them, but never tell anyone, yea that sounds like me. Though I've forgiven all of them its not like I will forget them anytime soon. At the same time it comes with a respect for history, heraldry, and personal pedigree as a challenge to personal accomplishment that I hope one day my kids will outdo me.
Dark Angels and Menoth: Monks and Crusaders, faithful to a fault. Though I suppose I fit in more with the Choir than I do with the Exemplars, being somewhat of a pacifist and all.

I just choose the armies because of their lore and look.
40k Orks: Well I was raised in Price George, British Colombia. Everyone around those pars are just pure red-necks to the bone. And I guess Orks are pretty red-neckish due to the way they talk.
WHFB Dwarfs: Well, I love my beard, but I wish the Nuns at my school would... I love my self some boose, and If I am lazy and If I was placed on the battlefield I sure as hell would hide in the corner and SLAUGHTER MY ENEMIES AT RANGE.
