What consistancy is your paint when you apply it to your model? I tend to find that the consistancy of milk (or slightly thicker) works best unless I am dry brushing but thats another kettle of fish. It takes more coats but ends up with a smoother easier look to the model.
I'm liking the colour scheme my friend, will look good on the table with or against my BT's

I need to settle on consistency tbh, occasionally its milk thick like you say, other times is like food colouring. Trouble is that I don't get enough painting time though I'm hoping for at least 1 day over the jubilee!
I'm looking for a compressor too, having recently bought an airbrush. I have so many things to paint that base coating by airbrush will save me a huge number of hours at the bench! This relates to your question, as my consistency may change again .depending on how good or bad this this brush is!

basecoating by airbrush? shame on you!!! you should paint the entire bulk with the airbrush!!! shadows, mid tones, highlights, the transition will be seamless with an airbrush (when done correctly!)
i recently bought an airbrush and its really hard to master! so dont expect GD quality just because you got pro gear.
for now, try glazing rather than slapping paint on. it might sound harsh but if you master glazing you can make color transitions that are impossible to make even with an airbrush!
how long have you been painting if i may ask?

I got back in to the hobby January 2011, though I don't get to paint anywhere near as much as I'd like; I really struggle with time!
Oh, and this isn't pro gear, it was only £15, I just got it to help speed me up!

Also what colour primer are you using? This could obviously affect the amount of applications that you have to apply to your models. With Red and White I'm look at getting some Army Painter grey, then you can build up the white with some effective highlighting and the red goes on easier. Obviously with my army choice I have to either go the grey route or buy white and black and dick about with masking tape for ages.... on a seperate note - yay the final installment of my 1k BT's have arrived

I use chaos black spray - I prefer the red tone that I get from this over a white undercoat. If it's any brighter they start to look like BA's.
Using mephiston red, I don't find myself needing to do too many coats, though I do like to do multiple coats of carroburg crimson shade to really gloss it up. I'm still fiddling with the highlights.
Dare I say it... WD has really helped me this month with the White Scars painting guide - it was good to see how a pro would paint an all white marine and that'll help me with my shoulder pads and helmets.
Need to see your BT's dude! I'm hoping to have my entire SoO built this weekend - everything SM related, and a picture posted here at some point soon. Need a better camera than my crappy phone for that shot though! There's a few to see!

have you checked SONS of ORARS wip thread? he has some bad ass marines for the same chapter.
if i where you, i'd pay close attention. although his marines are a bit too dirty imo. so a bit cleaner wont be a bad thing.
quick guide for when you get your airbrush!!
prime your model black,
paint your shoulderpads and helmets with vallejo air light brown
highlight your shoulderpads and helmets with vallejo air white
let it dry very well!!
cover your shoulderpads and helmets with blutack or sillyputty or postertack or equivalent.
repaint the who model with vallejo air black
spray the who model with vallejo game color gory red
spray vallejo model color bloody red over the model with a 45 degree angle and after that focus on points of interest (like legs, kneepads, head etc)
highlight head and area's of interest with a 50:50 mix of bloody red and hot orange
remove the blutack/postertack/sillyputty
wash where appropriate
paint metal details
win

I think i did (I remember being disheartened when I found someone else was doing them, for some reason I thought I'd be the only person in the entire world... fool lol)
I'll dig it out again though, iirc is was a real good plog.
Thanks for the airbrush tips, though I'd rather use my GW paints as I have a huge number of these, + I'd rather not have to fork out more money that I really have to.

vallejo paints are totally worth it though... their pigments are finer and the paint comes in dropper bottles which makes it easier to measure your ratio's.
and you get more paint for less money

Hey Kitch looking pretty good there bud! I know i'm no pro painter but if you want i can PM you with the way i do my blues, reds, faces if you like? it's always good to have repository of different methods to get the same result, so you can just have a crack and see what you like? even think of using coloured primers and adding the shades with the airbrush and then highlight with a brush on your edging, that's how i did my redeemer i just finished, consistent and fairly quick too :-) plus i've been using Vallejo paints and they are really nice to use and a fair bit thinner straight from the bottle, you should look into them and they're cheaper as well!
keep going I would like to see some more troopers, the white helmets really work for them, I do love chapters that aren't often seen and SoO were one i did consider for a bit myself!

Oh wow, thanks man that's a nice feeling that you've already copied it lol when i get some time i'll type you up just the recipes for the colours and things i mainly use, so, Red, blue, green, white, lenses and faces etc... like i said, you may or may not find they're exactly what you like but if you can use any of it that could be handy for you!
I like where you're going with the Sons it's always exciting to see a new force come to fruition and I know that good positive feedback can make all the difference between sticking with it or getting disillusioned! and you're doing a good job, paint may just be a tad thick still but it's not too bad, if you end up buying any other brands of paint you'll notice how thick GW paint is straight up! it can make it hard to get consistence results, I now always us the Army Painter coloured primer as my base colours, seriously amazingly good stuff dude! and thankfully using washes you can get a deeper shade of red if you desire it too, you might want to check it out as well and give it a shot? for your red i'd use Dragon red primer and wash it with the new Carroburg Crimson shade once or twice, it'll really darken the colour and shade your recesses, again i'm happy to show you some e3xamples if you need them
what's next up on the painting bench for them?

I'm determined to finish my terminators, I really like the models and had fun assembling them. Plus they're a small squad so it'll help me to not see a long queue of models waiting to be done!
After that I have choice of devastators, 2 tactical squads, contemptor dread (that I bought at gd last year lol) , 2 drop pods, and an assault captain...
I'm thinking the devastators as by sticking to small squads I can by techniques down and go much faster through the tacticals.
I've returned a couple of faulty products to gw lately too, couldn't decide what I wanted in exchange though, so I asked them to choose either telion and sniper scouts or another tactical squad with the iron hands bionic upgrade pack I'd love the scouts for gaming and painting, the tactical squad for the modelling opportunity! Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, I forgot... I also have 3 land speeders (standard variant) that I've loaded out with HF + MM. I'm converting one of the pilots to hold a recovered company standard; I'm hoping to find one of the casualty models to stick to the base, so it looks like the speeder has blasted on over and grabbed the standard before the enemy got to it.
I have a choice of standards here that I've acquired from various bits sites, though looking at them now I'm wondering if I'd be better modelling one from gs and a brass rod... To be confirmed as either way I need to go and buy the brass rod to mount it.

Ok, so I had a really good painting session tonight, over the course of roughly 3 to 3.5 hours I've made some good progress on my Terminators. Helments have been redone after the previous wash, guns, weapons and purity seals are 1 step closer to being finished, the armour has been edge highlighted (in orange, Mrs Kitch says it looks great as it is though I'm inclined to glaze it with bloodletter - thoughts?) and I've started on some minor freehand, such as electrical arcs on the power sword and the chapter symbol on one shoulder pad. Now I write it, it doesn't seem like a drop in the ocean, though I feel happy so that's gotta count for something. I'd do more but its late and I don't want to lose tomorrow to sleep!
I'll be nicking a decent camera soon (hopefully this week, preferably before the bank holiday's out) so I can get some better pics as these phone camera ones are so crummy...

your metals look kind of weird...
i still think it should some weathering (just a little bit) on the white will look more realistic.
as for an good cheap compressor i recommend the AS-186.
its a cheap piston compressor with a 3ltr tank. comes with a water/oil filter and and has a pressure control valve.
i bought it for 90 euro which is about 65GBP

The metals look weird as the base coat dried too quickly (according to the citadel painting guide) so it became quite textured. It doesnt look like that in rl though.
How do you weather white? It's one.of those bastard colours that's insanely difficult to do anything with lol.
I found a mini.compresoor for £40 on eBay, just waiting for more to come available as they all.went before I had the cash together for it

I start with bone color, then brown or sepia wash, then build up white on the raised parts so that the darker colors are left a little and visible. You can also go over it with a watered down brown wash if it is just a small amount of white, like a line. Then highlight again in a smaller line.
I'm no expert, that's just my style for lighter colors to make them look a little dirty. Heck I'm weird, I prime almost everything white and go from it to the rest of the colors.
Are you using washes? I'd say get some and use if you aren't but also, you can take them far too far. I know I did when I first started with them and ruined quite a few paint jobs.

sounds about right!
you could also just use a sepia wash and then rub a tissue over it to clean the larger surfaces. that means that the "dirt" sticks to the crevices.
which should be about right.
this will also allow you to paint your white area's completely white (so no blacklining or layering white or whatever) , then use the wash, leave it for like 30 secs, then rub it off.
your shoulderpads, helmet and kneepads will have a lovely amount of "dirt" in the crevices and the large, flat area's will be white

The helmets look fine IRL; it's just the flash from my camera is whiting it out. Gonna nick my Dads canon & mini photo studio this week though so hopefully I'll get some better pictures up so you can see for yourself.
Re the shoulder pads; the problem imo is that the terminator pads are very flat, so there's nothing to shade or black line to. All other models that use the tactical marine style pad will be fine as they have the raised lip at the edge of each pad, thouh excusing the crux terminatus there's bugger all to work against.
I might do some battle damage on them... not too sure about that though as I like the crisp and clean look.... something to think about.
Too many parties today so no painting opportunities sadly, though I hope to have them completed tomorrow

Best thing to maybe do is take the photos next to a window, and let natural sunlight onto the models rather than using a camera flash? Granted, that means you've only got a 12 minute window per day when it's winter haha
