Curious. You mind sharing where you read that?

I remember reading it in a painting article. They did it as an act of friendship because the sqauds where often intermixed.
But if i had to guess, Nothing short of armor having to be replaced would get them to change to colors.

There was a Dark Angel successor Chapter which was kitted out by the Dark Angels, inheriting their older marks of power armour (III & IV from memory) that had been replaced by MkVII's - can't remember which one it was. Successor Chapters that have close ties with the Chapter their gene-seed comes from may recieve equipment from them to cement their ties.

It's like our weapons & kit - what happens to weapons & equipment that is replaced with newer stuff? Does it all just vanish mysteriously? Or does it end up circulating around, being used by many different people? The AK47 is a brilliant example of this - they're everywhere because once their previous owner has either sold it or no longer 'needs it', it moves on to another owner and because it's so durable it goes through the hands of multiple people until it falls apart. Power Armour would be no different - I can easily imagine those Founding Chapter's (the former Legions) still have stocks of older power armour marks that are doing absolutely nothing. New Chapter being raised with their gene-seed? Clean out the armouries a little & donate some suits of armour to them.

Maybe but they aren't parent chapters in the sense that they are directly responsible for the new chapter existing (Dark Angels are a little odd in this regard)
A new chapter may or may not be beholden to their primogenitor legion successors but it isn't a general rule that they receive armour or arms from them.
At any rate if they did there is probably some kind of made up ceremony that appeases the 'Machine Spirit' in its new role...

Orblivion wrote:It's not just a matter of respect, Astartes armor has a machine spirit. The reason the Deathwatch leave one pauldron in their chapter's colors is so they don't anger the armor's spirit. So while adding another chapter's icon as a mark of honor is perfectly acceptable, the armor would rebel at being completely repainted in another chapter's colors.

That's certainly within the realm of possibility in a universe where technology is treated more or less like a religion. I recall seeing something on that in an old WD or something, maybe the original Space Hulk game box? There was a suit of Blood Angels Terminator armor that somehow had ended up on almost-permanent loan to the Ultramarines, but the spirit of the armor was both old and cranky. As long as the suit was red all went smooth, but if you painted it blue the wearer would invariably die in the next engagement. It had happened enough times that the Ultramarines just kept the suit red for now.

I would use my own chapters armor as stated before. If he is temporary joining another chapter he is not joining them as in a member of the chapter.

This has been discussed multiple times before.

The conclusion of said arguments was that while most chapters are made out of stock gene-seed that could have come from any chapter of a particular geneseed. For example, an ultramarine successor might have ultramarine, or genesis chapter, or white consuls, but they are still only classified as being of the ultramarine line. However, occasionally a chapter is singled out and their particular geneseed stocks are used exclusively for the new chapter. The reasons for this are numerous, the most obvious one being that a particularly unique trait of that chapter wishes to be passed on. Whether this actually works is unknown, but it can still be said that the chapter the geneseed originated from is the "parent chapter" in the loosest sense of the word.

As for their equipment, that may come from their "parent" chapter, or it may be given by any other chapter in their particular lineage. Or just as likely, it's all brand new, a.k.a. crap.

Perhaps the machine spirit can identify geneseed markers such that armour gifted within a particular geneseed lineage will not response so violently.
