True enough, but the teacher was getting all bent out of shape at the kid and shouting him down every time he tried to put his idea across that it was possible Obama was flawed as well as Rommney. The teacher's actions do put a bit of credence to the statement.

A student tried to bait a teacher of mine when I was in highschool. The teacher told the kid that no good came of discussing politics in the classroom and that he wouldn't have a bar of it. Smart guy, Mr Anguin.

This teacher, on the other hand, is a damn idiot.


Oh, and as far as fraz's daily rightwing posts go, this one was kind of entertaining. Well, not really, but we grade on a curve.

I rarely talk politics at work, unless it is with guys that I know I can have a civilized discussion with even though we disagree on many things.

It's rare taht I find someone who WANTS to talk politics at work taht can keep a civilized conversation with someone who they disagree with...

Same at my school, technically. We're not 'supposed' to have them, but we do. If a teacher see's it out its 1st warning put it away, 2nd warning get taken. Repeat offenders eventually get there phones handed off to the vice-principal.

they're allowed to have phones at ours, just can't have them on during school hours.

They have to leave the phones in their lockers during the day.

I hope you aren't saying teachers are dumb... That would be silly stereotyping based on? Nothing? Don't demean teaching please... there are dumb people in every job.

ONLY a minority of teachers don't make the intellectual cut. You need to have a 3.0 GPA in college in many states to be considered for the job, and have an excessive amount of college credits in a subject.

All this said... I agree he's wrong to say it, and it appears that the teacher has major classroom management issues (Classroom management is based on intelligence... this is a developed skill).

BUT all this said I wouldn't jump on this issue either way... You can hardly judge what actually goes on ALL year by a single short video.

Evidently in stead of doing their job, the teacher had been ranting all year. Why am I betting this is some sort of English class?

I'm just back from a work trip, so I'm too exhausted to pay attention to the video, so I'm posting my opinion without watching and trying to give my ex-teacher opinion on the matter:
Teachers should ALWAYS encourage students to question the world-it's how they learn. If this teacher was threatening the student with jail for questioning Obama, he doesn't deserve to be teaching-this is as someone who left the teaching career for a better job and as an Obama supporter.

Students need to think outside the box in order to truly learn and better themselves-following orders and parroting teachers teaches students nothing. If the kid was offering a real, legitimate question and not just being a jackass, he has every right to pursue the removal of this teacher's license.

The teacher said this was the second time the student disrespected Obama (or something like that, I have a hard time understanding crazy). This clearly wasn't their first time starting an argument, so it would appear that they were really just doing this for S-and-Gs. That it got so much attention and got the teacher suspended was probably not their intention.


If, as a teacher, you made your "fact of the day" about a presidential candidate's past history, it would seem like you are inviting a discourse about politics and the presidential election.

My policy when discussing stuff like this (which I wouldn't at all, except I'm required to by the curriculum for Political Social Health and Economic Education) is to basically provide facts and ask questions. If a kid puts forward a bigoted view, I ask questions to see if they'll consider it in a new light.

I never give my political leanings away and I never speak in favour of one or other party. In my view, that's the professional way to approach it. That teacher was being unprofessional and it seems like they need some time off to get their head straightened out. On the other hand, the kid should be disciplined for being disrespectful.
