To be fair, not only Japanese people could find the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki upsetting. Let's not get into the ethics of it (really, let's not), but the effect it had on real people was genuinely horrible. I think it makes sense to steer clear of things that have killed people in real life, beyond guns and stabbing. Hence why virus bombs aren't anthrax bombs, and that IG tank (Bane Wolf?) doesn't shoot mustard gas, and so forth. It could be an upsetting break from fantasy into real life horrors.

You used to be able to buy rad grenades for Imperial characters... they were... umm... variable... in their effectiveness

Also I'm pretty sure that Baal is massively irradiated after intercontinental nuclear war and that before the Emperor stitched all the warring tribes of earth together there were some nuclear conflicts.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Virus Bombs are simply one of the many weapons the Imperium uses to enact Exterminatus.

Exterminatus is an order and an action. To kill every living thing on the planet.

Step 1 is a massive orbital bombardment to destroy underground bunkers and anything trying to flee the planet(plus a blockade)

Step 2 is normally virus bombs, but these only work on living planets.

After dropping the virus bombs and some time has elapsed, they fire a lance strike or something at the planet. This ignites the flammable gases the Virus creates and the entire planet is wreathed in fire.

Step 3 is optional. This is where they use Clyclonic Torpedos to blast the planet apart.
