You obviously do not live near a Wawa. They are by far the cleanest/most organized convenience store I've ever been to. PA's Sheets, AM/PMs, 7'11s, are all terrible in comparison. Maybe 15% of the Wawas in South Jersey have gas stations. Its not like a Hess or a Sheets... whicha re horrifying and dirty places.

Yeah, I'm not from the region originally, so I'm not talking up Wawa out of loyalty. They just honestly blow most other convenience stores out of the water.

Incidentally, a grad school classmate of mine worked at their corporate offices designing the interiors of their stores.

I don't get how this is meant to be misleading. Romney tried to make noise about the same old Republican talking point that government should be smaller and more efficient. To make his point he used an example about being amazed about technology that for anyone living a normal life is stuff that's been around 3 or 4 years, making him sound like the disconnected, very rich man that he is.

It's not much of story, and it shouldn't be the kind of thing that influences voters, but to pretend the original journalist was being disingenuous in focussing in on the relevant part of the quote, and excluding the same old Republican talking point we've all heard 300 times before is hardly disingenuous.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I think the real issue here is Mitt's reckless use of the word amazing to describe things that really aren’t.

Personally I think a gas-pump sandwich ordering device is "kinda neat" at best.

To be fair, most gas stations in the states don't have touch screen systems, it is unusual in that sense. The place I bought gas most often still uses physical buttons.

Either way, I'm wondering how we're going to bring "competition" (quotes for buzz word) to the federal government. What is it going to compete against? The government of Canada? Is Mitt saying he wants to declare war on Canada?

I, for one, think he is. Americas hat will fall.

I think the real blunder was the declaration that Romney is in favour of everyone losing their jobs, just to be replaced with machines so that the private sector can be mor "competitive".

If the economy (something that the office of the president cannot control or fix anyway) is the most important issue in your election this year, then this remark is just brutal.

Romney had gone on to say: "It's amazing -- people in the private sector learn how to compete. It's time to bring some competition to the federal government and to get it smaller and get it to respond to the customers -- which are you."

Yeah, that's definitely a much more major flop of a statement.

A complete lack of understanding of both economics and government....

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Wait a minute, though, that wouldn't be fair. That makes Romney look out of touch, so we better put the full quote;

"I went into this thing called a phone booth today, you ever been in there? ... You press a little touchtone keypad, you touch this, touch this, and then there's someone on the other end talking to you. It's amazing. It's amazing -- people in the private sector learn how to compete. It's time to bring some competition to the federal government and to get it smaller and get it to respond to the customers -- which are you."

Now that looks much less ridiculous.

Exactly, that's where the 'out of touch' feeling comes from. He is far more amazed than he should be at stuff that's basically passe, if you spend any time buying stuff in regular people stores. To then add the same old empty Republican rhetoric onto the end of it kind of shows why Romney is probably a lot less likely to win than most pundits have predicted - like Kerry in 08 the guy has a fair few advantages in running against an incumbent, but like Kerry in 08 he's a pretty poor campaigner.

Sure, I don't think I've seen one with a touch screen, but that's just an input device, and not really anything to flip out about anymore, when most of our phones have them.

The novel thing is in having a device to do more than

It's almost as if he fails to understand the nature of government, but wants to run the biggest government in the world anyway.

Still, Reagan and the two Bush presidents made all the same noises about government and how it's too big, and they managed to make government so much leaner and more efficient.

Yeah, Romney completely missed the subtext of what he was saying.

Fortunately for him, so will most voters.
