I basically agree with almost everything folks have said thus far. I want to add two models for you to consider. Well, probably more than two by the time I'm done, but these two are extremely important if you like using Knights.

Duke Runewood and the Piper of Ord. Both of them give major buffs to Cygnar melee units. The most important being Pathfinder. Take a look at their entries on BattleCollege and you'll see what I mean.
Runewood turns a 6 point min Sword Knights w/UA into a highly mobile unit that punches well above their weight. Giving them extra movement and a +2 to charge attack rolls. He's also a pretty dangerous combat solo. Not against jacks or casters, but against other solos and multi wound infantry. He can give any of his buffs except the extra move to any friendly faction unit.
The Piper is just cool. Giving your unit access to a ton of different special effects including Tough, Terror and +1DEF. And which ever song you play also effects him. Nice.

For warjacks it's a lot tougher to choose. All our heavies are dangerous but somewhat expensive. When I build a list I'll always start with a Stormclad, unless I'm using Stryker. Ol' Rowdy and Stryker are a killer combo. To be honest sometimes I'll even choose Rowdy first regardless of caster, but only when I know I don't have a Warjack Bond or it's a particularly squishy caster. So Nemo2 or either Caine. After that you can't go wrong. And never forget to consider jack marshalling using Sword Knights for slow melee jacks or ATGM for shooters. The Ironclad is nice but really only when you use him to Tremor other people's targets. Mainly because if he loses that Hammer he really doesn't have a back up weapon with good P&S. So while cheap he won't often make into my non-mangled metal lists.
Light jacks are much more situational. The Charger from the starter set is fine, but a focus hog from hell. To get the full effect of that great gun will cost you 3 focus. I'd rather attach him to the ATGM and use the marshals extra attack to fire two Rune Shots. The other starter jack, the Lancer, is fine if you have a caster with a cheap attack spell. The only lights that's are must haves in my opinion are the Hunter and the Minuteman. Both have excellent firepower and can be very tricky in melee. The Hunter has Parry (no free strikes) and the Minuteman can simply activate his jump jets and go somewhere else.

Infantry is where a lot of folks claim Cygnar is weak so they'll suggest mercs. I disagree and while your local meta may vary I've found properly supported Stormblades to more than most of the opposing jacks and beasts, let alone multi-wound medium based units, can handle. Even the much maligned Trenchers and Long Gunners can be quite effective with a Snipe caster. They're still overpriced, but can do a great deal more damage than people seem to expect.

"As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely just a result of wishful thinking." Pete Haines
For the love of the Emperor people, it's a TURRET. There is no such thing as a turrent!

Several times now I've read that the Charger is "focus hungry" but according to the Cygner forces book he only needs one focus to boost all his attack and damage rolls. So two focus for two boosted shots. Doesn't sound that hungry to me.

Three focus for two fully boosted shots. Powerful Shot only works on one attack at a time.

You are forgetting that you have to spend a point of focus to buy the second shot though.

Therefore: 1 focus to boost the first shot, 1 focus to buy a second shot, 1 focus to boost the second shot takes you to 3 focus.

(I mean there are exceptions- Drudges in Cryx are just awful for example but thats the only bad entry in an entire army book of stuff people complain about being broken lol, there might be a unit similar in Cygnar but damned if I know what it is)

Everyone talks about how bad Trenchers are, but I love them. In Khador it's the Kossite Woodsmen. The truth is that everything has a place and a way to make it "work".

I hopped factions recently, and I've started over with one rule: Play what you love. If I'm going to spend $50 on little pieces of pewter or plastic, I had better love every detail of them. This includes the look of the model, the fluff from the books and the way they play on the table.
