Yup, in one of the many Zombie Apoc threads we've had, we all pretty much decided that bows/crossbows were really one of the best weapons, pretty much tied with a .22 rifle. The pros and cons make these two equal

Really? Bows and crossbows are some of the best weapons for a zombie apocalypse? The only reason why I'd want a bow or a crossbow would be because I couldn't find a gun or ammo.

I'm guessing this decision was made by people who didn't have much experience with archery or guns.

Bows are a lot quieter than guns, which means that you (hopefully) attract less zombies while out and about. The bolts and arrows can also often be re-used, and are reasonably easy to make up replacements.

I'm guessing this decision was made by people who didn't have much experience with archery or guns.

You know the weird thing is, guns are relatively new in the grand scheme of things. How did mankind survive pre friearms?........oh thats right bows Yea man, they are quite as stated, you can retrieve your ammo (ignoring the fact that might be a bad idea) AND best of all, you can make arrows/bolts out of found junk. Hell even a strait stick with a pointy end on it can work. Guns have a major problem with ammo. If you run out, your out, period. And they are loud. Yes, I will be carrying firearms, but still, I wouldnt count out archery thats for sure

I'm not discounting archery or saying that bows wouldn't be useful. What I'm saying is that they're not better than guns in almost all cases. They're quiet, but they're not silent, and you also have to be a lot closer to hit something accurately with a bow so that cuts down on the stealth angle, especially if you have more than one target. You'd most likely be close enough that whatever your target was could hear or at least be able to tell what direction you were shooting from. It's true you wouldn't give your position away from a long way off, but if you're facing a big group it's not going to make a difference and you're not going to be taking long shots unless you like losing arrows.

Also, this reusing your arrows part is a bit over exaggerated. If your arrow hits bone, there's a good chance it's going to be done. If your target falls on the arrow, it's going to be done. If your target runs off with the arrow, it's done. Aluminum arrows bend very easily, and carbon arrows can shatter. Wooden arrows break easily, not to mention the fact that it's very easy to lose arrows in high grass or most other kinds of outdoor environment. It might not be that hard to make an arrow, but it's a lot harder to make a good arrow unless you have the equipment and know what you're doing. If you have an arrow that's bent or cracked just a little bit, you're not going to be able to hit anything reliably with it that isn't very big and very close.

And how is an arrow going to kill a zombie? If you didn't hit it directly in the head I don't think they'd have much effect, and then your arrow is likely going to be damaged from hitting the skull and the zombie possibly falling on it. And the average person who thinks bows are better than guns and just picked up archery after the zombie apocalypse started isn't going to be getting many headshots. If the way to stop your (even slowing) moving target is by shooting it in the head, a bow is not what you want if you can get a gun instead.

Not to mention the fact that guns are a lot easier to use effectively and take less practice than using a bow effectively, especially if you have to be making Legolas-esque headshots. Crossbows also take forever to load and you can't easily carry as many arrows as you can bullets.

For the record the only arrows I have ever used when doing archery were pure metal, so hitting a bone wouldn't be as big a problem for recovery

Your using an awful lot of "Ifs" there. Sure the arrow could break or get stuck under a body and so on and so on. BUT YOU COULD get them back. Can you ever retrieve a bullet from a body, toss it back into your gun and shoot it again? You cant? Well that sucks, you can with an arrow. Also, yea obviously they arnt silent, thats kindda a moot point. Heres some links

So these bows in question are about as loud as a conversation. The guns are like a jet taking off, but louder. So when you say they arnt silent, yes Ill agree, but compared to a firearm, yea they are fething as close as you could get. AND you have a chance to retrieve arrows, AND you can make crude arrows from found objects. Bullets, well they are loud and are not retrievable, best case is you could save the brass and reload them, but even then you need the right materials to do that, and they wont last forever. Like I said, they both have pros and cons, and personally Id rather have firearms to protect myself and family in a Zday scenario, but dont count bows out, not by a long shot. They are FAR more effective then your giving them credit for.

Those things are so fricking heavy that you'll be exhausted after the first dozen zombies. I'd rather go with something one-handed like this:



...and a lightweight shield in the other hand. Good damage output, more protection, less fatigue.

They aren't that heavy dude, I could swing that for a good few hours before getting tired and I'm really not especially strong

Well as a general rule "coonasses" are are pretty immune to the zombie virus. Its all the tobasco sauce in the system. Just like Cajuns are safe, as they have immune systems akin to gators, being a close family relative to said gators.
