I'd only want them back as a Tau ally or as mercs (please GW make a merc book).

No more Imperium unless its AdMech

BTW: A book of mercs that can only be allies needs to be made... soon

I would prefer that GW *not* bring them back, because I still don't think that they're capable of properly catching the spirit of "Sci-fi Dwarfs", especially in the GrimDark era.

That said, I still love the idea of Squats and think that there have been some very well-done player-created iterations of them. They make a great one-off army or squad, and with the allies rules there are now a number of VERY excellent ways to do counts-as Squats units in your army.

Yes, although I think if you look at the Mantic Forge Father range, something like that could be the perfect way to introduce them into 40k. In many ways the Dwarf 'stereotype' - of miners who don't mind enclosed spaces, good at engineering and with high level technology, looking for resources, makes them the most likely of any fantasy trope to have made it to the stars. Think, for example for orks you need 'a wizard did it' (they just 'know', otherwise they would never have made it out of a cave).

Just curious really whether you dislike just the biker/beer swelling side of things, dwarves in space, or just dwarves generally? Or if there was some other event in your life that made you dislike them (perhaps you were 'touched by a dwarf' ) (so sorry, just joking with the last bit! )

I'll just say this. I like my humans to be the way I perceive humans to be. So like we are now. I hate dwarves of all kinds. Warhammer, squats, lord of the rings. All them. I don't think it's a very good concept at all. Bikers and beer swellers are fine by me though

OK, fair enough thanks for answering!

You would have liked the old GW forums then. Before they were closed down, there was a specific rule banning the mention of Squats. It was hilarious.
You would get scurrilous users deliberately mentioning them in a forum argument to get the thread shut down.

Sigh y'all need to read the fluff in the rule book about abhuman.

Squats are back in the fluff and not wiped out. Their now classed as a sub-human but still going strong and part of IoM. page 405 rule book

Why should they ban the topic? you dont have to click on the form if you dont want to read about it. no one is forcing you to read this haha

Why ban anything when you can just avoid reading it?
This gak comes up every one or two weeks and it's just irritating.
Squats are gone - get over it.

Well they already have ratlings so I guess not.

Ratlings and squats are two totally different things. just because they're short does not make them a substitute. That'd be like if someone replaced all the dwarves in fantasy with hobbits and said "hey. they're all short, who cares?"

Ratlings are weak, cowardly, inbred, and scumbags. the only reason the imperium even uses them is because they make decent snipers and cooks. I'm surprised they haven't been exterminatused already. Squats were a proud, intelligent, and powerful society. Ignoring the space biker concept, they had a good idea for their theme, it's just no one cares to remember it. They valued powerful war machines and technology to crush their foes into dust. THAT'S the squats we need back, not the biker hordes everyone thinks of them as (although i'm really tempted to grab a few of the old biker termis and count them as nob bikers for kicks and giggles )

Although I do agree, if they get brought back, it should be as an allied attachment through white dwarf or as a small minidex from forgeworld. as much as i'd love an official army codex, they have been severely weakened over the years, and would rarely have a full army in any one place.

The difference is that Squats remain to date the only complete army that was fully fleshed out and prominant in the fluff that has been removed as a playable option under the rules. One could make a case that Gene Stealer Cults come close, but really they are not in the same category.

I doubt that GW will ever release a new Squat army book, but you never know as they tend to be unpredictable at times. I think it is far more likely that given the new "Allies" option in 40k we will see a series of small allied forces for existing armies published in White Dwarf. It that happens, then there is a strong possibility that Squats will make a come back in that respect.

Hmmm...I'm an established wargames author (two published books and several magazine articles under my belt), can write at least as well as some existing GW staffers, and know the Squat fluff and all four incarnations of the Squat army list (The book of the Astronomican, the WD/40k Compendium list, the 2nd edition "black codex" list, and the Epic 40k list) inside and out. Perhaps I should contact them and offer my services to write such an article for them!

The thing is most squat fans have given up waiting for GW to give them anything. Like little timmy stood outside of Scrooge's house, waiting for half a leg of chicken gristle to be thrown half-heartedly out of the window, we have given up waiting and have taken our dwarf-in-space fate into our own hands..

Bob Olley did a wonderful range of 'scrunts', which are similar in concept to the original RT-era Squats. Mantic have now released the Forge Father range, which is already impressive and with some new models on the way. No doubt they will be about 8000 times cheaper than GW's own dwaves in space, should they ever be released, so they will definitely have to be some exceptional sculpts to bring the dwarf-fans back into the fold.

Call me odd, but I really didn't care too much for those. I have a couple of the exo-armour models to fill in a unit of my own Squat army. But on the whole I was under-wealmed. But to be fair, I was never a fan of Olley's work and much prefer the Perry sculpts in the Squat line. That being said, it is cool he did that range and the newer Space Dwarf figures from other companies are nice.

Another Squat stand-in range to look at is the old Harlequin Miniatures sci-fi range. They made several poses of "Nains" which were very similar in feel to RT Squats. Blacktree Designs has the harlequin molds last I checked. I'm not sure if they still sell those or not.

so they will definitely have to be some exceptional sculpts to bring the dwarf-fans back into the fold.

Even I will admit that even the Perry sculpted Squats are dated. So they certainly would not put those out again. The cheapest option GW would have were they to release a little allied list for Squats would be to simply include a modeling totorial on how to convert WFB Dwarves to 40k Squats. What I would LIKE to see is for them to take the dozen or so unreleased 2nd edition Squat models and release them. They are nice models and stand up to today's sculpts pretty well. Sadly, they would probably release them as finecast, but you take what you can get.

Agreed. If you don't like the topic why bother giving it any attention?

Squats might be fun as a WD unit I think. If done well that is. It is so easy to go wrong with them. Although a good way would also be to include them in the fluff but not make a codex for them. Players who are interested could choose a proper codex for them and start converting (which I have been considering ever since my WHFB dwarves were left to collect dust for years and are still doing that). You could go power armor way for them, lasgun toting guys, converting them using GK rules would be somewhat... weird in my opinnion but anyway you could go with the kind of dwarf army you ever wish. I think that might work. I think I need to go dig em dwarves out of their little box...

IM not here pushing them as an army of even a support unit, i just want them back in the story to be honest. i mean is squats came back the IoM would have a huge technology leap. After all they did make all the armor and stuff we use now for space marines and the engines that power their ships

To many unpainted models to count.

I agree it would be nice to see them, but even those will look a bit dated and again not a patch on the Forge Father miniatures - which again I think people will most likely use as 'Squat allies', rather than going through the trouble of having to try and convert WFB dwarves.
