Cool beans. I was just curious. Thanks for the clarification. I'll see about getting a character made up soon... the randomness was getting a bit daunting but if we're allowed to pick our class that's cool.

Your all soft I tells ya! SOFT! If the game goes well we should do another where we do strict rules and roll for everything! Instead of building a character to suit our inner desires, you have to work with what you have. It isn't fun to do all the time, but it is a good exercise every once in awhile, and usually some pretty epic stories come from those kinds of situations.

I can't help but feel like you are missing out. Perhaps it is just that I've been lucky and had groups that like to do daring things and are proficient at improve. Think of it as an actor being given a role instead writing their own part, which is, surprisingly, what happens the majority of the time. A raucous group with pregen or random characters will always beat a feckless one that pours over every element of their character creation. In the end, it isn't the character creation that makes a game go well, but the players.

Also, playing is a choice, if we were to so a little fun game like that (odds aren't it won't happen anyway), you can always choose not to participate.

And I would, because it wouldn't be fun.

I don't roleplay just so I can roll dice for a character I don't care about and am not invested in.

At least be more specific and more honest and say it wouldn't be fun for you, not that it is not fun in general. Other people aren't so myopic, and indeed do have fun with it. I don't care if you don't like to try a game like that every once in a while, that is fine, different strokes and all that. The problem I have is that you present your feeling as some universal truth, which it is certainly not.

You must find all books, plays, TV, and cinema boring, considering you didn't create any of those characters and you aren't playing them either. The whole point of such an exercise is the challenge of bringing the character to life, much like an actor brings a character to life. It has also never been advocated to be the standard operating procedure, just something that is fun to do on occasion.

I'm kind of with Mel on this one.

I'm looking to create MY character not 'chance's' character. In life I can see where you have to make lemonade... but when you're playing a game sometimes you'd rather not be dealt ingredients you don't want to work with.... or something like that.

EDIT: Or at least not until AFTER the character creation... then the GM and chance can hand you all sorts of stuff.

That's what I was saying about life.... you know... 'when you get handed lemons you make lemonade' (sometimes you got to work with what you're given). But in a game its cool to have control over certain options.

I can sort of see the fun in the randomness. For me though it would have to be like a 'single session' type of thing where its just for a quick 6 hour scenario or something.... like if I'm in a 'pick up and play' type of mood.

Actually, I often DO find most TV, books, plays, and cinema to be boring. Most of it is vapid, poorly written nonsense anyway....

But that aside, your objections are nonsensical and kind of missing the point. This isn't acting. This is far more involved than acting is.

Assuming a role that you did not totally create can be extremely fun in a RPG. I like the idea that my character is not just an avatar for me in the game world but rather his or her own personality and that I have to make decisions in fidelity to that. You can do that with a character that you do completely engineer but starting with randomly generated characteristics makes it easier by front-loading the disassociation.

I highly recommend this approach, not only for its novelty but also as a means to get deeper insight into RPGing. RPGing is not like writing short fiction. You don't know how things will go and you are not in control of the story. Combine this with the realization that your character only exists as part of the story and it becomes clear that a heavy emphasis on control at character creation will not actually harmonize with the experience of playing the character. Simply stated, even if you do choose every detail about your character you still don't know what they will be like in play much less over the course of play.

If anyone wants to summarily state "I know for a fact that something I have never tried is no fun," whatevs.

Well then, I shall see what I can come up with! I haven't got the rulebook, but that's easily remedied. Also, I havent played WFRPG before, but I have played Dark Heresy. I believe that the systems are quite similar... Amirite?

WFRP Second Edition basically looks like an early version of Dark Heresy.

The class system is the main difference. It's actually pretty unique.

That's where people expect you to tell the truth even though they can't double check what you're doing. So, if you roll crap for strength, everyone expects you to admit it but no one is there to call you out if you fudge the numbers.

It's not a system mechanic for WFRP. But it should be, if you're playing Bretonnian Knight!

Yes. But keep in mind, GMs can tell when you're fudging rolls, we aren't stupid.

And, naturally, we can punish you for it.

I'm not the kind of guy that likes to cheat, so that's okay. I think games aren't fun if you don't abide to the rules. The challenge is fun.
