Well, here's me looking stupid (the codex is sitting right in front of me...)
I wonder why they modeled it with six lasguns then?
To make it even more confusing, I think...They probably do this for gaks and giggles.
Honestly, I think a nice compromise would be to take the shots from the rear hatch, but allow some degree of flexibility when it comes to LOS.

There are 6 lasguns because 20 years or so ago when they designed the model they thought it would be a neat idea and the lasguns worked in a different way. Also it should be remembered that the rules are an abstraction anyway of what is actually happening. Its not like the chimera scoots forward a precise distance and then stops to allow the guys to peek over the edge of the hatch to take shots. Its all happening at the same time with firing and movement intertwined. Hence I don't think its too much of a stretch to say that the transported troops can take a bit of time to get a good firing position out of the vehicle in some way. Hell, in my experience people don't tend to have any problem with kneeling/prone models being able to see over walls, etc. representing the taking up of proper firing positions by models that are by their nature inflexible.

There are FW rules regarding a turret autocannon upgrade for the chimera. No too expensive, and most people probably wouldn't mind if you used it. I personally use turret autocannons a good bit. So yeah if you take that upgrade the entire vehicle can fire 4 str 7 AP 4 shots, get 3 plasma guns as your special weapons and you get another 3 str 7 AP 2 shots, 6 if you are within 12". In the fluff they only where lasguns, and it reflected in prior rules. the models inside could fire the lasguns as lasguns or open the hatch and fire one weapon out of it. However since you opened the hatch its now opentopped.
I would be perfectly fine with those rules tbh.

The model was made years ago, of course, but the rules were changed to simplify things a lot. Imagine that in the past four editions, you'd realistically only be able to fire three lasguns from the sides at a time, because you can only fire at a single target. Add two weapons from the top hatch, like a Rhino, and you see why they decided on five weapons being able to shoot.
If (when?) I get around to buying Chimeras for my IG, I'd probably model them to have empty gun ports instead of attached lasguns. It would make more sense that way...

I don't put the lasguns in either. It does look better IMO, as it they do look like fire points.
