Would make some sense if Terra found out Tau are immune to Chaos and essential for the survival of mankind, delegating Space Marines to save the Tau and fight alongside them against Chaos. This is what the rumour said. Otherwise SM and Tau being battlebrothers doesn't make sense. Guess we will see with the next Codex.

BTW in the novel Fire Warrior all attempts to corrupt the "one in a million" who might be susceptible to corruption fail miserably. In the controversial book Xenology, documents hint at the fact that Eldar created ethereals to "create a race immune to Chaos". So if GW develops this background further in that direction, it is not without hints in the past.

The "Ultramarines protect Tau" rumors have been all but proven to be false. Doesn't the book describe instances of Ultramarines and Tau fighting?

I would say it is probably more to do with 90% of kids collecting Marines, and then if the next big 'goodie' codex to come is Tau, that will then encourage them to buy whatever killer new plastic kit comes with that codex. I don't think there is anything more to do with it than that, but that's just my own cynical opinion..

IT's not Tau. They're not immune except in the eyes of blind, nonsense-spewing fanboys.

It's probably the pariah gene, AKA blanks and other such monikers.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I thought the pariah gene was retconned out of existence along with pariahs. If there is such a gene, I highly doubt there would be enough carriers to justify being called a race. 'Rare mutation' is probably more accurate, and hardly sufficient to take on all of Chaos.

Tau are the closest thing there is to such a rumor. "Immune" just isn't quite the right word... Almost, but not quite.

And here we go again:
When a rumor or suggestion emerges involving Tau being superior to the Imperium in any regard whatsoever, SM fanboys fly into a rage... Just check any thread with Tau in it.

You can't spell 'slaughter' without 'laughter'.
By the time they scream... It's too late.

Until Culexus assassins disappear some humans will still have the Pariah gene. The whole purpose of the culexus temple if fielding pariahs with specialized anti-psyker wargear. Since the necrons didn't make pariahs (the new codex doesn't mention them to my knowledge), it makes sense that the emperor would have been their creator.

Sounds like it could be the GK's with the Emperors gift, hence why not one has fallen to Choas ever even though they have the most exposure and experince with it

More reason to believe it was Sturmkrieg.

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.
