Subject: A bit dissappointed in warmahordes (painting/converting wise...)
Oh, were you so interested, here's a link to my building/pasting blog for my Cryx. Very different paint scheme and lots of conversions.I'm currently working much more on my new Khador at the moment so now idea when this one will get updated again.
This is what put me off of warmahordes, the game looked alright, but i could not change it for anything, I got to my warhammer 40k night and while there are alot left un painted, there are awesome conversions. but w/h i saw all models looked the same, even painted. It felt as if i had no choice to make only that model. it seemed static.
But the game system is cool.

They are great. Inspires me to work on my Soviet Winter Guard.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

Theres 'fewer' conversions and differing paint jobs because theres simple fewer WM/H players compared to the many many 40k/fantasy players.
Add into the mix that for years PP's production has been metal minis- most people just dont have the skills or the tools to really get into converting them.
And lets be honest- about 2/3's of what most 40k players call conversions are bitz swaps and kit bashes that even when they look good- don't really require alot of technical skill compared to cutting, fitting and sculpting required with metal minis.

From a personal standpoint, I adhere to the studio scheme for Cygnar because I'm in love with the shades of blue used in the studio scheme and I think gold works really well with them. Then again, I've also seen some really impressive alternate schemes (there's one I saw on the forums on this site that was purple and silver, if I recall correctly) for Cygnar, as well as for other armies.
Regarding the OP, I would imagine that this is either a case of confirmation bias, or (more likely) not looking in the right places.

I do not like the Cygnar studio scheme, probably because of the plethora of Ultramarines in 40k I've gone up against. So I came up with this scheme for my Cygnar.
I dont really find it as a bad thing. I find that the Warmachine setting is like the US Civil war, want to know why all the Khador warjacks look the same? There are only 20 guys in one factory that make all the parts.
unlike 40K where there’s a million forge worlds to sending supplies to a million units to be alerted in a million different ways, manufacturing in Caen is done locally in small workshops by hand with highly trained smiths and engineers who are focused on getting stuff done and the feth out the door.

1. WM/H has a much smaller player base and is a much newer game. I was playing/painting/converting 40K (2nd edition) before PP even existed.
2. personally, I think the WM/H models are much nicer to begin with so don't need as much converting.
3. 40K has kits that are set up to be customized. For example the basic space marine box will make 10 completely unique marines if you so desire.
4. the WM/H fluff has more characters and background on those characters. so People get into them and want to play them. 40K has special characters, but I never really got into them so much.
5. WM/H lists tend to have just one of any unit/model. In 40K you tend to have multiples.
6. PP is a GAME company with models. GW is a model company that also has a game. So WM/H players tend to be more game oriented becasue of the excellent ruleset. 40K players tend to be more hobby oriented and realise the ruleset is full of issues that you just live with.
All in all I have only been at WM/H for a couple of years now, but I came from 40K. I so much prefer the WM/H stuff to paint and play with. I haven't done a ton of conversions, but I have done some. I even use some of my old GW bits to do them. For example I replaced Tartarus' head with a skeleton head because his original one looks dumb to me. A more complicated one was making Scaverous hold his weapon with one hand while TKing with the other. Also, my Cygnar, Cryx and Menoth schemes are not standard.
Anyways, keep looking. There is quite a bit out there, but just not as easy to find as 40K stuff because there simply is not as much. PP forums is a great place to start, though there is alot here if you search some old threads.

I am really enjoying Warmachine at the moment and I am building a Cryx and Khador force. It takes me back to 2nd editon GW when if you wanted different poses you converted them.
I have been coverting the metal winter guard with a saw and green stuff and my paint scheme is very different from the ones on the box. I have found Warmachine has really rejuvenated my love of the wargamming hobby after the last few years of GW's BS in Australia. I am painting again and really enjoying it rather than it feel like a painful task taht is never ending.
In some ways it feels like Warmachine is where GW was back in 2nd edition which was my favourite time with that company and in my opion their Goldern Age. The painting and coverting will get better in time as more people enter the gamming system.

I tend to stick with the official color schemes because I generally really like them. My Cygnar are painted in the official scheme because I love that particular scheme, and same for my Retribution. Only one I'd changed were the Everblight, which I painted bright red with dark brown/black bone plates. I find it odd that the OP picks out Retribution though, as they have the most variation in scheme from any other faction. Most people either don't like the official white and green scheme or find it too difficult to paint so most people tnd to paint them in drab green or grey military style schemes, or bright red or blue schemes.
As for conversions, I really despise the official stance that limits them so much, especially since there are some absolutely dreadful minis that (ruleswise) are too good not to use. They've at least loosened the rules a little bit, originally they said that it had to be the base model and that no amount of greenstuff could turn a Sorscha model into Haley, which is silly. Personally, I couldn't care any less about making my armies tournament official anymore. I would rather use a model I like than an official one that I hate. If people don't want to play against that then it's their loss. But I find that as long as you put forth the effort to fully convert and paint the models and to make it look like what it was meant to represent (or make it so different they can't forget it's supposed to be something else) then most people are perfectly willing to accept counts-as models. It's when you come off as being lazy or cheap that most people object. People will roll their eyes at primed plastic dinosaurs but I've never had anyone complain about any of these:
My Eiryss (reaper mini with eiryss' arms)
my stormfall archers (warhammer wood elf arms/heads and starship troopers mobile infantry bodies)
my epic Krueger (Confrontation Danu warrior)
Tharn Ravagers (confrontation wolfen)

Once I unpack my camera I'll see about posting pictures of my Hunter and Cyclone, both of which have some simple conversions.
As for painting, I've seen three fully painted Cygnar armies in person, plus Dan from Miniwargaming's army.
Cygnar List one is fairly standard. Cygnar List two is yellow-ish with blue details. Mine is basically the standard scheme, except experimenting with Non-Metallic Metals, plus my Hunter is painted in Tan instead of Blue and Gold. Dan, Meanwhile, has a rather nice Blue and Red scheme.
