Honestly if a freshman creative writing student gave me "“Did the water come from the sky, or the rivers, or the ocean?” as dialogue I'd fail him.

Could be worse though, could have been "Why is God angry at Louisiana, is it the gays, abortion or Obamacare?"

The problem with charges of hypocrisy is that without the explicit contradiction of a prior statement (or, more accurately, a prior conviction*) they incredibly difficult to make stick with anyone other than a sympathetic audience. What usually results is a round of name calling rather than any attempt to consider whether or not "hypocrite" is an appropriate descriptor.
