That's lovely. A DC dread would probably kill a Wulfen with some ease but for the sake of a fair contest (At least to start with) lets say both sides have the same options.
In an even contest they are equally matched IMO...

Yar, berserk vampire v berserk werewolf in one on one with similar equipment, 50/50. I have to give it to death company just because death company CAN be upgraded. I.E., if a death-company member were to say, find a power sword or plasma pistol or something of the like that one of his battle-brothers dropped in battle, he might pick it up an use it.

You caught me.
Like most "versus" threads, I actually don't think there is any good answer to this. Their fluff makes both types of characters sound quite powerful, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. It's the age-old fantasy cliché of vampires versus werewolves, just with power armour. Speed versus brute strength, wits versus instinct. Like in so many books and movies, when thrown into a duel against each other, the outcome would thus depend on the story, and with this, the author of whoever writes it. Obviously, both Chapters' friends will be utterly convinced that "their" hero would win.
My vote for the SW is just a product of my pragmatism and personal bias - less a case of "X is better than Y" but rather "X has always been shown winning, regardless of the circumstances".
Keep that bottle ready anyways. I'm sure there's something about the Wolves that I like, I just haven't found it yet. Maybe some day I stumble over some cool story like the one of Captain Tycho's death in the WD. What an amazing read. Really nudged me towards liking the BA.

ADB: I showed the Wolves revealing the key weakness at the heart of the World Eaters; showing Angron that his Legion was broken and worthless compared to the others; that he was the one primarch who couldn't trust his own warriors, and that they didn't care if he lived or died; showing that loyalty to brothers and sons is the heart of success for the Legiones Astartes, to the point even Lorgar makes a big deal out of saying the World Eaters and their primarch were massively outclassed by Russ, and Angron was too stupid to see the lesson Russ had sacrificed time, sweat, and blood, to teach. We're talking about a battle the Wolves won, by isolating the enemy general through pack tactics, and threatening to kill him, without a hope of defending himself. It was a balance, 50/50 - Angron overpowered Russ, and the Wolves were losing ground to the World Eaters; but Russ and his warriors had Angron by the balls, and barely broke a sweat. They won, no question. Lorgar even says: "The Wolves won, meathead."
Dorn won’t help you either. He’s too busy being the Emperor’s groundskeeper, hiding behind the palace walls. The Wolf is too busy cutting off heads as our father’s executioner, while the Lion holds on to his secrets, and has no special fondness for you. Who else will come? Not Ferrus, certainly. Nor Corax either. Even as we speak, I suspect he flees for Deliverance. Sanguinius?’ Curze laughed cruelly. ‘The angel is more cursed than I. The Khan? He does not wish to be found. So who is left? No one, Vulkan. None of them will come. You are simply not that important. You are alone.’ Konrad Curze to Vulkan

Orblivion wrote:Could you refer me to the issue of the White Dwarf containing the story about Captain Tycho Lynata? I'm very interested in reading the particulars of his final battle. UK WD #251, page 86. It's just one page, but it's one of the best 40k short stories I've ever read. This is how you properly end a hero.
I originally got this WD (backordered from a magazine shop online) just because of the Armageddon 3 section, as I've still got this little pet-project going on where I collect any and all bits of SoB fluff, but it's a good issue in more than this regard.
However, this is an oldschool WD, which means lots of cool content that is generally fun to read.
Table of contents includes:
- Index Astartes : The Flesh Tearers (4 pages about the Flesh Tearers Chapter, including combat doctrine and origins, character descriptions, pictures, history, and special rules for fielding them as an army)
- Chapter Approved : Space Marine Command Groups (expanded rules)
- Codex Orks Q&A (even includes an explanation on why Ork blood is red )
- Aftermath of the Third War of Armageddon (fluff for each sector that was fought over in the worldwide campaign)
There's also lots of WHFB stuff such as a new Orc special character or rules for mercenary regiments, and even a cardboard reference sheet with movement and attack rules for the TT.

It is a draw for all intents and purposes.
The Wulfen destorys the DC, but the DC ignores his wounds long enough to kill the Wulfen, before dying himself.

As much as I love the Blood Angels, I agree that this would be a draw. They would just hack and slash at each other until neither is left standing. One might be the most upright afterwards and that can vary, but he would succumb to his wounds pretty soon afterwards.
Both are psychotic killing machines with little to no care or feeling regarding their own safety. They pretty much both want to die and so would ignore the blows dealt to them to ensure they can get their blows in too. In short lots of blood and two barely recognizable bodies left at the end.

This needs to be a diorama!
Ok, hard one, and I'm real glad the op didn't put a tie option in as that would have been too easy. I voted Wulfen for pure nasty primal bastardness. However, I was thinking at the same time that the Wulfen aren't even scouts when the change takes them, so what they have in animal instinct and pure viciousness, they lack in martial ability and skill. The DC has served as a fully fledged SM for a period of time, been on campaign, picked up various techniques along the way and all that and would theoretically be the better combatant. I still voted Wulfen though, as I just can't shake the feeling that the primal rage would win out (over non primal rage )

A SW going Wulfen can happen at any stage of their life, not just in the beginning.

Nah, its still an ever present danger.
95% of all Space Wolves will master the Wulfen once past the Blood Claw stage.. Then another 5% may lose it sometime later.
The beast within is never truly tamed. It can always come up later in life(its unlikely to but its there)

Trope-wise, you're correct, but I do believe that in this case the speed & wits side vs brute strength and instinct is reversed. (Human history since the cave-bear would suggest that wits beats brute strength, but this is 40K we're talking about, not human history.)
As for the actual outcome, I really, really don't know. Flip a coin, I say.

One on one in either Jungle, Forest or a City, I will go for the Wulfen (No contest if its an Ice world).
One on one on a more open space it could go either way.
On a purely open space, the DC Marine has the advantage since he does carry ranged weaponry.

Although I think it depends on how far along the DC marine is. If he's a new dc, then he won't be as powerful, but if he's about one day away from turning into a gibbering wreck, then he could win.
