Think about it, The Lasers are Lasguns.

Star Wars takes place in a different galaxy before even our current time.
I use to joke that before the DLC ending of Mass Effect 3, it was the prequel to 40K (with the Mass relays destroyed, humanity lost contact with its "empire" in the stars. Civil War would occur on earth in desperation to gather the supplies needed to save themselves and the aliens would eventually die from lack of food. Eventually the most talented Biotics would commit suicide in a crazy circle and give birth to the Emperor.

Terry Gilliam's Brazil is the clearest precursor to the Administratum of the Imperium that exists. And it is a fantastic film.

What's this "Blade Runner" of which you speak...
|
Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek) |

You could probably make an argument for Heavy Metal being in the inspiration stew as well - future orks running around with noisy guns, evil entities from outer dimensions, rundown dystopic cities, etc.

I would say stargate franchise comes pretty close (necrony type guys, the ancients and Asgardians are somewhat reminiscent of the old ones the stargates themselves are a sort of webway).

Dune and Event Horizon both seem like good picks. Actually, Dune would be a great one although if you go by the Dune Encyclopedia timeline the people returning from the scattering would be right around the year 30k. Maybe the Honored Matres were running away from The God Emperor's Crusade?

Witch Hunter Robin (tv series)
Event Horizon

From the first post;
PresidentOfAsia wrote:It may sound weird but I think Akira would be a viable prequel to 40k as well because of the existence of psykers/psychics and how powerful/unstable they are if not trained properly.

Not really a prequel or anything, but when those alien thingies attacked at the end of the avengers movie it is exactly how I see Dark Eldar attacking a human planet. Even had Venoms.
