So i was picked on in school and found out that i really enjoy a good fist fight. What better to fight about than the Slayer sword. The italains got it right on this one. I think that something you spent soooo many hours working on is worth a little black eye. Plus the girls like a man who is willing to be passionate about something they love. So throw down if you are clearly being taken advantage of.

That would be bad.

Why? At best, they have a flimsy metal club. That sword doesn't have a live blade and it's likely not weighted for practical use. I'd be more worried that the guy who won it actually knew how to fight more than that.

Unless it was a "You stole my idea!" moment.
"got nothing"? You mean besides a beautifully painted miniature that you put your heart and soul into that you know makes you one of the best miniature painters in the world?

For the several years I have seen GD reports etc to me if I had to order it by quality it would be...
1st French then German and then tied 3rd place with Italy and Spain, then UK and after that Australian and US ones.
If I had to prove how stupid people can be, GD rumble night fight would be it

Wait! Is that a 54mm Ork. It is a superbly painted model, love the little extra work on the camo pants, the large and deep looking incisions to the skull and the SWR holding on the bosspole.

@Tom: Don't retract as we can only go off of what is shown and offten peoples pictures suck. One thing I have learned over the years is to just go with it as since GD is not an open format judging they go off of whatever was there at the moment. Heck this year in Chicago their were only 4 duel entries and none of them were that great, but since that was all their was that meant somone had to win. If you guys notice the khornate fella in the backround that is the same model that won slayer ummm 2 years ago in Italy I believe.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Well since the incident took place on site and the participants in the altercation could see it in person, I have to retract as they got a good look at it, and I can't say there is any justification in my view that the model was undeserving of placing...
I also have to retract as I said in essence it was mediocre, and it is clearly not, gotta be fair! No need to crap on good work if the only one who needs pooping on is the photographer lol -

Thanks for the much better pictures of that amazing ork miniature. I wish I had posted before those pics were added, so I would have looked prescient. What I was thinking when I saw the first picture of the ork was:
"I bet this is a really good conversion, and I bet it shows a lot of subtle painting techniques that don't show up well on this image."
Turns out I was right. Not only is this an amazing conversion, the mini has a ton of really skillful, really amazing techniques, all done in a way that's not 'showy'.
While many of the entries have amazing freehand work, this one has it, but doesn't feature it. The freehand on the grot's cap; the freehand on the banner (which, for the love of Pete, the ork is standing on. Most people put freehand work front and center in their entry, but this one actually obscures it.
Many of the models show a lot of chipping and weathering, executing a technique very well, but, to me, a bit over-abundantly. This one has a lot of chipping, weathering, and other 'dirtying' of the model, but it's all very subtle. The smoke buildup on the exhaust pipe, the chipped paint on the power klaw...wow!
Several models have blood and gore, but notice the subtle blood spattering and sweat staining on the shirt. Holy cow!
Quite a few models will show off directional lighting and shadowing effects, but check out the shadows on the arm-wraps on that ork. Fantastic job, but not in the least bit obtrusive.
To top it all off, it was a fantastic, very appropriate miniature creation. This would have been an awesome model without a lick of paint.
I feel like the creator of this miniature was almost saying, "Yes, I know all of these techniques, but I don't have to scream about them." The object of a great miniature isn't to show off your mastery of any one (or three) techniques, but to use those techniques to show off your miniature in the best light. Absolutely amazing. Thanks for the great pics. I want this guy to be a special character in the next Forgeworld ork book.

The problem in general, especially with weathering, is if you stick with just one style on a mini then you can dtown it out. Same would go if they just did NNM.

I feel like if the same minis were judged by the same people two weeks later, the results very well could have been different. People get caught up in first, second, and third, better and worse, ranking this way and that... It's an opinionated evaluation of skill, not a fact. These judges have a singlular, personal perspective just like everyone else. There is no real good or bad, just appeals to opinion when it comes to the evaluation of any artistic expression. You ever have a favorite song on an album, only to realize it gets replaced by another a few weeks later?
Just because one mini didn't win over another doesn't mean it's not as good, it just means these particular people didn't like it as much on this particular day. Their judgement isn't absolute truth.
