Subject: Bringing my Chaos army into the 6th Edition
Hi evildrcheese, I have 4 more of those SoB figures and just got my hands on some more of the OOP Raptor backbacks...conversion to Chaos underway shortly...bwahahaaaah!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Here are the pics I promised of the recently completed Death Guard troops and Havocs. There is not a lot of detail on some of these old models, and the red primer was just not the right way to start these. In addition the layering of the bone color was far more painstaking than I was prepared for, especially working on 15 models at a time.
They look a lot better at arm's length, so I am thinking that tabletop views will be AOK.
Champion
Marine
Melta
Havoc with Autocannon
and one more with a "beaky" helmet at his feet
What loyalist chapter should I paint that beaky helmet? I am thinking Space Wolves, as there is a SW player at the FLGS that might appreciate it...

Since getting Typhus painted is one of my goals for November, I decided to do a test on a Termie before I started on the big T. I am planning on doing it in a pale green, with deep brown accents in the recesses. The problem is that I want to match it up to the rest of the Death Guard, so I can't decide if the ribs/details on the legs and torso should be bone or bronze. So I did both on the test model.
Please take a look and let me know which you prefer., Thanks!!
Good morning Dakka! I finished up work on Typhus this morning:
I went with the green and brass with a little purple to keep to the theme that I have developed for my Death Guard. I did not like the "fly" design on the left shoulder pad, so I carved it out with my rotary tool and added back in the tentacle "anenome". These were painted purple, to match the similar features on the Nurgle Predator and some of the other models.
C&C welcome. I'll be working on the Death Guard terminators later this morning, may have pics soon.
Thanks, yes, they have some purple, not as much, I am still thinking about whether or not they are really "done"... I just added some putty to their bases yesterday, to convert them to the 40mm size, so I will re-visit it tomorrow, look at them altogether and make the call.
So I finished up work on the DG Termies, then turned my attention to camoflaging the Crassus and Punisher models to be ready for this coming weekend's gaming.
The next exciting project is going to be another kit-bash/conversion/scratch-build:
Daemon Prince!
This is a Dystopian Wars model, a Prussian "Titan" of some sort (don't know, don't play) that is going to become a Daemon Prince of Chaos Undivided. My inspiration is that this was originally a Techmarine/Warpsmith who ascended to Princehood.
Here is a sketch of the mechanical wings that I am planning to build. They incorporate a couple of jet turbines and possibly articulated sets of "feathers"
I appreciate any thoughts, suggestion or comments that you have before I start this project.
I am really curious to see how the demon prince turns out. Also, I cant tell if is is the pics or not but some of the paint on your models looks like it is really thick.

Thanks, Igloo, I am excited about the project. As for thick paint, yeah, I am trying to learn some new techniques, I have been away from the hobby for about nine years, just started painting again in August. Many of the models were primed (poorly) years ago and I am learning a lot about getting the consistency right.
Yea, for GW paint I thin it about 3 to 1 paint to vallejo thinner. One a light colored base I thin it more because the paint will cover easylly. On a dark backround like black, I might thin it slightly less so it will cover better.

Yea, water woks, but I have noticed the higher surface tension of water as opposed to thinner sometimes makes the paint bead up on the surface as opposed to just going on in a smooth layer like with thinner.

This is exactly what happened with the camo pattern on the armored vehicles I just did:

Automatically Appended Next Post: Mockups of the wings for scale, proportion. Please leave some C&C
I am thinking about this positioning
Here are two shots with a ruler. Are they too big? The tube is going to be a jet turbine, I could make it smaller in diameter...

I think he looks pretty good. Have you considered giving him larger shoulder pads to tie him in with the CSM a little bit more. He kind of has a pre-heresy thing going on and the right shoulders could really set him off. Something like the FW cataphractii maybe?
Moltar wrote: Have you considered giving him larger shoulder pads to tie him in with the CSM a little bit more. . .
Just a thought.
That's a heck of a thing to say, now I have to build shoulder pads! LOL that's a great idea, I love the look of those and they could give him that little extra "heft" that is missing. Also, one of my buds from the FLGS is going to bring some deamon heads to look at, one of them might look cool, bursting out of the chest plate...
I have been busy the past couple of weeks working on some WFB stuff so it would be ready for a 50k+ game we had last Saturday. While I'd still like to get some substantial work done on those models I decided to take a little break and work on the Word Bearers for a bit, to clear my mind, as it were.
Here we have some Havocs:
(Funny, only now in this pic do I see that one of the lazcannons is pointed awkwardly upward...)
Here are some Obliterators (an OOP model and some 3rd party figs I picked up 10 years ago), I know that GW released a new model for this - but I frickin hate it. It looks awful. I did go ahead and re-base these onto 40mm bases to fit the rules.
The theme for this army has a little bit of "Dark Mechanicus" to it, so I think that these "robot-looking" pieces will wind up fitting in better. While the models themselves do not have a lot of detail I am going to dress them up to look the part.
Not sure why I hadn't seen this blog yet but it's excellent! You have some great conversions and I really like how you've incorporated models into your force that were not intended for Chaos
Subbed and will be paying attention once you get back to this.

Subject: Re:Chaos Space Marine Plog - Daemon Prince conversion/scratch-build project
Thank you! I will be back soon, I am in the middle of a Wood Elf Glade Riders conversion project that I started 10 years ago and have decided that I need to finish...
Spoiler:
The Daemon Prince FMC is going to get some shoulder pads and then a paint scheme close to the scheme for this Raptor Sorcerer:
I figure these wings will be good practice before I start the big Nurgle Heldrake Conversion Scratchbuild Project!
After the Havocs and Oblits there are 20-22 more Word Bearers CSM models to do, plus 4 more SoB that will be converted to Raptors (I just got my hands on more of the OOP jump packs!!).
My Lovely Bride has been offered a new job! A "promotion" to the next level up in her field, with a nice, fat raise. So, of course, this means that we are moving. It's only a couple of hours away, still in NH, but it means that we have to pack everything up and relocate...
Therefore, all modeling and painting is going to be on hold for a while, until we get settled in to a new place. I am going to be bringing a "portable" version of my workshop to the hotel where we will be staying until we find a home, so there may be some occasional updates.
In the meantime, I am going to be working on some 40k and Fantasy scenarios, missions and maybe even a podcast. Is that something anyone would be interested in tuning in to?
September update: Whew! Moving and all that other jazz has kept me away from plogging, but I have been building, painting and doing some gaming.
I have a few things in the queue, and will get some additional WIP pics posted shortly.
More SoB-to-Raptor conversions:
FMC Daemon Prince:
Death Shroud Terminators:
Chaos Spawn:
And a possibly NSFW Daemon "Princess":
Spoiler:
Over the next few days I will be able to complete the various bases, and get organized with what is what. In my recent games I have discovered that almost all of my old Termies aren't "legal" anymore, as the models came with combi-bolters (melta, flamer, etc) AND Power Fists... while the new Codex says OR.
The Raptors are awesome!!! I am always happy when I see someone take Sororitas Space Nazis and make them as ugly on the outside as they are on the inside. I really (really) hate SoB.
What model did you base the Daemon Prince on? It looks very RAFM Cthulhu. Can you show a 28mm model next to it for a size comparison? And I really like the Spawn. Conversion possibilities are endless and you can never do it 'wrong' as it's just a jumble of icky drippy pointy nasty things.
And lastly, a GW rant. I put it into a spoiler so I don't junk up your thread.
Spoiler:
The Terminator issue is part of the 'Planned Obsolescence' SOP for GW. They make the 'hot item' from the prev edition completely obsolete in the next (example: tanks in 5th = viable option. Tanks in 6th = bruised to death). In 7th Ed they will have a new 'hot item' and punish anyone that is stupid enough to still use Flyers. They have been doing that sort of thing to me since 3rd ed.
I know they are in the business to make money and stay in business, but I also remember when the games were designed and run by gamers, not accountants. I didn't have any problem paying retail retail price for something that was quality craftsmanship and had a clear purpose in my army. Now I buy all my stuff from eBay, and only the old stufff (i.e not Failcrap resin). I haven't spent a retail dime on GW since Dark Vengeance came out, and that was only becasue I wanted the rulebook.
Side note- NSFW Daemon is hot.

Thanks, Skalk, I appreciate your comments. I have been very busy with lots of other stuff lately, will have updated pics for the SoB Raptors and other CSM goodies later today.
