It might be a money-saver, but you still have to drop a ton of money all at once on paints. When I get paints, I generally buy 3-5 pots at a time, and that to me seems like "a lot". I can't imagine suddenly going out and deciding that I need 50 need paint colors, and buying them all individually. Much less the full range.

I can see this useful if you are a "professional" painter/commission painter so you have all the possible options, but other than that....I can't see much savings in it.

I'm not even sure what demographic they're going for with this. I buy my paints a few at a time as I need them, as do most of the other folks I know who have an established collection of paint. If I want organization I can go to Target and buy cheap Rubbermaid drawers.

I can't imagine some kid's parents dropping the $$$$ on this and then say, a baneblade or a megaforce. Not when the basic painting set is available and comes with brushes/extra minis.

**** I bought the whole set a few months ago before you got the spiffy cardboard box. The organizer is no big deal as I am buying a nice paint rack anyway but having it still sucks to buy something and then a month or two later they make it better and I missed out.

I guess I am the demographic for this. I have a nice job and its not that much money for me. I reached a point in my life that I can buy whatever I want or need for the hobby so I do so. I guess all the years of not being able to afford the hobby and buying stuff in bits and pieces made me say to heck with it and just buy all the paints in one go.

I got a huge paint collection I've built up over time. Don't really need this even if the little shelfy things are cooliez.

Plus I bought Caliban Green recently and discovered there was no actual paint in it. Watch that happen with this set.

And lol, I was expecting this to be like $230. Then I see the price....$450. I checked to make sure my country wasn't set to Australia....It wasn't. You can get FW Titans for this price. Definetly not worth it.

It's a lot of money for an 'ultimate paint set' especially if it doesn't include the Eavy Metal ones, which they're about to drop.

Jeez.... I've been out of the GW loop for the past year or so, the only thing I've purchased has been the Ork Bomma, and prices seem to be going crazy.

I'm in the same boat job wise but I tend to go and buy 3-10 of a coulour at a time to spray with my airbrushes. Having one of each is very useless to me lol.

I would be much happier if they did a *buy 9 get 1 free* promotion

I can see why a retailer would do this. They already have all the paints and they just need to print however many boxes the need to sell a mega set so why not do it. They do not have to package these sets all at once so they wont take up too much inventory space. Also if you put it out there someone will buy it. I am quite surprised they dont do color sets of a dozen paints each. I can see like a basic ork set or basic blood angel set. Really its no skin off the manufacturers back to make sets like this so why not.

Also you do save money if you plan on getting a whole set.

They already do this for High Elves, Dark Angels and Moria Goblins. I haven't priced them out but I don't think it's much of a savings.

Well in my case I am working overseas in Afghanistan ATM so going to my local GW is out of the question and ordering a couple of paints at a time would be a colossal pain in the ass. I also can't do spray paints/spray guns as aerosols can'gt be shipped via APO. So I guess I am a pretty rare person that this kind of deal is beneficial too. Rather than ship my crap from the US then figure out what I needed to fill in and wait weeks and weeks for all the shipments it was just easier to order the whole damn thing at once.

But remember a $450 purchase is a lot in one respect but in another I know guys who spent way more than that on other hobby purchases such as guns, motorcycles or whatever. For someone just getting into the hobby I would recommend purchasing the whole thing in one shot if you could afford it. It allows you to expand your color pallettes you will use and it is darned handy that you don't have to stop your painting to run out and buy that one paint color you were missing.

I'd rather have a new army than all the paints. I wonder how many of these actually sell each year, they keep doing it so someone must be buying them.

Look at the calendars, gents. This particular kind of big-ticket item isn't for us, or for casual purchases (regardless of whether it's actually a casual purchase or not for any given one of us). It's very much out there for the Christmas-gift crowd.

As for cheaper alternatives that are far from Cheap and Nasty - check out the various Vallejo 72-paint sets. My wife got me the Model Air set for my birthday and I couldn't be happier. I've shored it up with another dozen or so colours and I'm set quite nicely.

It is a set of paints, and the set is limited supply.
Last limited set contained 2 colours that were released several months later with the new colour system.

Welcome.
Just heard an official statement that these colours will not get a separate release. Though sometimes, official statements can be wrong.

It's nearly 40% savings when you get it from an online discounter like MiniatureMarket. Don't know if that's good enough given the relatively narrow range of paints most people seem to use. If you don't paint a lot or only use ten or so colors, then this isn't the product you want. If you do paint frequently and are willing to go outside your comfort zone, this may be a decent deal. The problem with last years' was that I had absolutely no need for the carrying case that came with it. This year, with more paint and no case it seems to be a better deal.

But the part of the discount you get from the discounters applies just as well if you buy the paints in smaller sets, as well as to the usual suspects of competing products, including the "get-em-all" deal sets offered by companies such as Army Painter, Vallejo, etc.., etc.. .

I'll probably pick up the Edge Paint Set. I have a use for a set of nice pastels, even if they're not going to be used ultra-frequently.

I don't think GW has much of a discount on their starter paint sets but I haven't priced them out. I also thought that Vallejo was more like last year's paints instead of the new stuff but I don't buy that brand so I don't really know. Regardless, my point is that you need to look at your own situation and decide for yourself. For instance, I don't know if I'll get any of the Heavy Metal "Edge" stuff. I'm not that good to where it will really matter on my models. Maybe one day when I'm competing for Golden Demons...

Yeah, the Vallejo paints aren't direct analogues to the new range - they still match up to the previous range - as well as some even older paints, that GW discontinued earlier. The Model Air range also doesn't match up to the GW range, but you know, I'm not talking about getting paints that directly analogue the new paint sets, but just getting hold of a large batch of useful paints.

It doesn't matter much at all, especially for fantasy or IG, or Tyranid etc armies - it really only matters if you're painting Blood Angels/Ultramarines/etc according to the exact (revised, 2012, disregard the last 10 years of colour palettes) GW paint scheme.

Another product that I think is cool...
I have to admit, the colors on the drawers is nifty.
Yes, I could make my own rack, and do that...or I could just buy it.
I think yes, its on there for grandma to buy for a present, or for those who making one big purchase makes sense (for some it does).

BUT...
I would have rather seen the product development go toward existing demand (tau, eldar, sisters etc.) products.

on an very related note;
Does anyone know the shelf life of the NEW paint line?
(assuming you keep them at room temp, and add a drop or two of water over time).

I would have concerns that many could go bad before i would ever use them.

GW paints are now just as expensive as Vallejo paints, which are of far superior quality... Why would anybody buy GW paints?

Some people might like them, or may like the fact they can get a guide that says "you want a mini that looks like this one, use these specific color paints".

Don't get me wrong, 90% of my paints are either vallejo or reaper. But being a person who is "color challenged" I can see the value in having a guide that tells me which colors to use.

Not to turn this into a GW vs other paint thread, but I strongly disagree with that. Vallejo have horrible separation issues. I shake the bottles for a good period of time and the paint still comes out separated. They do not cover as well as GW and I am not a fan of the droppers. I have used GW, P3, Vallejo, and Reaper. Don't use P3 because that much because I can't get my hands locally on it. My FLGS dropped them after distribution issues made it hard to get restocks. I have the smallest experience with Reaper, but have liked what I have seen so far. Their linen white is my favorite white now.

There's not a lot of product development involved. Design a nice looking box. Image it. Job done!

There's no way of knowing the shelf life of the new paint - it's simply far too new...

For my money, the GW paints are about twice as expensive as Vallejo. Having said that, I've tried and liked a lot of the new range, which resulted in me buying quite a decent amount of them. The new base colours are particularly good.

Many Vallejo paints do indeed have serious separation issues (separation anxiety? ) I fix this up by adding a couple of small lava beads (thanks ebay!) inot the droppers to use as agitators. It works rather well, and I actually drop a couple into each pot of paint I buy from any and all manufacturers now, just to help the paint mixing along.
