I'm not sure how to take this!

My personal designs for this faction are kind of fantasy-high-tech'y though, one of the other factions would be more akin to the rough edges and blocky designs of the Imperium.

I made a page for you facebooker's : http://www.facebook.com/MichaelRookardArt go like it!

Also, here's some more. This is specifically to show to a client since their 'concept art' looks exactly like this...

The handle on the sword-staff looks bent out of shape.

Yeah the sword is at a really weird angle.

I was going to make it all crazy blurred and stuff, but I ended up putting it into his hand after all... although I still plan on blurring it up quite a bit since it has like crazy slashes following behind it.

Still got a few hours to go on the final paint, but its coming along.

Here is my initial color, you can see what I had in mind for the blade.

Its much farther along than this now, but not finished. SOON

The intent is that its moving so fast it looks like its bending, the blur helps!

Also, final

Now that it's coloured it looks fine, weird how just adding colour can improve things.

I'm not sure I totally see the connection Daed's style seems rough and rugged looking where with Anima it's more clean and delicate looking.

I wouldn't call Anima delicate so much as well, in classic anime fashion, style is more important than substance. So, for example, all these incredibly intricate hairstyles and outfits that JRPG characters prance around in, and their baroque, OTT weaponry. Daed's wall'o'weapons put me in mind of that.

I'd say my style is a crazy mashup of 40k, Halo, Darksiders/JoeMad with a dash of Cthulu.

But in brushwork, I do tend more towards visible brush strokes rather than anything super smooth.

So when you guys say Anima, do you mean anime? or is Anima something else?

Well, maybe not delicate but it has very precise, sharp, clean lines but with Daed you can see scratches and dents in the armour his lines are often more rough looking too.

By Anima I think Manchu means this sort of stuff (not something I'm really fond of btw).

It's a product line published by FFG.

I agree with your assessment on both counts. Again, I was talking about the one example, the panel of weapons.

When it comes to my overall opinion on your work -- let me just say this, your work for Heavy Gear in the OP impresses me so much that it seriously makes me consider buying into that game ... which I believe is what the company probably had in mind when hiring you.

Hey Anima looks cool, and I'd totally work on it and make some super clean stuff if FFG asked me to work on it

Also, totally linking the AD to this post so he can see that

They aren't all robots, that's the armor that people wear (I think).

Not all robots? There will be Cyriss people? Hmm, I didn't follow that N&R thread too well, it seems

I'm looking forward to that release. Hope you get to do more Cyriss art.

Oh man guys, so this weekend I met with the ADs from Paizo, D&D, Blizzard, and Magic (and Tor books, but that doesn't count as much for this stuff).

Might be doing work for all of them

Warhammer!

Trials of Draigo – Nurgles Garden

“Draigo unleashed sanctified flame again amongst the writhing jungles of Nurgle’s domain, and for a long time the gusting Warp-winds carried only the charcoal stench and the tortured screams of daemonic vegetation.”

No this wasn't for FFG.

I bloody hope not; it looks terrible!

Just kidding! It looks great.

Why does Draigo have a plague sword?

Its not a plague sword, but it is the sword he forged using the remnants of the bloodthirster axe.

Ah. I guess that makes sense then (insofar as anything written by Ward can make sense).

More arts for DRAIGO

http://galefire.com/2013/05/trials-of-draigo-whispers-of-corruption/

one more and then I am done with the 'Trials of Draigo' series; not sure what to do after that. Thinking about some more "fantasy fantasy" art, might be sell-able at something like the Renaissance festival here.

Another friend suggested Steampunk, which is basically a faction in my Galefire world anyway, that is quite popular now; and people might buy prints of.

Definitely trying to do compositions that work on cards a bit more now, since there are tons of those things and they need art for them (Draigo are book covers).

Should I post this stuff in the 40k background section or something? just seems like general discussion I get no traction anymore... :(

Also Draigo falls to Slaneesh... WHHAAAATTTT??? End of series confirmed.

Longtime Dakkanaut

Scotland

Various artist have had success posting in the painting and modelling Showcase.

I have been noticing a couple artists on Dakka and noticed you on the videogame boards. (Oh btw check out fellow dakkanaut His Masters Voice's Artwork . There's a link to his site on his profile).

I have to say your Hard Surface stuff is VERY nice, those weapon Splash pages in particular are VERY professional, really sharp and nicely rendered. I can see why big publishers like PP have commissioned those. Also the line-work you've posted was gorgeous. You've clearly got a great control with the stylus/pen, it's in that piece of line-work that i really saw Todd Macfarlane.

However.
I am going to go out on a limb and guess you are not a classically trained artist, or at least you are a self-taught one. To me this is apparent in your soft-surface stuff, the anatomy is not that good and to a lesser extent your perspective/foreshortening work in general is often unsatisfying. The only reason i am being critical is because you have a great talent for rendering, it's just, for me, it is wasted on some poor grasp of the 'fundamentals'. Now i predict some resistance to this appraisal, you may like to claim it's 'exaggerated' or 'intentionally skewed' or some such, i don't feel this is credible as i can appreciate Anime art and i love Adrian Smith space marines, because they have the 'fundamentals' locked.

Now, finally i will give some examples from what i feel was the weakest piece to show what i mean:
[Picture of red female warrior fighting Chaos marines]
Spoiler:
-Right side of her head is too small, cropped by hair, does not match the shape of her left brow.
-Foreshortened lower right leg does not project from the correct angle from the knee, knee is too large.
-Foreshortened lower right leg is far too short.
- Right leg does not enter the pelvis in a realistic manner. Right thigh is, on present course, going to join the top of her left thigh.
-[Fairly opinion based] The balance between her hips and shoulders is incredibly masculine. I.e. it is not that of female human.
-Her Hips are not anatomically symmetrical and, as previously mentioned, she lacks a groin.
-Her Backpack is certainly not symmetrical, although it's not clear if that's intentional.
-If the diagonal line down her chest from that skull pendant is the edge of her left armoured *ahem* 'cup' it does not project far enough away from her gorget or lower rib armour.
-The chaos Marines' bolt guns appear to have been drawn in orthographic view and not persepective and as a result look grossly skewed. I would suggest looking into practising vanishing points and getting a feel for a 3d view in Perspective or Orthographic in a program like blender or sketch up just to see the difference (this was by far the worst part of the picture).

To get down to brass tacks though, it doesn't matter, if you're making money from it.

Hey Perkustin,
I appreciate your candid review, and you're right, I am self-taught. I thought I had it all figured out in college, I didn't need any dumb art classes! Sigh...

I'm not going to say I over-exaggerate and I mean to, or anything like that, my rendering is simply better than my anatomy and figure drawing because I've spent a lot of time on that stuff, and not enough on anatomy and figure drawing.

However, that is something I am taking pretty seriously now, and doing my best to improve it. I actually TAKE reference shots now, as opposed to just drawing off the cuff before, which I totally did with that piece you broke down (its not really my best work, and not in my portfolio).

That piece is considerably old at this point, at least I think so, but yea, its kind of bad

I'll check out the paint and modeling showcase, but I probably wouldn't be posting that one you don't like

edit: I went ahead and made a thread in there; so from now on I'll keep this one just to published work I've done.
