Either one, in many cases. Most folks seem to find PFs/LCs a bit weedy, compared to stock PKs, but that's purely an aesthetic call. There's a decent bit of leeway when using kitbashed or scratchbuilt wargear (again, especially with orks), so as long as the bit is at least a vaguely plausible representation of its rules and you make it clear to your opponent what is what. Using a LC as a PK or a choppa would probably fly; using one as a big shoota would not (that's proxy territory - plenty of discussion on "counts as" vs. "proxy" elsewhere that may help cement your feel for generally accepted limitation. It's worth a look.).

Granted, not all opponents will be 100% open to all counts as modeling, whether for wargear or entire models, but the Rule of Cool can work in your favor - the more awesome the conversion looks, the more likely people are to accept it.

For example, Insaniak's POGOrk has the guns, has the klaw/saw, and has a means of increased movement distance - you can see how it might function in the same capacity as a bike, even if it looks nothing like one. Having to remember "that guy is a biker, even without wheels" is a small price to pay to have such a unique and characterful model on the table.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

wow these are all really cool and a lot better than what I'm working on, but I can't pass up a chance at shameless self promotion:
here's a buggy I made from trukk parts:

and here's what I did with the rest of the trukk as well as some bitz I had laying around:

I've also made a female ork big mek (she was human then she got hit with an orky DNA mutagen):

then this is my version of mega armor for my Samurai Orks:

that's about it for the big conversions, the rest are pretty much just helmets and leg armor. check out the link in my sig if you want more

My conversions aren't the best, but they were fun and I think they look cool.

Spoiler:

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.

All the conversions here are great!. I had been considering Orks for a while, but as my main army is IG, all my resources are geared towards it. My main exposure to Orks so far has been to 'reverse desecrate' their equipment to be Imperial. Of course that means quite a bit of Ork bitz. I might have to try some of these just, you know, for practice. No way will it cause me to go green....right?

I don't know if anyone is still on here but I'm looking for some images of converted/modified 2nd edition gretchin for inspiration. The old single pose grots (that are all over ebay) are being used as I run 70 grots but I want to spice them up. Pics or links to pics would be much appreciated.

I find building Ork vehicles makes for a fun project.

Mixing different kits together with whatever garbage you have lying around.

You can even use pieces from models outside of 40k. There are plenty of hobby stores that sell real life vehicle replicas.
