I'm planning on doing a pre-heresy World Eaters legion. I have a post-heresy World Eaters force at the moment. I do like my World Eaters

I very rarely see an early heresy Death Guards army. Maybe that's because the green in the heresy book is a bit... strange.

World Eaters are ridiculously common for a pre-heresy force. Ditto for Night Lords (though that's usually normal night lords - chaos-ey bits). I'm seeing more and more people doing Emperors Children too, but they are a good side to choose, very distinctive.

I'm having a go at Sons of Horus, but the colour scheme(S!) are driving me nuts.

Pre-heresy Iron Warriors would be interesting, they'd literally look like Knights in SPAAAACEEEE

I would suggest either Pre-Heresy Salamanders, Iron Hands, or Imperial Fists.

I'd go with Imperial Fists or Salamanders, their colors stick out a bit more than the black and white of most other pre-heresy legions.

Has anyone ever considered doing the 'forgotten' or 'purged'? I figure it would be really cool to design a legion from the ground up, coming up with a primarch and all that jazz.

The problem with creating your own legion is the complete lack of any fluff or background at all. There is just nothing to go on, will you just give them a color scheme and call them the untouchables or something. How long have they been gone, if they were already tainted by chaos then they might look no different than the chaos space marines we have now. Another thing to consider is how you would get a respectable Primarch, one who could stand as imposing as Horus will look, or as menacing as Angron looks now. I am sure there are guys out there with the chops to kitbash something together but I am not one of them.

Also half the fun in doing a preheresy army is using the preheresey models, imagine the modifications you would have to do.

I'd say Alpha because i love em, but I feel that Iron Hands get the least amount of loving so you should do them.

(A poll wouldn't be bad)

Well, everyone has their own definition of what a large poll is I suppose.

Alpha Legion cos they have 2 primarchs
