This. Unless they met behind the scenes (which I don't think is going to happen) then I'm not expect Wrath of Khan II. I personally am still pulling for it being Khan though, but rather this will be their first encounter in the new timeline. After all, Khan hardly needs Kirk to give him a reason to start cleansing the world of the weak

It would be fairly easy to rewrite Khan's back story such that Pike marooned him.

NO NO NO STII was epic awesome. You can't top that. NO NO NO!!!

If it is Khan, that will be bad news, not least because a clear lack of original thought. As much as I like bond, new batman etc, does anybody else yearn for original ideas instead of Bond 23, batman re-boot, spiderman re-botting a re-boot etc etc

Agreed. Seriously. STII was a classic.

For those who have missed it there is a scene at the end of the newest trailer (from Japan) that is very reminiscent of:

Spoiler:
Spock's death in Wrath of Khan

I was reading an article that apparently Abrams doesn't want to do a remake, but has given serious consideration to using characters from the previous movies...so it's a good possibility that Khan is the villan.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

If it is Khan...well, Benedict Cumberbatch is a fine actor, but Ricardo Montalbán will always be Khan to me.

Agreed; he was amazing in the Sherlock series.

But after watching the trailer again...the villain is wearing a Starfleet shirt...it might be Gary Mitchell...

The question is when would Pike have gotten around to it?
If its Khan it will be because Botany Bay made its way back to earth or found some other star fleet ship and hitched a ride. But not marooned.
Gary Mitchell is even iffy because unless they've let some time pass he's too young to be on a starship. Because Kirk was his instructor, and in this timeline he's skipped all that and jumped to captain, but also if he's just in Mitchell's too young by at least a few years.
While I agree the blonde and the crazy powerful guy seem to point to GM, I would opine that is not the case.

Outside the DarkTower, amongst the roses.

So it is most likely one of these three.

Garth of Izar - http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Garth_of_Izar

Khan Noonien Singh - http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Khan_Noonien_Singh

Or maybe Peter Weller is Khan and Cumberbatch is Joachim.

Gary Mitchell - http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Gary_Mitchell

Of course the trailer looks like an action movie. Star Trek fans will likely go see it since it says Star Trek. Or they already won't because they hated the reboot. What a generic action trailer does is drag in the younger generation that didn't grow up on various Star Treks and creates a larger appeal base.

As a sidenote I've found that I'm only okay with certain reboot franchises. The Norton "Hulk", Bale's Batman's, and Star Trek being some of them with others like Spider-man, the last Superman, and some others less so.

Garth is a good guess. That episode is the iconic "No I'm the Real Me!" moment of television and is surely something that would be as memorable to ST fans as Khan.

Looks good .. I liked the last one better than any of the old movies.. the only old one I ever really liked was part 2. I like the more action movie feel a lot more, even though that's probably the opposite of what most of the trekkie/trekker types want.
