Being rich?
This, gary kasparov wad paid 37 million to play one game in russia, guitar is only a gimmick to get laid. Being charming and handsome works better.
I was scouted and played for the best team in england at county level when I was younger, but I was kicked off the team because I wasn't privately educated and took a dislike to a very pompus child named Barnaby who flaunted his wealth everywhere. Turns out his mother funded the club
In face to face chess I'm around grade 160-175 when on form, my best win was against an International master at grade 215 using the english system using the ELO which is more commonly used I'm grade
1880-2000 a grandmaster being 2500 grade or higher the guy I beat being 2320.
Online I'm hopeless I never concetrate never take time on my moves and so on as such I hover around the 1400-1500 mark.

I had to quit playing Chess; too many concussions.

I had to go to rehab after too many chess games, so many hard drugs who would have thought chess has such a sleazy side too it, although having sex with the groupies is pretty fun.

Then you either flaunted it or were going to be hit anyway. I favour the latter.
I apologize for giving in to the urge for a potentially thread-derailing joke. I had just also read the thread about the 10 year old boxing kid, and found the contrast funny.
I was never very good at Chess. Although I found that I actually got a little better after I started playing wargames.

Bingo!
By which I mean you're correct. Bingo doesn't really help you get laid unless you like more *ahem* 'mature' lady. In all seriousness, chess is a game I have played, and to which I know the rules, but I'm fething godawful at it. I'm too impatient for the game.
All the memorization kills me. I just don't enjoy it, sadly.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm sure you have hobbies into which you put a great deal of effort and energy, but if it's something you enjoy, then it's a pleasure to do so.
I admire the clarity and elegance of Chess. But the skills you need to really be good at it aren't ones I enjoy enough to work hard to acquire.

I was a member of my Primary schools chess club, back in the mid-late 80's... We were terrible!
I don't really play now, except against the computer when I'm feeling particularly masochistic. The last game I played took 8 hours because myself and my opponent where a little, ummm, smoked out
The longest game I had was 5 hours, you become really shattered, my average in face to face is 2 hours.
It's hassle and effort if you want to become very good.
At my school tournament I beat everyone but one person in 4 moves and one in 2.
I'm planning to get back into the tournaments, but I need more theoory work on openings. Mostly the defences as black, I used to do the french defense the sicilian and the hippo a bit rusty on the hippo.
Mostly on white I go for a four knights but I'm thinking of some agressive gambits.
Mini-Props to anyone who can tell me the four and two move mate moves. Ignoring the opponents moves on the four move but giving the opponents moves on the two move.
Anyone got any agressive openings they use for black or white?

I used to play Chess, but I prefer Go now. it's the difference between a maneuver strategy and an attrition strategy.
also I was going to make a thread for this, but I think it may be better here, saw this on CNN yesterday and it warmed my heart:

That's a nice thing. It really is nice to see chess is common in all enviroments.
