Well your counting is very generous. Name and background doesn't count dude. Especially because names were given by the organisers as far as I know.
In addition putting some snow in the base is a joke. Come on, in entry 11 the snow is not even glue (at least it look unglue to me), I bet this guy already remove it.
I would count entries 4, 5, 7, 11 and 15 as having no theme at all.

Well in any case don't pay attention to me. I have no entry in the contest so I give my opinion only as a voter.

Dude you are right, after your comment at 12.42 I did a shoot of my screen to see if there were more votes entering after the deadline. I just checked it and the count has changes as follow

Entrant #2: 210>213
Entrant #4: 119>122
Entrant #8: 220>222
Entrant #11: 197>205
Entrant #13: 174>178

Funny...

Even when my favorite is there I have the feeling that something went wrong with the spirit of the contest. In the original post is was clear that it was not only a painting contest but special emphasis was given to Christmas related entries. This point was not mention in the voting post what could be the reason why some of the clear holidays related models are out of the 5.

Now we end up having 5 model from where 2 have no Christmas theme at all (and 2 only a little bit) while others such as 3, 9 and 14 (Clearly Christmas related) are out. I kind of feel sorry for such entries since these people put extra effort and imagination to make their models fit the topic and now end up having models modified for the contest that is gonna be ridiculous to used them for the game due to the holiday theme. Is hard to imagine entry 3 on a table of a Western base game...

I guess there were a lot of "Friends" voting here and paying no attention to the spirit of the contest...

Something similar is observe if we only consider the painting skills. Entries 4 and 11 in the final? seriously? And some excellent minis, such as 9 and 14, are out!!!

Well let see what happens now....

There always will be inherent risks with a painting competition that is run using public voting of people voting based on different criteria then we personally feel to be important and/or for someone to try to push for a bunch of votes from their friends, etc.

That is one of the reasons why we do have a private final judging to try to ensure that worthy entries end up with the prizes. We also typically hold a little something back to give out as a prize for a worthy entry that we feel might have gotten snubbed.

Obviously we could eliminate the voting and just go with the private judging method, but then the whole experience loses so much of the fun that comes from public participation.

The goal of these things is to inspire people to get out and paint some models that they might not have otherwise, and nothing more. If the prizes are so large that we're getting voting shenanigans, then we'll need to make sure we offer less next time so that people that enter are doing so for the right reasons, with any prizes they win being a nice cherry on top.

As one of the contestants, but not one of the ones you have mentioned, I agree with your comments.
I was also disappointed when the deadline was extended after I had submitted my entry.
We were offered the chance to 'keep tweeking' but I felt it put those that had planned and managed their projects at a disadvantage to those who would not have completed by the original deadline.
In addition entries #2 and #3 have more than one mini in the photo despite the rules stating the entries should include only one.
This was the first time I have entered a DakkaDakka painting competition and, due to the shifting deadline and the elements you have highlighted, probably the last.

I'm really sorry to hear that, and I apologize profusely for the issue.

I made the call to extend the deadline because 3 weeks really wasn't enough time for the contest and we shouldn't have run it with that deadline anyway. But due to planning issues on my part, the contest was started much later than expected and I was afraid of it running into the holidays too much, so we tried to do 3 weeks, which in hindsight was a mistake.

So hopefully you can accept my apology and know that in the future we will make every effort to never change the entry deadline again (and never try to run such a contest in less than 4 weeks).

Oh, and the voting continues in this thread as long as it remains unlocked. We did take note of the votes at the deadline time however. I will lock the thread to remove confusion for the time being while we do the private judging.

Again, my sincere apologies to anyone who felt slighted by the deadline being extended. It was done as an act of kindness to allow people to finish their entries and based upon my own personal error of allowing the contest to be posted with a 3 week deadline (which we shouldn't have done in the first place).

Okay folks, what an amazing range of entries we received for this challenge. I don't think I'd be going out on a limb to say that IMHO our winner this time is the most amazing paint job we've seen for a Dakka Painting Challenge yet (and that's saying something).

If you missed the contest rules and wanted to refresh yourself on the contest theme, please check it out here.

But anyway, without further adieu, here are the top 3 final prize winners (you can of course click on these pics to see a larger version of them in the Dakka gallery):

Our overall amazing winner was entry #2:

Dreamer and Lord Chompy Bits, Holy Night, Source Light by spiralingcadaver

Winning a couple of extremely rare limited edition models: Hanging Tree (2012 GenCon Special Edition Nightmare Model) & Santana Ortega (Henchmen Exclusive Special Edition Model):

Our second place winner was entry #13:

Miss Terious, Who's under the Mistletoe? by Bacms

Winning: a Mei Fang and the Rail Crew Box Set (New Arcanists/10 Thunders Masters Master, Plastic starter box), Miss Terious (2012 GenCon Special Edition Model) & Master/Sidekick Puppet Wars sprue (contains 8 plastic puppets):

Our third place winner was entry #8:

Miss Terious, A Miss Terious Gift Giver by Benhur

Winning a Master/Sidekick Puppet Wars sprue (contains 8 plastic puppets) & Misaki, The Thunder Box Set (New 10 Thunders Master, Plastic starter box):

And just to round out the judged results for the top 5, our 4th and 5th place finishers were:

Fourth place was entry #11:

The Judge, On a Cold Winter's Day by Vearun:

Fifth place was entry #4:

Lady Justice, Avatar of Balance by anarchysince88:

We also sometimes like to hold back an extra prize to give to a worthy entry that we feel just missed the cut (in our opinion), so this time, our best runner-up prize winner was entry #9:

NIcodem, The Undertaker, Bah Humbug! by shaun417

Winning a Misaki, The Thunder Box Set (New 10 Thunders Master, Plastic starter box):

A big congratulations to our top 3 prize winners as well as a big thanks to everyone who participated...you all did an amazing job!

All of the entries on the first page now have their user names included, letting you know what amazingly talented people turned in which entries. Make sure you give out holiday cheer to ALL of the entrants who took the time to enter!

A massive thanks again goes out to Wyrd Games for their amazing support towards the Dakka community and if you haven't checked out their site or Malifaux before, now's the time!

Prize winners, please PM your shipping information to Alfndrate (if he doesn't PM you first). The prizes likely will not ship until after new years, but we'll keep you updated via PM. Congrats again!

3rd place excellent!!!!

Thanks a lot to the organisers and all people that voted my model. This was my first Dakka contest and an insane experience. Everything was so quick. I learned about the contest by another contestant (Darios) 2 weeks before Deadline (the original one). Painted as quick as possible but 3 days before the closing date my wife gave birth to my first son so i spent the rest of the time (including the extra week) on the hospital. I even took the picture in a hurry one night that returned home for a shower. I ended up sending it just in time for the first dead line. It was so tight in time and so much fun that I love it!!!! Cannot wait for the next contest!!!

Congratulations to spiralingcadaver and Bacms. Excellent pieces and fair winners of the competitions. Also congrats to the organiser for giving an special price to shaun417's model. It is an incredible pice and it was a petty it wasn't on the top 5.

Merry Christmast to all!!!

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to Dakka for putting this together. My dreamer has a theme for each of the nightmares in his crew so the christmas themed alps fits right in to the overall theme of my crew. Just need to paint up the other two in a similar fashion and they will be good to go.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for organizing this, and I was pretty surprised to see a first here, with this being only my second painting competition!

Some very nice entries (and stiff competition) all around here, and congrats to the other winners. (Also, to the winners, I was hoping to feature your entries on my blog-- if you have any citation you'd want (username/actual name, website, and/or anything else) or if you don't want your entry on my blog, please PM me.)

And, of course, Mery Christmas, since it's that time.

More then half of them aren't Christmas related which was disappointing. It's always exciting to see people's holiday conversion but that contest was atrocious.

Enjoyed the criticism, I'm sure it was meant constructively and positively, and took into account that the theme was entirely described as optional to the painting contest
