If you’re thinking about the extra pre-order crap you get with video games these days, that’s quite a bit different.
They’re the gaming industry’s publishers reacting to the used game and online sales market. By offering incentives to in-store purchases they’re trying to curb the buying of used games and online distribution. Discounts on pre-orders are pretty much for the same thing (“Pre-order it here for a 10% discount and please don’t buy it on Steam!!!”).
Moreover that extra crap usually comes out anyway once the game’s been out for a while. Most recent example is the “Ottoman Empire” version of the last Assassin’s Creed game. It comes with every bit of pre-order nonsense, all the later DLC and all that other stuff publishers are stuffing down our throats.
These limited edition things for the various KS projects are likely only to see the light of day at conventions, and even then it’ll probably just to sell the excess (ie. if there were 7248 backers, and the casting company would only do production runs of 8000, then they’ve got another 752 limited edition minis to shift, so they become convention exclusives).

Whilst I wholeheartedly agree, personally, I would prefer there be a separate Crowd-Funding forum where continuing conversations on these projects can flourish and thrive outside of the News & Rumors section. I still think big pieces of crowd-funding/crowd-sourcing and project news have their place in News & Rumors. But, any more, it feels like News & Rumors has become the Crowd-Funding forum with News & Rumors peppered in for good measure.
Believe me, I love news and information on new games, models, and projects ... I just don't like the conversation about the games/models/projects to overshadow the actual news about them.
Digging through 40+ pages of comments, both relevant to the game/model/project, to get to the actual news ... doesn't feel right to me ... know what I mean?
Am I alone in this feeling?

I can see where you're coming from,
but don't see the difference between long rambling discussions about KS projects and long rambling discussions about anything else such as Dark Angels which is currently ongoing or Chaos which had recently been locked
and actually while the KS projects are ongoing you often get lots of real news released, whereas a GW 'news' thread is often tiny rumour, months of speculation/wishlisting, white dwarf leak, lots more speculation/wishlisting even tho the information is out there. They seem the same to me.
I can, however see the reason for moving KS threads once thier project ends (although hopefully we won't be blocked from having a company X news thread where new sculpts, release dates etc can be posted)

I don't think a thread should be within the top 20 topics in News & Rumors when it's kickstarter ended more then 6 months ago. I think this is a good compromise. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, the old threads leave tombstones\shadows in N&R? Nicely done.

Maybe DakkaDakka should have a separate kickstarter area for all kickstarter news and rumours. Don't get me wrong, kickstarters are great for the industry, but it can be annoying for people who are looking for non-kickstarter threads. I have often found myself wondering where the Forgeworld thread has gone, only to realise that it has been backed up a couple of pages due to the sheer amount of kickstarters coming in. I end up having to the search which gets me to the thread eventually, but if I were to type in a word like 'Forgeworld' or 'Warmachine' it ends up giving me every single post with that word instead of the thread I want to look at. So maybe what Dakka needs is a search where it will only search thread names and OP's or a separate crowd funding area.
