Hey everyone! It's been a long time since I've posted in this blog and also a good year since I've been able to find time to paint. However I'm back in the game now.

A friend of mine just gave me a bunch of his mini's that he's not using any more so the Dark Angels 5th company ranks have grown by an Assault Squad (plus Resin Assault Chaplain), 5 man tactical squad, 5 man scout squad and a Rhino. I also scored a Citadel Spray Gun to make priming a bit quicker, just gonna give it a clean and flush it out and then hopefully I should be able to start knocking out some mini's double time.

Here's 5th Company proudly defending Mt Vader. Sackboy counts as Dreadnought! Also have all the commander models from Dark Vengeance, but they're still boxed up until my skills improve.

Thanks man. I smashed out 4 marines and a scout last night so hopefully should have some more pics soon, just gotta do the highlights and fiddly bits.

First time I've ever painted a scout. Enjoyed it and I think it looks okay.

Hey guys,

Been getting stuck in. Here's a couple of pics. Sorry about the quality, my camera is busted so I've been using my phone. Firstly, it's the first Scout to join the 5th Company. This guy looks heaps better irl, this picture is pretty crappy. Still need to highlight and touch up the hair which admittedly looks terrible at the moment:

Started putting together my Assault Squad again. Will take some other WIP shots of the whole squad later, but for now this is my first ever painted assault marine. Still got a bit of touching up to do and the Bolt Pistol needs drilling.

Soooo, here's my first attempt at a fancy, dynamic base for an assault marine. Layed cork, sealed with PVA and a pin running through the tallest part. Hoping this will all come together nicely and not all fall to pieces in a steaming pile of crud!

Here's my next one. Spent a bit more time on this guy and I decided to go back to my original highlight scheme of Warpstone Glow and Moot green. When looking at the above model and this one side by side, I do like this highlight scheme a lot better just takes a hell of a lot longer to do:

Loving the assault marines, dude. I'm not gonna try doing the fancy base thing, but I am currently working on some Dark Angels Assault Marines of my own (mine are 3rd company however). I like your scout guy too. Keep up the good work!

Thanks man. I'm actually planning on going back to the brighter highlights. Next to my other marines it just doesn't pop as much as I want it too. I'm gonna try and tone back the brightness with some washes, instead of removing it completely.

Could you do me one favour, try taking your pics against a darker background, it is currently muting the darker tones with the bright backdrop.

Cheers man. I used to have a lightbox with a bunch of different backdrops but it got destroyed when we moved houses. Going to buy another one off eBay soonish. At the moment they're just on a sheet of paper, outside where the light is a bit better.

For the brighter models it's Warpstone Glow and then Moot Green on the corners and then a wash over the highlights with Biel-Tan Green. For the duller ones that I tried it was just Caliban Green with some Cadian Fleshtone mixed in.

What colour would you recommend painting it?

Your models are dark enough, go with black, maybe just dusting on the grey side of the cardboard, make it cloudy.

What it comes down to, is your camera is compensating for all that white, loose the white.

Got a fair bit done on the Land Speeder last night. Got the pilot glued in and painted, controls painted and chassis glued together with minimal problems. Some very slight misalignments but easily resolved by just clamping everything together for 20 mins. Pretty happy with the fit seeing as it's the first vehicle I've put together from scratch. I don't count the bikes, lol. Going to glue the other parts tonight and start on the gunner.

I've got two still on sprue that I need to assemble and paint by the middle of September, so I was wondering: is there is anything I should look to do to make them go together easier? One of them is the newer kit, the other is one of the godawful old ones (an eBay score). On ones I've done in the past, I've just tied rubber bands around them while the glue dried, but I ended up with ugly gaps that I just tried to ignore as best I could.

Well, I'm probably not the best to be giving tips since this is my First and Only.

Pretty sure mine is one of the older ones. The only issue I had was getting the seat piece flush with the undercarriage which resulted in a little bit of a gap in the front end at the sides when I fitted the top of the chassis. I'll fill it eventually and it's only a small gap, but if I had of gotten the floor flush it should have snapped together a lot cleaner.

My only advice would be to take your time and know exactly where you need to put the glue for it to sit flush and be secure. Rubber bands will work fine, I just held it together tightly in my hands for 10 mins or so while watching TV and then put it down to rest for the rest of the night.

Time for another update my fellow... Dakkaites?... Dakkaians?... Daks and Dakkquettes?

Work on the Land Speeder has progressed well, but I've hit a road block. Because I don't have a base for this thing at the moment, I can't paint it without rubbing off the highlights pretty quick. So this is the stage I've gotten to now, and here it shall stay until I either get a base and mount it, or pin it to something that I can hold instead. I also plan on magnetizing the Heavy Bolter and Multi-Melta so that I can swap them out whenever. I'll post some pics when I get around to doing that.

Secondly, I've ordered a whole bunch of these cool little bullet casings from here: http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=40&products_id=151 and I plan on touching up all my bases with a few spent casings laying around. For a while I've been thinking my bases just needed something else small to make them look complete and I am thinking that will be it. The idea came from when I was looking at my deathwing and realized that with their larger bases, I probably am not gonna get away with what I've been doing so far.

Another quick update, this time some filthy xenos.

Mrs PTR has finally put brush to model again in an attempt to get her guardians completely finished. I think they're looking rather snazzy but she's convinced they're the worst models in the world. The bases still have some work to do and the weapons platform needs to be magnetized and the weapons painted, but otherwise pretty much done.
