It's surprising that the most popular tabletop game has the most supporters?

I mean, I know there's other games out there to play now, but GW still by far has the most gamers, and this is a more 40k centric board.

Actually, I really, really like BattleTech. Need to try to find people who play it locally. Of the miniature games I've played, I think it's my favorite. CAV 1.0 (not that dross that was 2.0) was pretty good too.

There are a few games I'm looking at but haven't played yet, but I don't think I'll like any of them more than BattleTech (or CAV 1.0).

Shockingly, I voted 40k.

Although I'm a fanboy, I almost never play, because like 10 people within 50 miles of me play. 5 of which are very close friends.

Most people around here (50+ ) play warmahordes.

Giving that game a spin next Thursday with a press ganger.

That being said, I love 40k

Great fluff
Great model range
Decent rules (although /I'm sick of the same fething rules every reprint, its like pop music its always the same tone, with a slightly different pitch)

For converting, painting and writing fluff: 40k
For actually playing the game: Warmachine

For all of the above: Mordheim. One of GW's best games. Especially when played as an ongoing campaign. And the rules are available for free!

A fast-playing, warband skirmish, fantasy wargame. I keep coming back to this game because it rewards those with wide and varying tastes in fantasy miniatures.

I can be at a convention and buy a random bag of vintage miniatures, or at the FLGS and pick up some figs from whatever brand-new miniature line that catches my eye. When I get home, I know I'll be able to paint them, stat them up and get them playing on the table with my gaming buddies. No matter how odd or different the miniature, I know it will be playable in SBH and that's something pretty special. I've used the warband creator to make warbands around themes as varied as wild animals, elves, human knights, ogres, sentient animals, etc, and they all work seamlessly in the SBH rules.

Lastly, it's also supported by a range of supplements, so even though the game at first appears simple to learn, it offers options for dungeon crawls, campaigns, and different settings.

As for the "big" games, 40k is a game that I come back to occasionally. I like the figs, I like the fluff, and, there's something wonderfully ridiculous about grimdark-sci-fantasy battles that cram 4 armor-reinforced platoons onto a battle field the size of a couple of soccer pitches.

Kings of War, my whole group is playing it now, after the disaster that is WHFB8. Huge games that take no time to play and are very rewarding tactically.

Fav game = 40k

1. I like the GW ork models and universe. I collect Orks and with all the 3rd party models, and awesome old Armorcast/epicast stuff, I have a collection.
2. Very active and well-run organized play in the form of Indy events, mega battles and so on. It makes it easy for me to see what is 'happening' soon, then blocking out a day or weekend to go play with my toys.
3. As bad as the rules are, they do work as a way to allow me to play with my toys which I enjoy. I have specific models who are over a decade long who have all sorts of stories attached to them.

Apart from that, I enjoy Bloodbowl, SDE and other games where I can sit down and just play a board game without having to spend hours hovering over terrain.

I also collect 'one-off' fantasy models which look fun to paint and keep a 'trunk of monsters' for RPG games. I like to give DMs a wide array of resources to use as lots of RPGers don't seem to do mini painting. So I just keep a warchest of heroes and monsters for groups I play with.

If I like the models and the game is fun, I usually am open to playing the game.

I would like to point out that these forums have traditionally been GW-centric so a poll here may not reflect the larger community -especially since most other games have their own individual forums. Dakka is rather impressive in how it has become a gathering place for gamers with eclectic tastes however.

This is an awesome forum. 40k dominated as Dais says, but I think many 40k players are prone to try other alternatives sooner and later and also mentioned is the increasing variety of games played among dakka people.

I was strictly limited to Games Workshop games for more than a decade, which had variety in its own like all the spin-off skirmish games. I really enjoyed that. But my impression is that Warmachine & Hordes profit from alot of players tired of Fantasy and 40k. I like Warmahordes for it's specific contrasts to Warhammer:

-less unit options. To be able to field a 10-man unit of Marines, you would easily need 15-25 models for variety. Special weapons, jump packs, sergeant upgrades for both hands and other equipment. A 10-man unit will only ever be 10 models in Warmahordes. Only option is typically a unit attachment of 2 models and possibly 1 or 2 weapon attachments. Only very few warjacks require magnetizing or multiple models because of individual weapon options. I am so tired of magnetezing, keeping spare parts and painting multiple models that fill the same slot in a unit.
-less models. So boring painting unit after unit of the same or very similar stuff. Warmahordes usually rewards lists with high variety of choices. 40k in my experience rewards spamming. Less models gives each single model more important on the battlefield.
-40k temps players to use proxies because of the insane amount of options variety. Warmahordes is much less tempting.
-adding one fundamentally important piece could consist of 1 solo or warbeast in Warmahordes. In 40k even a full unit of 20 models would not change the army in the same way.
-basicly just a smaller game board size and amount of models, but even more tactics and synergies.
-you could field almost a complete faction in Battlefoam Privateer Press bag, a complete 40k army would need 3-4 times as much space with all the options and variety included.

It's going to be a while before I will take 40k down from the shelf.

I play a stupid amount of different games, but Blood Bowl tops them all.

I started with clicky games (Heroclix, Mechwarrior, Mage Knight) before I graduated to Warmachine, and Hordes after it was released. Then 40k, Pulp City Heroes, and Battletech. Now I'm starting Infinity, WHFB, Malifaux, Arkham City, Shadowrun Sprawl Gangers, and Mordheim.

Still, the roar of the crowd as they tear apart some poor human blitzer that got a little to close to the sideline still gets my hair up. It's best played in league, but unfortunately we just don't have enough committed and mature players down here to keep a league together.

ALWAYS ANGRY! ALL THE TIME!

I voted for Warhammer 40,000

Why?

Good question really.

Perhaps because 40k is a lot more widespread than other games.

Maybe I can't stomach buying models & rulebooks for other games that are more deserving because there is a good chance they won't see use.

And lastly because I was essentially raised on Warhammer 40,00.

It's a great game but of course there are other games that are just as great.

It may not be very big, but I really like West Wind's Empire of the Dead game. I had a go at it at York wargames show, and I even got a free mini too ^_^

Imperial guard: Because quantity has a quality of it's own.

Sisters of Battle can be used in any game, with the exception of chess, Monopoly and of course, Warhammer 40,000.

After 8 editions, you might have thought that GW could get fantasy right.
