Collecting, painting and of course playing.
But not to win but to have fun, aldo I love when I win against good player.

Killing Draigo. There is nothing more satisfying in life than watching him fail one last save against a laspistol.

More generally, I do rather enjoy painting and modelling, and I don't think I'm alone, as almost everyone in my group has a fully painted army, only exception is a Tyranid player with over 200 gaunts that he's somewhat intimidated by in regards to painting, and a Chaos player who's attention span isn't long enough to get much done, especially when he's got 17k points of them.

I'm also very fond of close-fought games. It's very satisfying seeing a big game reduced to a handful of units, trying to grab just enough victory points to seize the day. I find those particularly good against Tyranid tervigon lists; they create awesome valiant last stands against waves of gaunts.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

For me, I like the modelling aspect. I also like close-fought games with lots of moments where things could go either way. Hence one of the reasons I play Sisters - win or lose, almost everyone on the field is going to be dead by the end of the game.

I like the close fought games the most. The ones that easily could have gone either way.

Second to that would be what me and my friend call the "style points" games. We make up lists using units that are usually left behind, or that have funny rules, or weird combinations of units and run around trying to beat the tar out of each other's "armies". Last game we had, our defilers had a crab battle and ended up blowing each other up, and my cultists found a sabotaged objective that blew up and killed half the squad.

My third favorite thing is completing another painted model. I really dislike painting in general, but I love having a fully painted army on the table, so every model that I manage to complete feels great.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

These days it's all about playing doubles games for me just for the enjoyment of playing alongside and against people at the same time. I've always been one for working alongside people and playing 1:1 games of 40k doesn't really appeal to me. The other bonus of 40k Doubles (esp. official tournaments at Warhammer World in Nottingham) is that I don't need to collect and paint a large army - I like operating small forces and to date I've not actually finished an army. Closest would be my Wood Elves but I'm determined to build and paint 750pts of Death Korp for Doubles games. Winning and losing are no longer priorities, enjoying the company of the people I'm playing the game with is now the most important thing for me.

Killing stuff, pulling off risky moves, and watching statistics implode with certain dice rolls.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

A close game win or lose is the best. Just stomping someone or tabling them is not really much fun, it means something went horribly wrong for my opponent rather than I did anything outstanding.

An exception that makes the rule is destroying an army played by someone that is cheating or trying to cheat.

For me it's a culmination of things. I love modeling, I'm meh about painting (I have ADHD and painting doesn't hold my attention like modeling for some reason, so I'm slow at it), and I love playing.

But there are two distinct "This is why I play this game, this is what it's all about" moments for me.
The first is right before you start your first turn. You're looking over the battlefield, about to play the game. You see your army, and your opponent's, and you see the fruits of your time and effort (and money, but let's not go there). Seeing the heraldry of my army, experiencing the pre game jitters/excitement. Wondering at all the possibilities the coming game may hold. Seeing my army set up on the table, modeled, painted, and ready for action gets me every time.
The second moment comes after the game. After a good game. And to me, win or lose, you can still have a good game. You laugh off failing all 5 termy saves. You boggle at the last surviving guy falling back who manages snap shooting down a flier. Good or bad luck is not as important as the enjoyment. After all that, there comes another moment. When you are discussing the game with your opponents/spectators. It could be while packing up, or a week after the game. It could be something as simple as "oh man, remember the part where..." and it will hit me. Like a second wave of euphoria. I just had a great time, and the after experience reaffirms that. Maybe at the bottom of turn four, I might forget I'm having fun when my land raider immobilizes itself on a tiny patch of stones. But looking back on the game as a whole, I can clearly reflect, and I realize that despite bad luck, or superior tactics from my opponent, or cheese in their list, or the other hundreds of small annoyances people tend to get hung up on, I had fun! Sometimes you get a bad opponent, a poor sport, but I just try to not play with those people. Heck I even have fun with most of our local WAAC players because they are still cool/nice guys, I'll be it a bit more competitive. At the end of the day, I had fun, and that's all that matters.

There are lots of other little things I enjoy; Opening a new model and checking it out on the sprue, putting the last piece in place, placing it on my shelf for display with my other models, answering questions about how I painted model X or how I magnetized all my tank options, hearing people cheer when my opponent or I pull off a crazy play. To me these are lead ups to the two big moments. Those two moments where it all comes together. It's almost like a regular occurring epiphany. These are the moments that keep my paying/modeling/painting/playing, coming back to the forums, reading and rereading the rules/fluff. The moments that make me think "it was all worth it".

Well for me any way, that's what it's all about. Sorry for the wall of text.

You, sir, have opened my eyes.
It also reminds me of when I held Typhus off with Yarrick, took off all of his wounds except for one and he killed himself because he rolled a 1 for his daemon weapon. Great times were had. Along with my HWT that got slaughtered by terminators except for my lascannon guy who proceeded to miss every shot for the rest of the game and the one time he did hit he rolls a one, but it was still great to watch and remember.

I enjoy hanging out with people, and I have more fun when my opponent and I have some bad rolls and lose some important unit to a freakishly bad roll, like out of nowhere. We both just laugh those off.

I enjoy the closer games, with a good scenario behind them. We are trying to blend some different game objectives into our battles, instead of purely from the rulebook, just to mix things up. Things like Hunt the Fallen for my DA, and a game against Necrons who have a portal to bring in reinforcements that we have to destroy.

For me it's a few things. First in no particular order is taking out my opponents favorite model, even if I lose I love making the person squirm. Second I enjoy modelling and painting as a hobby to keep my hands busy, even if I get burnt out I still enjoy painting again eventually. Third is just getting out of the house and socializing with othe people. As you get older making new friends gets weird, this gives me an easy outlet to accomplish that. I also like the competition win lose or draw. I really like the feeling of hopelessness and moral ambiguity of the fluff. And lastly this is going to sound weird , but the money spent on the hobby. I have a budget and typically have extra money, so instead of drinking or doing drugs I buy and assemble/paint little plastic, metal, or resin figures and that keeps me on the straight and narrow.

I enjoy trying out non standard lists or units that dont get used much.
Sometimes its nice to just plonk a few "non optimal" units down and go at it.
Always throws up a laugh or something new.

And with the release of new codices, it gives some fun options.

True, most (if not all) games, and life, usually have those moments that I would like to think are the highlights of each year that goes by. That's why I like to play these games and share these moments with the people I'm with (either with strangers or friends) and have fun while doing so.
