Yeah, we should find a way to turn this into a gun thread.
Well at least that subject has some impact on the US's society, which is where the majority of Dakka's posters are from although I tend to find those gun threads boring as well but for some reason I've been more invested in them recently.
We are very sorry about posting about things happening outside of the continent of North America. We are aware some of you still believe you are the only slab of land on this flat square of a world.

It has nothing to do with posting about things outside of North America, my complaint is about how talking about North Korea isn't very interesting unless something actually drastic happens rather than the usual comments about how big of a joke North Korea or how horrible it is to live

Kim-Jong Un is a far smarter man than he is given credit for in the US media. He gets more respect elsewhere.
Besides lot of the current round of bile looks like its going to backfire The US has tried to muscle on him for a while now, and tried to get China to rein them in also, and clearly the North Koreans don't give a rodents rectum, and China have sat back and smirked. Then the North Koreans have made vacuous counter threats that have provoked Washington into make various cease and desist warnings that the North Korean government laughs off, while other countries have been invaded for less, and now suddenly all these fat jokes turn up.
It's looking like 'if we cant bully him poke fun at him', and it looks petty and juvenile. Kim-Jong Un is here to stay and he is stable enough not to try to nuke America.

Of course his big threat to launch a rocket in early April. Did you see how awesome it was? Oh wait, nothing happened...
he did manage to tiuck off South Korea and lse a major source of cash income from the combined plant/camp thing. That hasn't restarted. Smooth move jackass.

If he's so smart, why is his country still so poor and why did he shut down one of the only sources of hard currency in the country?

Smooth move indeed, the last thing North Korea actually wants is joint programs with South Korea, no matter the gains. His regime requires isolation to work, South Korean workers quietly telling North Korean workers that the grass really is so much greener wont help the regime.
The preferred partner is China for all ventures.
If he's so smart, why is his country still so poor and why did he shut down one of the only sources of hard currency in the country?
Kim Jong Un is not personally responsible for the poverty of North Korea, blame is ancestors for that. From all accounts he is trying to move forward and is making progress, but will only make controlled moves lest control be lost.
The incumbent 'Glorious Leader' is playing a clever hand, its profiting him, his regime and China. He will move forwards for the people as and when it doesn't conflict with any of those.
Don't pretend the West cares about the North Koreans, there are other places just as bad, Zimbabwe for instance, yet the West is doing precious little to help the people or remove the Mugabe regime; and unlike North Korea the Chinese won't care to make any moves if ever we did, so nothing is stopping us but apathy and a lack of oil.

1. Then maybe they should have made moves that they were going to shoot one off. Now they just look stupid.
2.. NK needs hard currency. This is a major loss for them.
3. I don't pretend the West cares. I'm fine if the Space Klowns come and they disappear utterly from the earth.
Its not profiting him. He's lost hard currency generators. His standing has fallen, his great host is making statements that have caused him to lose face, and he hasn't shaken the tightened embargo. At this point he might not even be in charge.

Actually the US is looking stupid. Threats were made of strict censure and have come to nothing.
Saddam Hussein had WMD, complied and got rid of them then was invaded on the rumour of having more.
Kim Jung Il when questioned about his nukes during the Dubya years said he was making some, and when the US threatened action over it promised to build rockets too. More threats occurred, Kim Jong Un kept with the program and launched the rockets anyway.
What is the US doing is essentially saying, "Mr Kim Jong Un, you are very naughty for launching long range rockets capable of reaching the US while possessing nuclear weapons, if you don't stop your program we might call you naughty again."
The message is loud and clear, especially when held in comparison to the US's track record of comparable threats and developments - China holds the balance of power in the region, not the US.
While China is the puppetmaster the North Korean government also profits. Their real problem is not the hunger or the rhetoric but threat of enticement to revolt amongst the brainwashed populace, as always this is the real threat to Communism. A hostile White House is not a threat, in fact its an external enemy which helps the regime, any comment of censure Washington makes only gives ammo to the regime to point out the foreign capitalist boogeyman.
North Korea wants to introduce mobile phones next year, social media is a major security problem for centralised regimes, but deals can be made. The true threat to the Communist party is infiltration by media, not threats. The US cant afford an invasion but can afford to subvert the North Koreans by pointing out how gak life is there and making mealy mouthed promises of how much better things would be if there was a civil war.
Remember Bay of Pigs? After that Kruschev put nukes on Cuba, the US had a hissy fit and they were withdrawn. At face value the Soviets backed down, but the quiet concessions for doing so tell a different story. First was the complete removal of nuclear missile bases from Turkey (which had given the US identical launch characteristics to Russia that Cuba did to the US east coast) and more relevant as total cessation of activities to remove the revolutionary regime, which was why Cubas needed armed support to begin with. Up until the Cuban Missile crisis the US tried media incursion and military incursion to rid Cuba of communism, after the deal between Kennedy and Kruschev this stopped cold, and never restarted. To the US lasting credit they kept their side of the bargain even after the fall of the Soviet Union. Cuba still has communism, and still has Castro after a fashion.
I think that Kim Jong Un is holding out for the big payoff, something similar to what Cuba has. A promise of no intervention direct or indirect. Seoul wont like this but China is the big dog there and Kim Jong Un has played a brinkmanship game with timing and gravitas and big balls allowing for what he is up against. He has every chance of getting what he wants.
As for his domestic record, life in parts of North Korea are improving, there is a long way to go especially in rural areas but Pyongyang is nowhere near as backward as it was when Kim Jong Un took over, the regime is trying genuine attempts at infrastructure development under government auspice. Key to this are large scale building projects, long understood as one of the few areas in which a centralised authoritarian government is actually an economic benefit compared to the free market model. Kim Jong Il liked to issue vacuous claims that he invented pretty much everything. Kim Jong Un is considerably more practical, instead he is securing his legacy by building things for real instead and frankly the projects are innovative, imaginative and workable. It's a solid policy, from the point of view of working with the material available to him.
Don't underestimate this clever and capable man, he is not the podgy little idiot some people prefer to make him out to be.

The US didn't so much keep their side of the bargain as it stopped caring about Cuba, outside of Presidential politics anyway. After all, lots of the many Cubans living in Florida have a generational distaste for the Castro regime.
I think that Kim Jong Un is holding out for the big payoff, something similar to what Cuba has. A promise of no intervention direct or indirect.
I think Kim Jong Un is more concerned with domestic political matters than he is with international ones as the no longer such a thing as promise of no indirect intervention.
Hell, indirect intervention has already started.
