Olaf Shieldbreaker wrote:I got a lore question for you guys. From what I understand, space marines usually have their pre-Astartes memory completely wiped, but then you have stuff like the James Swollow Blood Angels novel, where Rafen and Arkio are brother and remember that their brothers. Shouldn't they no know they are brothers if they got a memory wipe?
I ask because I'm a writing a Space Wolf story and it talks about his pre-Astartes life. How much of that would he remember?
Mindwiping usually only occurs when neccesary, as it can remove experiences from which the person learned. Many SM's are taken from hostile environments, because it would have trained their minds and bodies to survive better, and as such, mindwiping would not be beneficial.
It can occur, however, that a marine simply forgets his past, buried under decades or centuries of war.

They were plainly obvious just from reading the lore as GW presented it, and I saw them the first time I read through the lore.

Thanks for the PM Melissia. I think you're reading too much into it, and from a biological aspect it makes sense to begin enhancing a body before puberty has done it for you.

Even if you hold hat stance, you still have to admit that the terminology they used for the process is still disturbing.
They could have used any number of things. But they used THOSE terms instead.

GW doesn't really think too hard on its fluff decisions.
What was the terminology exactly? Could you PM it to me please?

I'm interested in learning about these "pederastic undertones" as well. I have never heard of such a thing within the confines of the 40k fluff.

You do have to put 2 and 2 together.
The various chapters, which are made up of old men, go and find prepubescent young boys and through a vigorous regime of mental and physical conditioning turn them into more Space Marines. The highlight of which is the insertion of the chapter's Geneseed into these recruits.
While it is there if you look for it, it don't think there is any sinister motivation. Its no more pederastic due to the wording than wrestling is homoerotic in and of itself because it used to be such to the Greeks.

If that really is what is being talked about, I don't see how that is in any way pederastic. Pederasty heavily emphasizes the homoerotic nature of the relationship, which is not at all present in Space Marine conditioning. Geneseed isn't any kind of reproductive fluid, it's the genetic material that contains the components that allow for the production of the inhuman organs contained in Space Marines. There is no eroticism involved in Space Marine creation, so how can it be compared to pederasty? I don't get where that is coming from, at all. Seems a bit of a stretch.

I know.
Although Geneseed is reproductive in nature. A single progenoid is used to make a marine, who in turn makes 2 new progenoids. So yes it is reproductive in nature. Its not a fluid or similar to any sort of normal reproduction, but it could be seen as a "suggestive medium".
In universe it is certainly NOT pederasty. Nor do I think its deliberate. I do think you could definitely see it, but only if you are trying to.

If Graham McNeill is writing it, it is certainly homoerotic. Everything he writes is.

Because true SPESS MUHREENS are BLUHD REHVENS! And their only tactic is STEHL REHN!
Furthermore, they are led by Indrick Baldeale, the most incompetent SPESS MUHREEN in the BLUHD REHVENS ever to use STEHL REHN!
And now you know.
