How do people feel about including an aegis defense line in a 1k points list?

Belial

Deathwing Squad x5
Deathwing Squad x5 - CML
Deathwing Squad x5 - CML

Aegis Defense Line - Quad gun

I would have to drop the standard and a plasma cannon, but in return Belial could take his TH/SS and also make better use of his precision shots skill with the quad gun.
The missile launchers could be swapped for AC's, freeing up enough points to give the third squad a heavy flamer.

If you need AA, the Angels have some other options, one of which (I think) can be loaded in CMLs.

Parking Belial behind an Aegis is a tempting target for deep strike.

I would drop a couple Tac Termis in behind the Aegis, claim Slay the Warlord, destroy the quad gun for the kill points, then spend the rest of the game sniping at your other Terminators from behind the defense line.

With so few models, and so many points tied up in each, you really need to have them out on the board where they can wreck stuff and make their points back.

Depending on what mission you are playing, you will also need all the mobile units you can get, to claim or deny objectives.

The dice are not your friends

Sorry there's a few things I disagree with in your post.

OT
The Quad gun doesn't give victory points, as its a piece of terrain. It can be used by both players, and can be destroyed by both players. If this wasn't the case I could kill it first turn for a free VP.

DA anti air is very limited. It has Flakk devastators, but they cost a lot and don't keep in with the Deathwing theme. They also have the Nephilim Fighter, about which the least said the better. There are no AA CML's in the codex, you could take one on a contemptor mortis from IA.

On-topic
However in this case I'm not looking for AA. I want something to support my termies and act as a force multiplier. Aegis does this through providing a 4+ cover save, and also gives Belial something to do in the shooting phase, furthermore making his precision USR much more useful. Will it make the army less mobile, certainly. And you are right this could be a problem. But DW forces are not going to be holding many objectives anyway.

The real question is, will an aegis line make better use of my points than another similarly costed force multiplier (Deathwing/Fortitude standard, or a Librarian)

As for threats from deepstrike, TBH Belial with a squad of terminators has to be one of the hardest quad gun crews out there, I would take my chances.

Fortitude or Librarian will serve you MUCH better than an aegis at 1000 points. Cutting your losses by a third is fantastic (as I've recently learned) in an army that can't afford losses. As for the librarian, I recommend some divination and telepathy. Both primaris are good if you don't like your roll.

An aegis will just force you to keep your termies static.

Glad the banner worked out for you, I'd certainly rate it more useful than the Deathwing standard.

I think I'll try the quad gun in friendly games, but leave it out of more serious ones.

List three for sure CML gives you options which is crucial with such a small elite army. Feel no pain is needed too and don't bother spending too many points in the hq as you are tight on points as it is.
