That's a little insane. I would advise people not to work at that McDonalds, or anywhere that won't pay you direct deposit into your checking account.

Also, Chase Bank is worse than Bank of America, and that's saying something.

This is very shady, indeed. And it's certainly atypical of a legitimate business. Almost like not having a Tax ID or something.

Y'know, I have had my card for over a year and a half, and i have never had to pay a fee other then an over draw fee. But then again I dont have to pay fees if I use my card 10 times a month.

Yes!!! You can Pay to Save!

Also, are you talking about a Bank issued Debit Card connected to your Checking Account with said bank? That's not what we are talking about in this thread.

I rarely get fees on my account because I know how to watch my money... But as soon as I over draft my account by $0.01... I immediately accrue a $37.50 fine, even though I have overdraft protection turned off (which means that if I don't have enough money in my account the card gets decline).

The problem you're not considering is that instead of a paycheck these people are getting assessed fees for basically accessing money that is rightfully theirs.

I've been contemplating jumping to Navy Fed for banking. Might do that when I get closer to retiring and I'm looking at getting a mortgage. But yeah, I'll be with USAA till I die when it comes to insurance.

It is a new practice and many corporations are doing this (including the one I work for!).

Over here, where I doubt there's a company in the country that's paid by cheque since the early 1990s, none of that really clears anything up.

I mean, I understand how things work over there, I just don't really understand why.

Or corporate was using this McDonalds as a test case, for what might have been policy rolled out at all their stores.

Why would that be surprising? Or appalling?

Is there some evil about franchising that I don't know about.

Navy Fed is one of the best credit unions on the planet. I opened an account right after boot but kept the Pacific Marine account they open for you as well. So far I've used Navy Fed for all my loans and other financial needs, other places really can't compare in service and rates. After being thrashed by wells fargo, I'm never going to a bank ever again. (We need an orkmoticon with dollar signs in his eyes)

It looks like the NY AG is looking into the practice of requiring employees to accept pay in the form of fee-laden debit cards.

It also looks like that McDonalds in the OP now offers alternate payment methods.

ACtually, NY law forbids employers from requiring employees to use the pre-paid cards. What they're investigating is if workers were coerced into using them. Which of course they were, but good luck proving it.

I don't know for a fact, but I'm pretty nearly all states require wages be paid by cash or check. You do not mess with wages.

It's just... this is the electronic age. You can just have direct debit in to a bank account of the employees choosing. It shouldn't be hard.

I mean, I don't know if there's been a company in Australia paying employees with cash or cheque since the mid-90s. At my last place of employ I learned that vendors that weren't on a special list were still paid by cheque, and I said we had to change that, and while people agreed, pointing out the cost of the cheques had been calculated and we really need to move, I said no, forget the cost, it's just plain embarrassing to being paying suppliers by cheque. And that was suppliers we used rarely, for minor stuff. Not employees.

Seriously, your country has some of the most amazing tech conceivable. Wall St trades are measured in hundredths of a second. Why is banking 20 years behind?

You'd think it would be preferable.

You don't have to deal with physical cash or checks which would reduce your overhead costs.

Only a smaller business, or one with relatively few employees, should be dealing is cash or checks for payroll.

Even then, ultimately the only reason I can think of is a small company that receives its income primarily in cash, and prefers to pay some employees in cash so both the employer and the employee can hide income from the tax man.
