Brets can be devastating, even if they don't break steadfast. Just a six-man knight unit with three characters up front kitted out correctly simply wont give away combat resolution to most units, and still have enough to win combat every round.

This assumes two characters with 1+ rerollable armor on the front corners, a challenge lord in the middle, full command, and one character is the bsb. Ranks and banners give you +4 right off the bat, and you are likely going to do at least a few wounds even if you didn't charge, meanwhile, they will do one or two if they are lucky.

Even if you never break the unit, challenge lord kills all the characters for victory points.

I thought about doing a Wolf Rider army just because it would be awesome looking. It would probably be pretty damn terrible, but would be fun.

Uhm...that unit is extremely expensive and will get easily destroyed by any ranged attacks. If I was against such a unit, I'd let both of my Doom Divers fire into it and in a single turn, the entire unit is destroyed or crippled enough to be taken out of the game. Even in melee, they don't stand a chance against any tarpit in the game as they lack the damage output to remove Steadfast and on top of that, they are easily twice or thrice as expensive as such a tarpit.

Realistically it wouldn't start the game as 6+characters, a more common number from what I see is 12+characters. Furthermore, superior mobility gives them a higher likelihood of choosing who they fight rather than the other way around.

The goal in calling out this unit wasn't to say it couldn't be countered, in fact, as you just stated, tarpits (with general/bsb in another unit nearby) and warmachines fit the bill nicely. Against a more elite unit with one or more characters it is quite powerful. Naturally in the hands of an unskilled player who does not utilize the rest of his army well it won't shine, but that's true for nearly anything.

At the moment I vote HE for best all cav army.

2+ save, LD8, M9, S5 and ASF rerolls in subsequent rounds.

And our heroes got a bunch cheaper, mundane 2+ noble is like less than 100pts. Princes went down in price too, and with fast cav in core AND dragon princes, I think they're in a really good place.

HElf cav is nice since the riders fight in three ranks, you can run three-deep blocks and not lose out on the attacks that count.

Their weakness is durability. A 2+ save is nice, but the model is T3 and expensive point-wise.

Anyways, Shamgi, are you opposed to chariots?

Not in any specific sense, I'm mostly just interested in a fast moving, hard hitting army in general.

Aesthetic wise, my first choice would be a Black Orc army, I can't do a list purely of them. Or Wood Elves, but well, Wood Elves. Maybe after they get a new army book.

Well, right off the back, if you're making an all cavalry list you shouldn't be that concerned with being extremely competitive anyway. I'm not saying all calv is bad, just that it's not a WAAC type of list in this edition.

Anyway, I would recommend either Brets or Empire, leaning towards Empire as that's my army and I have more experience with them (Though Bretonnia is my favorite in the game.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Bretons get rank bonuses from their lance formation? I think they do (It'd be in the FAQ and I'm too lazy to look it up atm) but if so that makes them really strong. Their weakness compared to Empire is the fact that they don't have monstrous Calv (Demigryphs) they don't have a 1+ Armor save they don't have as strong of magic and they don't have the Steam Tank, which is just awesome and works well in a mounted list.

So at the end of the day, I'd go with whichever you prefer, there are times I wish I made a Bretonnian army instead of Empire because they are so cool loking, but at the same time Empire has some great fluff with the Knightly Orders and I feel like, overall, they are a better army at the moment.

Bretonnia gets a rank bonus for each rank in a lance.
