I fully agree that it's fun to field, but think of it more as adding a bit of seasoning. I gave up playing competitively years ago, to be honest, and sometimes you just want to field things for the giggles, like a defiler with a pair of havoc launchers and an extra dccw (legal loadout, unless errata'd away), or, as mentioned in my opening post, a warpsmith or apostle on a daemonic steed (which, while not entirely badass, comes pretty close to that level, and opens up a few more options for these otherwise near-useless units...). It's not about competitiveness, it's about flavor.
I totally agree on the competition/fun thing. I have more fun in a losing game where certain units did miraculous things than in a perfect win. My favorite of all time is the one remaining basic cultist, no autogun, no marks, just an autopistol and a ccw. His champion dead, his brothers all dead. And he rolled a 1 1 on his morale test. He doesn't give up, just runs up to the nearest terminator, and fires his one shot. ...and shoots the invincible warrior right through his eye. It is moments like that that make it fun.
But more on point, special units made for really cool kitbashes and conversions also make for great stories and games. Like a friend of mine who decided to kitbash his venerable dreadnought into a Chaplain. Nothing too special, right? Well how about the Chaos side? A freakin Dark Apostle Helbrute! I mean, Apostles are already crazed, don't you think?
What cool non-codex units have other people fielded, maybe once or twice for fun?

this is a 40k thing not a CSM thing. DA get screwed the same way.
Pistols are just that awesome thinks GW.
DE can have a blaster, or a blast pistol for 15 points
one is 6" range the other is 18" range. Automatically Appended Next Post: Isengard wrote: Shadowbrand wrote:A gretchen turned my Raptor Champ into a Daemon Prince...
Yeah. Call me mad but as much as I like this new dex I do miss a few things from the previous one.
Like how Daemon Princes were done. I now -have- to give one a mark. I could rune a Unmarked prince with Warptime and wings for about 150pts. Infiltrating Chosen? Ohhmuhgurd. I still have a unit of guys with the Night Lords bitz. And most of all the old Daemon Weapons. I like how each god got one. Tzeench had a funky wizard gun. Slannesh had the blissgiver and Khorne had this badass 2d6 extra attacks power weapon.
Don't get me wrong though. This current book is amazing. I just look back fondly on a codex most people hated more then Justin Bieber.
I suspect that in the longer term there will be codex supplements to cover the Legions more fully and there you will get some specialist god-specific weaponry.
What I want to know is why, if the warp is the source of all psyker powers, are the chaos psychic disciplines so narrow and uninspiring? I assume it's for game balance???
Kelly just rushed it

Looking at the rumors for SM Kelly had all the tools to make our codec awesome or at least flavorable but he not only dropped the ball, he fumbled it back into his own endzone. But it seems we cannot be allowed to be anything other than stomped by SM.
...
Head scratching items: few and non-aligned daemon weapons, no grenades on pure assault units, no land raider variant and the thing got MORE expensive.

Didn't Kelly say that he designed it to be on par with the SM codex? The 5th ed SM codex, that is. I guess it makes sense - SM players would be pissed if CSM got a better codex than them, even if said codex is a full edition older. SM make up the majority of players and you wouldn't want to piss off most of your customers.
Here's hoping the 7th ed SM codex comes out before the 7th ed CSM codex. If CSM are always going to be balanced against last edition's SM they will forever be behind the 8 ball.

So, running the points/stats for our useless little buddies, we get the following:
Warpsmith
MoK/Jugg
Black Mace
Combat Familiar
Combimelta
Sigil
Boon
260 points, if my math is right, giving us the following:
WS4 BS5 S4 T5 W3 A5 Sv2+/4++
With cavalry, counterattack, meltagun, flamer, 7 swings on the black mace on the charge, and some truly tasty possibilities on the gifts table... I dunno, maybe trim a few points back, but that seems like it could hit like a sack of bricks.

I'm a new 40k player and started out with CSM 6th Edition.
It's a bit sad how many things in the codex are just broken enough to make it foolish to field them.
- Defiler sabotaged by cost and ordnance rules versus weapons load out.
- Mutilators too slow to march, standing around uselessly after shocking.
- Helbrute having no decent way to get across the table and sucking in shoot mode.
- Land Raider being gimped and overpriced and no more accurate shocking leaves terminator units stuck on the home side of the board.
Not to mention the load of 'meh' units: chosen, possessed, thousand sons.
Ah well, I understand it's been much worse in pervious editions with much slower publishing cycles.
