Can Tau take on land raiders?
Yes, they will mop up my rather unbalanced Space Wolves with ease.
Draw.
No, it'll be like taking candy away from a baby for the Space Wolves.

You can't flatout after moving and disembarking as you did on turn 1. Check pg. 79.

A good back and forth fight so far. His BSides have been shooting above average, but your Jaws have been above average thus far as well. Losing that TFC turn 1 was huge. As it stands, your remaining TFC is decimating his infantry. 2 of them would leave him with no troops at all in a matter of turns.

Interesting, he went for the Helios rather than 1 of the Achilles - is this because he didn't have LOS to either one?

You are right about the flat-out move. My bad.

Yeah, Adam's dice has been pretty good so far. As you can tell, he's been rolling high, even for his Initiative tests. Lol.

That was a lot of 6's! Denied 3 turns in a row, and killing the LR w/ Railsides!

Well played by both sides

OK

Wow I would be so tempted to flip the table after that game. Eh, after all this is a dice game.

I'm not quite sure why. Possibly because he was more concerned about its whirlwind launcher. Possibly because he probably thought it would be easier to take out.

Thanks!

I have 1 in the pipeline....pure Draigowing versus Eldar! Coming maybe next week.

Yeah, he did better than I thought and he certainly rolled better than I expected.

Yup...this game just wasn't meant to be, at least not for me.

It wasn't my most frustrating game, but it was definitely a great game and big win for my opponent.

You mention you are surprised that tau struggled against waveserpents but did so well against landraiders but if you think about it it makes sense. A riptide shooting at either vehicle is going to need a 6 to do any damage. After that 6 a riptide needs a 3+ to do any damage to a LR (on the rend roll) a riptide against a WS needs a 4+ to get passed the jink. So just in normal shooting, out in the open a LR is only .16 chance less likely to get damaged. But the big difference is that eldar was able to eliminate tau's pathfinders faster and were presenting two wraithknights as major threats to take some of the heat away from the WS.

I still think tau's list needs a lot of tweaking, all these spam heavy matchups show where its weaknesses are.

jy2 - your army list is not balanced so it can be more greatly affected by unkind dice. Probably two land raiders would have been sufficient. It was an entertaining batrep.

Good observation. The chances of riptides hurting LR's is actually less than that if you take into account failed nova-charges. Approximately 1 in 3 riptides would fail to novacharge (though that principle doesn't apply in this game ) and thus won't be able to hurt the LR. However, a riptide that fails his novacharge can still hurt the wave serpent. With TFC's, the space wolves were eliminating pathfinders even faster than the wave serpents. At least they still got their armor saves against the serpent shields, but they get no saves against the TFC's.

Not only can his list can use some tweaking, but his tactics can use some tweaking as well. But IMO it doesn't require much tweaking and to be fair, this was his very first game using those broadsides. I can't imagine how much better his army would be if he starting using missile-sides instead.

You're right. It is a gimmicky list designed to either screw with the opponent if he doesn't have the tools to deal with it or to fold if he does. Even I don't really take it seriously and probably won't take it to any of the major tournaments (for those, I usually prefer to take more balanced lists). But it's fun once in a while to play something that is unconventional.

On another note, you said that the rune priest has a 50% chance of killing a riptide with jaws, its actually slightly lower when you consider the priest has a .916 chance of casting jaws, the riptide has a .833 chance of not denying the witch and then a .50 chance of dying. So Jaws is only a .38 chance of killing the riptide, still a huge chance but the odds are in the riptides favor and if the riptide does live I don't see the priest and 5 grey hunters living.

I think these calculations are not quite correct. Jaws is the following if i'm not mistaken :
0.916 chance of casting
0.833 chance to deny
then jaws only removes the unit if said unit fails their leadership test. in the case of a riptide, it being 9. however on page 96 of the grey wolf codex. it states "Monstrous creatures may subtract one from their dice roll" - the riptide being an MC of course. So a roll of 10 or below is needed to not be removed - therefore
0.20 chance to be removed

total chance of jaws working is actually very slim!

please do correct me if I'm wrong, I play frequently against a grey wolf player who loves to jaws my face off

You are wrong. Jaws is an Initiative test, of which Riptides are I2. They get -1 for being MC's so basically, they fail on a 4+ (assuming the RP passes his psychic test and it doesn't get denied).

ah, sorry i misread it!
So initiative test after reading a bit more in the BRB. Roll a d6 if the result is equal to or LESS than the models initiative they pass. But due to the riptide being a MC. they can get 1, 2 or 3. Got you. 4+ = fail. so 50% chance after psychic test & deny the witch.
Scarry. time to bring out the 'talisman of arthas moloch' for farsight encalves for 4d6 deny the witch 12" bubble!

thanks for clarification
