Subject: Would you play against an opponent that used different-sized bases?

I have some old termies, and they're on their original bases, so I don't particularly mind. One interesting tactic I saw for a guy with old models was basically to have two bases so he could play official games without confusion. He had his models on the base they came with, then had drilled/bored out the newer bigger bases for terminators etc. so he could just place the fig in it and use it for the tournament on the "proper" base. I thought it was a nifty way to do it, and it also prevented him from potentially damaging his models by rebasing them.
It would work on all the old models, like those on square bases. But I'm tempted to do it myself. Automatically Appended Next Post: *wouldn't

When I first started my Necron army several years ago (using the original metal models from 2nd Edition), I based the Immortals on 40mm bases because they kept toppling over on the 25mm bases (too top heavy). However, not that I'm actually playing my Necrons regularly, I will be rebasing them on 30mm bases. Why? The 30mm bases will be wide enough to keep them stable. The 40mm bases just take up so much space. Sure, there is the argument that using larger bases will mean less models get hit by templates when you have the unit spread out to the maximum 2" coherency. But, look at ten 40mm bases spread out like that. Look at the huge footprint that unit makes on the table. Big units on large bases have a really hard time making use of cover and moving through terrain.

I've had people complain about my Truescale marine army using 40mm bases, even though it was actually disadvantageous for me.
Rule of the day: Try to stick to whatever comes in the box, and you'll give people less reasons to complain.

People might complain about an army of non-GW models.

In my case, my army was composed entirely of GW parts. General rule of thumb: If someone can possibly complain about it, given enough time, someone absolutely will.

Isn't this the big argument that came out of the first Ard Boyz? The guy used blood letters on juggernauts on smaller bases and the guy he played had a salamander army who thought, I can flame more of these guys each turn I shoot but when they got into hth it was over because he could put more attacks into the unit.

Also, if your army is on larger sized bases, blast & large blast templates have a better chance of hitting you as you're more likely to still be within any scatter distance...
