As far as not being able to join units of flyers, technically neither one of them is "a unit of flyers." As the book stipulates that they become MC, I see no reason why they can't join each other.

Fly isn't a unit type, it's a special rule.
Units with fly, are flying units.
Single models are units.
Single models with flying are flying units.
