The brushes are terrible, I needed some new brushes, but only the small drybrush in the set was any good at all... far too chunky for my hands (I hold brushes by the ferrule, so the chunky triangle handle is just annoying and uncomfortable), bristles are too long and don't hold their point. Regiment brush is too large and insane detail brush is too small to be of any use for anything.

I ended up buying a GW standard brush just to have something decent to paint with, they were that bad.

Odd - I picked up two of their brushes a few months ago - and I quite liked them. I got the regiment brush and the insane detail brush (which - is awesomely small, and great for painting eyeballs, and other very tiny details). I don't hold brushes by the ferrule though. They aren't as nice as my Windsor and Newtons, and the detail brush hasn't held up well (I'm hard on my brushes). But for such cheap brushes I don't mind them wearing out relatively quickly - and the regiment brush has held up very well.

I was actually looking to pick up and try out a few more on my next trip to the FLGS. (Namely, the psycho, the monster, and the small drybrush).

Would you recommend the AP dips then? I'm skeptical on the $30 ($23 from online retailer) price tag, but if it's really that better than Minwax for, say, figures that I don't want to look muddy/dirty (I would be using them for Mantic Basileans) then it's worth the price.

I've heard nothing but good things about their brushes and spray primers, I've heard differing things about the paints but they look like it's worth trying at least.

I think at $23 the AP dips are worth it... but not at $30. They are a superior product to Minwax, period. Whether it's a special formulation, or they just add extra ethyl spirits or something, I don't know. I prefer it to Minwax, as it's 'cleaner'. I have better flow control with it versus Minwax as well, as I brush-on (and not physically "dip"), so can apply as little or as much as I want.

Have you tried Daemonic yellow?

I found it gives lousy coverage, even at 6". More Dakka found the same and he's painted more than a few Bad Moon Orks...

Edit ...but as mentioned above, Daemonic Yellow primer is fine with a coat of white primer underneath, while the gunmetal primer needs a black coat underneath.

Nope, actually, and I'm willing to reverse my opinion if it sucks I don't think I have any models that need to be basecoated in yellow, though.

Hmm, the Plate Mail Metal spray worked fine for me - I recently undercoated my Mantic Dwarf army with Plate Mail Metal and it was a nice smooth thin coat. But I have not used the new Gun Metal spray (yellow, gun metal, and purple are the ones I don't own, I believe), so again, that one might be horrible.

Edit - that link - wow! Makes me want to paint a yellow army now though!

I'm not a fan of "special snowflake" spray cans, nor do I care to need to spray from exactly the right distance else have my models fethed up. That's gakky product design. I'd rather use stuff that's a superior product, and cheaper and doesn't need to be a special snowflake. Both Testors Dullcote and Wattyl Estapol fit those criteria.

Are you trying to use the Anti-Shine Spray as a varnish? It's not a varnish/sealer, it's literally just a matte spray to remove any and all shininess from the AP Dip/Minwax (which it's amazing at doing). I still use Testor's Dullcote for a matte/satin varnish if the figure isn't protected by an AP Dip.

@judgedoug... you might well be able to get away with gunmetal without a black primer, it would just be thicker - black plus a thin coat of gunmetal gives a great look. As mentioned by others, AP's gunmetal is an awesome paint. And yellow is notoriously difficult to work with. Of course, everyone needs a yellow army...

Wow. That makes it even more useless to me. FLGS also sell it as a varnish here with no indication that it's anything less than that. (And not maliciously so).

Odd.. I'm sure it offers some degree of protection, as it is a layer of something that's being sprayed onto the model, but I only use it for it's intended purpose: to remove all shininess from an AP Dip/Minwax coating, which it works wonders for. 200+goblins, 200+orcs, 100+greeks can attest to that
