As far as albums every metal head should own. I'd add
Death - symbolic
And Death - individual thought patterns.

Somewhere in the steamy jungles of the south...

Listened to it. Sounded like every other metal band I've ever heard.

~Tim?

(Seriously though, do you have to be a metalhead to hear the differences in sound between metal genres?)

No you don't have to be a metal head to tell the difference but it helps. But to understand the bands importance you do have to be at least into metal. They were pretty progressive in the 90's choosing to forgo long winded guitar riffs for shorter choppier riffs that were extremely catchy with great melody while still being ultra heavy. A lot of bands since have tried to copy the style and sound but haven't been able to, to the quality Death did. Chucks death from brain cancer was one of the things that basically killed off the metal scene that at the time (late. 90's)was thriving in Florida.

If you like a bit of folk in your death metal, then Eluveitie's a good band. Or Ensiferum, though they're more keyboard based and guitar based instead of full-on Caelidh band + metal.

Wintersun is also pretty cool. Their fist album is a bit more traditional melodeath, their latest one is a bit more symphonic.

Insomnium's badass as well.

No...but like it was said, it helps. The amount of genres and sub-genres for metal is almost painful

And then there's bands in between. For example, how do you classify Agalloch?

Or Alcest?

I've stopped trying to classify metal/punk/hardcore because frankly it's so futile nowadays haha. With so many bands employing sound from different genres it has become extremely murky haha. It's gotten to the point of absurdity IMO when you have things like glammetal, and crabcore, and poweviolence, and etc. etc.

I do believe in the big 3 classifications though but even those have become murky with "metalcore" and "punk hardcore" and whatnot. I typically classify suff now as things I like, don't like, and maybe will grow on me.

I've found a lot of stuff I didn't like initially grew on me to the point of being some of my favorites. Like hope conspiracy's "end note" or modern life is war's witness or some of the newer converge albums. Now those are hardcore albums not metal but you get my point.

Also exnoctem nice avatar I missed that at first ;p

I sort of think you do. Because before I was into metal, I always heard my cousin listening to In Flames and thought it was mindless screaming. Then I started off with softer metal like Maiden and worked my way up to stuff like Flames. Now I see it is glorious.

Another question- Is clayman anyone's favorite album? Because it is mine

Good pull on Modern Life Is War, awesome Midwestern hardcore.

Clayman is good, but my personal favorite is Colony followed closely by The Jester Race.
