I used to Listen to In Flames allot about 10 years ago. I got into them about the time Clayman came out. I think the last album I bought of theirs was called Reroute to Remain?
I don't really listen to much metal now, but I've got fond memories of them.
"And if we've learnt anything over the past 1000 mile retreat it's that Russian agriculture is in dire need of mechanisation!"
They're alright! As far as Gothenburg death metal goes though I think At The Gate's Slaughter of the Soul album is better, and Dark Tranquility is overall the best of the three. But the Jester Race album is awesome.
But apart from the opening, it's barely folky at all. Bathory aren't really folk metal in the true sense (or, at least, modern Turisas/Eluveitie/Finntroll sense).
to me viking metal = metal about vikings. So, Amon Amarth and later Bathory are viking metal as far as I'm concerned Even Manowar has some viking metal songs. And Led Zepplin. I guess for me it's more about what the song is about not what the way the band plays.
Fintroll is the only bad I've found who have been able to harness the legendary power of the kazoo effectively.
Well, technically apparently there is Viking Metal, according to Wiki anyway, but to me it doesn't really exist as a subgenre! Like Pirate Metal. All 3 Pirate Metal bands.
Kell, if you like In Flames, check out Killswitch Engage. They kick butt too.
Heck yeah I love Killswitch Engage

I agree. Most of manowar's songs mention valhalla, odin, and such. I think you just have to have vikings as a lyrical theme rather than be from a certain country.

By Odin's beard, the viking metal debate? Let's not go there, that way lies madness and endless quote pyramids.
Whoracle is In Flames best effort. Nice bridge between earlier brutality and later attempts to court the mainstream.

Yeah, they're cool. FINALLY got to see them about a year ago with Lamb of God and Hatebreed when they were in St. Louis. They have a good sound, but kinda blend in with most metal bands nowadays.
I will say that "Chosen Pessimist" is an awesome song. Favorite off that album, actually.

Everything they released from 1996 through 2000 is pretty awesome (The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony, and Clayman). Even though Clayman was the beginning of the transition from melodic death metal to the more "alt-metal" sound they're into these days.
I was really into In Flames after I quickly outgrew my metalcore phase (oh god, so terrible...) and started listening to actual metal. Kalmah (my favorite metal band) and In Flames were pretty a pretty big inspiration to the band I played in after I got out of high school (back when metalcore and screamo where still all the rage).
I highly suggest you check out Kalmah, specifically the albums "Swamplord" (the track "Hades" is my favorite) and "They Will Return" (everything is good).

The only thing enjoyable about this band is the random weirdos that attend their shows. Case in point last time I saw them in Worcester MA there was some edge dude that got naked and stage dove to show off he had tattoo'd a giant X down his arms-back-legs so that when he stood feet apart apart arms in the air he made an X. Naked weirdo's with full body edge tattoos are hilarious because no one stays edge forever.
With that said if your into the band more power to you because different strokes for different folks lol.
Edit:actually I take that back. In flames is ok, not into it but whatever. Im not a fan of radical straight edge people is more to the point.(and I don't drink/do drugs)

I'm with you on that one, but I went from metal, to metalcore, to hardcore, and ended up in punk lol. There are some "metalcore" bands that I love like Black Dahlia Murder and White Chapel, but they're...growing up, and evolving their sound. I actually listened to my As I Lay Dying cd after their singer got arrested and thought "Why did I think this was so rad??"

Funny, my progression was punk, hardcore, metalcore, and metal (though I never stopped listening to punk or hardcore). By the time I left high school I still listened to a lot of metal, but I started to listen to a wider assortment of musical style (that is when I fell in love with bands like Dinosaur Jr., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and Murder By Death).
I agree, there definitely are good metalcore bands: Shai Hulud, Zao, and Converge (I guess you could call them metalcore)

Carcass's Heartwork album is the melo-death blueprint that all others wish they could be. Every metalhead needs to own this album.
edit: here is the title track
