2K Escalation - Necrons w/C'tan vs Tyranids w/Harridan (Completed)  [RSS] Share on facebook Share on Twitter Submit to Reddit

Poll
Will the underdog Tyranids lose to the very powerful Necrons, or can the bugs overcome the Necron Destroyer weapons?
Tyranids pull off the upset by tying up the C'tan with their gribblies.
Draw. Not sure how.
Necron Destroyer weapons are just too devastating. Even Flying Monstrous/Gargantuan Creatures are not a solution.

That seems more like a total mis-play by the Nid player. There is no reason to bring the Harridan in vs the Ctan. He is tarpitted and will be functionally useless for a couple rounds. The only thing he did was suicide himself and the garg unit

I did it because it was my only real chance to kill the C'tan - by a combined effort from 2 units. Many times in Escalation, there are 2 paths to victory - kill your opponent's Titan and have yours survive, or try to kill all your opponent's supporting units. I tried the former. Besides, there's no guarantee that the latter would have improved the chances for a tyranid victory either - judging from the C'tan's offense, I would say that he would have gotten out of that battle in possibly 2 (player) turns of combat if he focused all his attacks and stomps onto the gargoyles. But it would pose an interesting "what if" scenario.

Jy2, on another thought, I am not sure if your C'tan model is legal.

Technically, it needs to use the flying stand which increases it's height slightly. A minor thing, but it can make a difference when playing against a model that powerful.

P.S. - I sent you a PM about my revised Escalation list. I know you are busy, but can you give me feedback on the 2K version?

Sure he's legal. GW didn't supply any base with him so the only requirement is that you base him like a MC. GW might have chosen to mount their C'tan on a flying base to show the "floating" effects, but they don't say that we need to when they didn't include the base into their kits.

Ok, I'll have a look.

You're welcome.

I've got another Escalation game coming up this weekend and it is going to be BIG! Well, not Apoc-big, but big for a normal game of 40K with super-heavies thrown in.

Is this the match that we have already talked about before on Sunday @ 3?

If so, what is the match up going to be?

Also, what do you think will happen to Nids with the upcoming new codex? It seems to me like they could still be very playable, and if the codex is pretty good then there will be a lot more Nids coming off of people's shelves and onto the table top.

Yup, it's the game coming up tomorrow between me and ImotekhTheStormlord.

You're going to see something there that probably many won't even ever see in their 40K career, at least not in person.

Nids will continue to be fun and strong with the new dex. Yeah, you're going to see nid players come back into the spotlight. In particular, you will see the return of my Hive Fleet Pandora. I've actually enjoyed quite a bit of success with the current Tyranid codex. It's just that since taking them to the Bay Area Open earlier this year, I've been preoccupied with some of my other armies ever since (and especially now with Escalation). But they will be making their comeback very soon.

Cool. Are you going to do an Escalation battle report for tomorrows game?

I was on the fence if I wanted to go back into gaming.

You just got me wanting to go in and game again. That was an awesome battle report. Greatly appreciated you taking the time, pics and explaining it in simple terms for this old fart to understand.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Probably. I always enjoy showing off new units that people don't normally see in games of 40K.

Besides, tomorrow's game is an experiment between a balanced Escalation army and an unbalanced one. I have a hypothesis and it is this - bigger is not always better. I think the results may prove interesting to the viewers on dakka.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Apologies if I sounded confrontational - just wanted to make sure you had the details right since it could have been a significant factor in the battle. It seems the small flying base is smaller than i remember.

Definitely looking forward to this upcoming battle... I'm guessing by your description it must be something like a Manta or a Reaver, prehaps a Phantom, although the latter is so expensive it's kind of prohibitve even in a big game. I'm definitely hoping for the Manta... seems like that thing could be pretty nasty with the right support - but much more likely is the Reaver, I'd imagine. assuming you're playing around 2.5k it would make up well over half the force without being so expensive Imhotek would lose everything but in the first couple of turns. Will be extremely interesting for sure! I look forward to reading it.

Currently not in posession of any armies - I merely theorycraft and discuss background,
Waiting for HH Book 6 so I can start an Imperial Army army.

I am in on some of the specifics of the game, as I am attending it too. I'm not to say anything specific, but you're mind is in the right place. I am looking forward to watching, and I am sure that the community that follows jy2's reports will be pleasantly surprised.

No worries. The next battle is a Phantom versus 2 Transcendent C'tans at 3.5K.

Should have charged the ctan with the flyrants. Pretty sure smash would have finished it off leaving you to mop up the rest.

That was definitely 1 option I was considering. However, it is anything but a guaranteed win for the bugs, and I'm talking about that assault only.

Not that it mattered for this report, Jy2, but your Gants couldn't have G2G against that Turn 4 explosion. Synapse makes them Fearless.

Excellent read anyway.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Sometimes, when you are playing both armies, you can get so focused on the overall strategies of both armies that you miss little details like this.
