Just wondering out loud here, but given that synapse is such an issue now, is it time to re-examine some of the previously loathed nids units? Has anyone given any thought to trying out Nid Warriors again?
*sigh*
I'm about to get flamed for this one aren't I? I'm just saying, if the old ways aren't working anymore, maybe it's time to go back to basics? Re-examine old assumptions and the like.

Nice battle report Reecius, thanks for taking the time.
I've always have a lot of fun with my orks. They don't always win, but they've given some very competitive builds some real problems, and they're always a blast to play!

I think that tyranid warriors are viable as a support choice, but I'm iffy about basing an army around them. I can see MSU 3-man units manning the backfied/midfield with 1 ranged gun but that's about it. Without a means of mobility or psychic powers, they really aren't all that great, just serviceable.

IMO, Tyranid FMC's wil get dropped due to VoF more than they will from high strength, low- AP weaponry. I much prefer a venomthrope in a bastion to give them 3+ cover instead. You can even put a unit of biovores on the battlements for 2+ cover.

Yeah while thats true I think the biggest problem will be tau which have the sweetspot ap4 no cover save in spades. Harpies/crones are going to get rocked by things like missilesides/hbc tides/skyrays. You can also kill a venomthrope/bastion, whereas you can't kill a skyshield. Both have merits though (specifically the comms relay wit h the aforementioned biovores controlling it for reserve control). Also the nornprime+venomthrope in a bastion isnt terrible.

Nids stand almost no chance against Tau. That much is going to be the biggest mismatch, ever. That's worse than Nids vs. Venom Spam last edition.
Tau are playing the game on easy mode for sure, but I was hoping Nids would be able to give them a run for their money. This book is such a massive disappointment.
We're finding good combos slowly, but the book literally pisses me off. Sigh, GW is just blowing it these days in a lot of ways. I mean, I still love the game for sure, but wow, this release, like Chaos, shows that the Dev team is so far removed from the players that each book is just a total crap shot. It is really annoying.

Looking at your game reports Reecius, I'm wondering if sinking so many points into the best thing about the codex (Twin Flyrants) is acually a good idea. With the Flyrants so far forward in te early phases of the game, you're leaving yourself very weak in terms of back and mid-field synapse.
I'm giving some serious though to NOT using Flyrants at all, and going with a Tyranid Prime and a few 3 man Warrior units instead. It almost seems like a crazy option. Sacrificing two excellent FMC's for more numerous, more fragile synapse creatures in the mid-and-back field. But it might be worth a try.
Think I'll play a few games with that build on Vassal before I make my final decision on where to splurge my cash. Really feeling the need to round out my collection with a Xenos codex. Was hoping it would be Nids but, ah well, we'll see.

You just said it, didn't you?
This book makes it a partially poor choice to take one of the best units! Haha, it makes you want to take the shitastic Prime, who is grossly overcosted.
Warriors are so, so bad. So bad. So bad it hurts and every time I see people saying they're good I cry on the inside. If only they had EW, or T5, then MAYBE they would be worth their cost. But they are slow, weak, easy to kill, expensive, and just all around crummy.
In a sPod they can be a decent disruption unit but they die in droves to damn near anything.
Perhaps in casual play, but if you see Tau or Eldar, you are dead meat. They ignore your armor and cover and often, your FnP.
Shirkes are even squishier.
If they were 10pts cheaper per model, maybe. I hate to sound so down on them, maybe min/max units will emerge with some good biomorph combos, but as a combat unit? No way.
Anyway, I am bring overly negative again. The book will yield some good lists, I am sure, but they will be at the weakest end of the power scale.

I really thought people were just being Debbie Downers when the codex came out and everybody said it was crap. I didn't believe it and thought broken netlists would emerge very quickly.
Alas, all that complaining was actually deserved.
For an army that is supposed to fight as a unified force under the hive mind, they really did a crappy job expressing that on the tabletop as any more than a crutch.
I am primarily a CSM player, and I have to say misery does not love its company. I feel bad that Nids got a horrible dex as well, that seems like it might actually be worse than CSM...

@Reecius: *hangs head in shame* Yup I said it. I'm almost ashamed of it but the Nid book really does seem determined to force us into picking mediocre choices, just to get the dex to actually function.
Now we know why the byline went to the Citadel Design Team. I doubt anyone at GW would want to take ownership for this abomination of a book.
@Herpguy Without a doubt, the best thing about the Nid codex (so far) is that it makes me feel a lot better about the CSM codex. I'm really hoping it turns out to be a repeat of the negativity that surrounded the Tau release, but I'm already beginning to doubt it. If J2y or Reecius can show me it's possible to field Nids competitively, I'll put the cash down. If they can't, I'll have to shelve my Nids plans for yet another edition.
I really, really want to collect Nids, but I already have a number of curently low-tier codices that I wheel out for casual games. I'm not sure I can justify the expense of adding another when I've yet to field a top-tier codex at a tournament in 6th. I really, really don't want to play Eldar or Tau, but I'm beginning to feel as though I'm going to be forced into it if I want to place well at anything other than local tournaments. Likewise, I don't want to invest in Dark Eldar or Orks (my very favorite Xenos) until after their new books make an appearance. And I really do want a Xenos force to round out my Imperial and Chaos forces before I emigrate.
I just hope they do a better job with the Guard codex. Seriously, Guard are my babies. If they muck that one up as badly as this one I'll be crying into my Hi-Tack.

So nice to see Orks win a solid victory. Few ork players at my FLGS and its painful to see them lose time after time. Might just be them, though. herpguy wrote: I firmly believe carnifex spam will be the "competitive" tyranid build that will emerge. When I first read the Nid Codex, I thought this same exact thing. Not sure if Regeneration on 9 of them will be the way to go, but surely throw Venomthropes near them to provide cover as they advance. When they go down, the horde army will be close enough for charge.

Told ya:
http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2013/10/40k-rumors-tyranid-supplements.html
GW plans strategically. They plan for making money with our plastic addiction! As soon as I heard the river of tears being shed by the nid folks, I knew this would happen. You fools... they are soooooo smart! It's like playing chess vs Kasparov. Hate it when I'm right. Called it on the first game on the frontline website too. Damn you GW! They're going to use the digital dataslates to keep more money flowing to the corporation and not allow FLGS to wet their beaks. Digital Release = much much more profit. Just like direct sales of essential pieces.
I don't want to buy the digital edition of the orks dataslates. It makes me sad. How do folks without computers or ipads get to do this? Sorry off topic... random rant.

Cool batrep again! I'm really enjoying the nids challenge series thing you've got going on.
Question about the challenge though. You said the challenger can make you play any army, correct? So they most likely make you play what they might consider the weakest. If nids are so bad, could they make you play with nids for the challenge? lol Anyways looking forward to the next match up

Well, Reece is limited by the models. I think you have to look at it more as, play any army that they have in the store. Bugs vs bugs is not viable because bugs will both win and lose. It doesn't really prove anything, except who is the better bug player.
