Poll
Do the Grey Knights have any chance at all against the might of Necrons and Tau?
Yes, the Force is with the Knights. Plus, they've got Eldar allies.
Draw. As the Grey Knight player, I'll take this!
The knights have no way to take down the flying croissants and no answer to Mindshackles. NecTau will dominate.

Good report as usual, thanks

Why did he concede ??? he was able to crush all your troops and support with its wraiths !!??

Agreed.

Though I had a strategy for that (if he played too aggressively) as well.

I enjoyed it man. These two armies I know very little about (Knights and Crons) so its good to learn some things.

Not to toot my own horns, but you will probably learn a lot about the armies that I play and play against from my reports. I usually try to add as much detail as I can remember in my reports. I try to make my reports as informative as possible.

jathomas2013 wrote:

Well, unfortunately it has happened again! I swear, about a quarter of your battles the opponents concede because he runs out of troops!

That's because I usually know what I should target in my opponent's armies.

After losing almost all of his troops (besides the R'varna), he felt that the odds were just against him, especially against a player of my calibre. So rather than grind it out to its natural conclusion (which we were both pretty sure what it would be), he conceded so that he could get another game in (against someone else).

He hasn't played his necrons since, well, since we last played in 2012 at the Golden Throne. Since then, he's been playing mainly Tau and Taudar. So he's pretty rusty with his crons, even for a casual player I suppose.

This one was definitively one of those games that I look back and want to reverse just about everything I did. Bottom line was that I was not familiar enough with his list's capabilities to know or remember what all their special abilities were - definitely cost me the match.

I deployed tightly due to the deep striking capabilities of his units. I didn't assault when I should have because Jim kept warning me in an ominous tone that he was going to double out the wraiths with his STR 10 flamers.

Some things I'll take away from the match -
Learned that Warp spiders are great anti-air units and are the most mobile/agile little buggers I've ever seen
Keep my troops aboard the scythes until turn 5 (if possible)
Focus more on the storm raven
Kill the melta fisted autarch in big guns
Play my own game and always remember to damn the torpedos with my wraiths

Thanks for the game Trent.

You probably misunderstood me here. I said that all my MC's were S10. I didn't say that their flamers were S10, though I did say that those flamers were torrents.

I definitely misunderstood then, as who in their right mind would charge into STR 10 auto-hit flamer templates? That's exactly why I didn't go after the Dreadknights at all and tried to shoot them to death, thought they were wielding the very flames of HELL.

Lol. It would be pretty nasty if dreadknights came with S10 torrent flamers. I think everyone would be running them if that was the case.

Guess you learn something new every day.

I'm a bit confused with the velocity locked Night Scythe. Did it move exactly 18" before it was locked? Even playing it without turns if it moved between 18" and 36" it would be locked at 36" per the Rulebook FAQ.

Yeah, he only moved 18".

The BRB FAQ is a little unclear. It just says that if you are locked at cruising/combat speed, then you continue moving at cruising/combat speed. It doesn't specify if you have to move exactly how far you moved last turn or whether you have to move the full 36" or anywhere in between.

BRB FAQ 1.5:

Q: If a Flyer suffers Locked Velocity and was moving at
Cruising Speed (18"-36"), what speed is its velocity actually
locked at? (p81)
A: 36".

It's pretty clear though. I do recall it changing during the various FAQs.

Thanks for this cut n paste. Would have probably saved my Night Scythe for sure as it auto-died due to Jim's Autarch placement...bah! Still, the Str 10 flamers were a worse problem for me.

Good match Jim. As an aside, aren't you obliged to bring flyers on from reserve in zoom mode, or am I going slightly mad?

You can come on in Hover mode. You just have to announce it prior to bringing it on.

Great report again Jim! I thought you had a pretty rough start losing that Dreadknight so soon but you bounced back and took it cleanly.

Nice game and good focus not getting distracted by the wraiths.

Is the R'Varna squatting? He seems really low from what I remember of the model.

A lot of the early Monster Mash lists ( yours is quite a unique variant) had an Avatar as an HQ. Did you ever test this?

I haven't checked the FAQ's recently. That helps to clarify a lot. Thanks!

My opponent took pity on me.

Nope, that's just how he is. Basically, his bottom half is almost exactly the same as a normal riptide, I believe. They're semi-squatting.

Methinks the pilot has had 1 drink too many and can't wait for the battle to be over so he can go do his thing.

No, the Avatar is a little too slow for my army. Otherwise, I'd take him in heartbeat. The lists emphasizes the big guys. More importantly, it needs speed. The Laughtarch has speed up the wazoo and is quite dangerous to the enemy backfield units. Draigo can deepstrike or stay in the raven for his mobility. More importantly, he is needed for Psychic Communion to control my reserves and also to give me cheap but durable scoring units.

If Draigo is in reserve he cannot use his psychic communion. So he needs to be on the table. He can be picked up by the SR though.

Yup, which was exactly what I did in this game. I just like that he has the flexibility to start off on the table and be able to manipulate reserves or to start off in Reserves if he has to and yet still have mobility when he comes on in.

The other issue is the Avatar now how battle focus - he is a lot faster than he used to be ... still I see the autarch being a force.
