Kill Team is exactly the kind of half-@#$ed attempt to do this.

Also, while it's nice that people are rules-bashing together their own skirmish versions, nothing is as effective as an official version.

Even at my store they've tentatively started playing low point value games and it's just not as fun sometimes. You can't get some of the really fun stuff as it's either too many points, or just balanced for a larger game.

It's called, not needing a temporary league format just to play a decent game at small point values with the fun toys.

So amend "Kill Team is dead" to "Kill Team is dead as City Fight or Storm of Magic (Because No One Plays That)"?

Dead because players choose to not play it is not the same thing as dead because GW killed it though.

The Inquisimunda and Kill Team homebrew people have put more work into their unofficial products than the Black Library is likely to put into an e-book supplement.

It's an ePub digital release available through the Black Library. They didn't write it, they're just serving as a means of distribution. Likewise there is the ePub version as well as an iBooks version in iTunes.

GW has been releasing a lot of stuff as digital only in the last 4-5 months with only some of it getting released as books at launch of the title or later down the line (codexes and codex supplements namely, everything else is fairly up in the air).

It is too late. Unless they made something revolutionary, there is too much better competition on the market in that space.

Plus, GW would be afraid that it would cannablize from the sales for their larger games.

If GW was really a models-with-rules company, they shouldn't care what game the models are used with.
So, release a main game (40k), a bigger version (Escalation/Apoc) and a smaller version (Kill team/?).
People with the one game would but models for that, and branch out to pad out the others. Am army used in 40k won't necessarily have all the models needed to play in Kill Team, so more models gets sold.

But all that's already been said.
GW need to sort out the rules they sell, or let someone else have a go. Get on with selling models, if that's what GW wants to be good at.

Part of the problem is the sales part of GW acts like a different company when compared to the rest of GW. It's a real issue that needs to be fixed because it's hurting their stores.

Skirmish games are IMO so much more enjoyable. Imagine a game where your individual troopers matter? Not just Space Marines and the like, but whether your hardy Guardsmen can make it past the enemy to plant that grenade that you have marked in his inventory.

And that's why everybody needs to play Chaos Gate for PC.

Or a miniature table top game where they do matter and thing like that do happen..... "cough" Infinity "cough".

They have a Skirmish level it is called Kill Team and it has rules for it. Next step up if you don't do the Mega Battles at your local GW is 500 points which you can get close to six games in a day at tournament level.

I really don't think kill team should be counted. While it technically is a skirmish game the rules are no different from 40k but with individuals instead of squads. The rules there are not built for a skirmish game at all, they are just sort of ham fists into one.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Skirmish games don't sell mini's (for GW) that is why they killed all the older skirmish games, next 40k edition will be all apocalypse style, more bigger mini's!

So in the next edition, somebody will write in the fluff that the mechanicus are able to assemble super heavy regiments again?

Space Marines, Orks, Imperial Guard, Chaos, Tau, Necrons, Germans (LW), Protectorate of Menoth

With the way GW is going I'd expect a dataslate saying as much and a 1 click collection trying to sell you 10 baneblades at a 1% mark up for the convenience of only clicking once before the end of the year.

As an older player I have an idea that 40k games used to be smaller than the games today. It appears that point creep and new models are taking games to a grander scale. These games have less appeal to me due to the increased investment, greater time between turns, and increase game time. Do you think GW will come out with a smaller game format similar to killzone or dare i say necromunda? Or does the idea of a smaller game format have potential to siphon sales away from the main game, leading to less models sold.

What do you think dakka?

Apparently years ago when the decision was made by GW to concentrate on the core games, all of the specialist games were going to be removed from the site (miniatures, rules, any mention of them again - everything). Jervis Johnson then stepped in and offered to help take care of all of that side of things with regards to concentrating and summarising the resources together, on top of his existing responsibilities with the company. This was completely off his own back, and I also heard 'unpaid' (although with this kind of job I don't think you are ever really paid and the lines between hobby and paid work are blurred).

So, no matter what you think of JJ, how scornful you are of his articles he (used to) write in WD, that old DA codex or whatever, we should be sincerely thankful to him that he made this effort, and that those games were still visible even though they were on life-support - those games are IMO some of the best rulesets the company has ever been involved with and it's no surprise that they are still thought so fondly of, and still have a wide range of players.

As a side note, I have read elsewhere on Dakka that these rules systems (as well as the specialist range itself) are going to be completely removed from the new GW website. So, if you're not a member of the other fan communities that have these resources for download, you should probably get them now while you have the chance!

To the OP - at present, I don't think so. The entire foundation for the current MO of GW is that you need to collect a big army for big bucks, there shouldn't be an alternative system (with forces collectable for less than £50) competition for your hobby time and money. Don't get me wrong, I would love GW to go back to actually acting like its namesake again - a games (rather than game, singular) workshop, as they were in the 90s, but with the current culture at the company it would no doubt be overly expensive, with an unweildy ruleset that feels like it has been murdered by committee (which I thought was the case with Dreadfleet).

Also, I'm not even sure there is a need for it - there are some awesome skirmish-level rulesets out there already; Infinity, Mercs, Deadzone, Tomorrow's War etc that can easily be adapted to 40k miniatures (many people have already done so), and also provide a much more fulfilling gaming experience than killteam.
